Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
I was a staff writer at my college newspaper writing about video games.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
The latest gaming equipment, as well as a speech-to-text program to dictate my work.
Why did you become a journalist?
I became a journalist to originally write about the gaming industry. However, after publishing a story in my college newspaper about accessibility, I wanted to shift my focus to cover accessibility and the disabled community. Those two aspects are often unrepresented amongst mainstream publications.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
My first story for the Washington Post regarding how Accessibility Consultants are working to create inclusive products for disabled players. I was able to highlight not only an unknown aspect of the industry, but also highlights the disabled community in the gaming space.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Be sure to continuously network with other journalists. Share their work, offer pitching ideas, and build a community of other journalists to are willing to help you succeed.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
With friends!
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
Launcher.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
I only write about accessibility in the gaming industry. I do not discuss other aspects of tech, nor am I well-versed enough to properly write about them.
