Silent Struggles: How AI Is Fueling a Hidden Workforce Crisis
77,000 tech jobs gone in six months. Attrition at a 30-year low. This is the AI workforce disruption nobody's talking about — and what to do about it. Nobody is filing WARN Act notices. Nobody is holding press conferences. The jobs are just disappearing — quietly, one unfilled departure at a time. The tech unemployment rate hit 4.6% in early 2026, the highest in four years, but that number barely tells the story. The real disruption is invisible, and most enterprise leaders are missing it entirely.
18F: Digital service delivery

Prototype early, prototype often: A lesson from the DATA Act
A lot of people ask us how our projects save money. It’s a tricky question to answer because often, the benefits of improved digital services are efficiencies for federal employees, more flexible decision making, and a greater ability to achieve your mission. Each of these benefits are difficult to quantify, but can have a positive impact on government. Our work with the Digital Accountability and Transparency Act (DATA Act) is a good example.
A visit to the National Earthquake Information Center’s open source team
The view from the National Earthquake Information Center’s office on the Colorado School of Mines campus in Golden, CO. On January 28, 2016 people living at the Jersey Shore felt a shake. New Jersey, like most Mid-Atlantic states, has a relatively low probability of earthquakes, especially compared to a place like California.
18F year two: By the numbers
18F turns two years on Saturday, and we thought we’d take the opportunity to reflect on how our organization has grown and progressed in the last 12 months. Our team, our work, and even this blog have grown and diversified since March 19, 2015. Here are a few key statistics to show how: 18F is funded out of the acquisition services fund and we sign agreements with partner agencies to recover our costs.
What’s in the first U.S. Extractives Industries Transparency Initiative report
Just a few months ago, we wrote about the next phase of the United States Extractives Industry Transparency Initiative (USEITI), one of our oldest projects with the lofty goal of educating and informing public debate around natural resources produced on public land. This week, the U.S. Department of the Interior released the first report from the United States, a major step toward becoming fully compliant with the global EITI standard.
Study Shows Millennials Are Losing Confidence In Government
It’s of no surprise that with a new study, the statistics show that the Millennial generation has lost confidence and trust in government. It’s due to several factors but the one thing that is prominent in their assessment is due to the massive amount of historical data available to this new generation that prior generations had no access to. Today’s youth have the entire gambit of human history at their fingertips via a smartphone and the internet.

UX Lessons Learned From A Procurement Project
by Greg Boone and Elaine Kamlley and Melody Kramer UX designer Nick Brethauer has spent the past few months working on Discovery, a website that makes the procurement process a lot easier for GSA’s contracting officers — the people who are responsible for buying products and services for the federal government. Discovery lets these contracting officers find and sort vendors based on their experience levels and other attributes.
Making Procurement Easier: Some Questions For Developer Kaitlin Devine
by Greg Boone and Elaine Kamlley and Melody Kramer We recently sat down with developer Kaitlin Devine and asked her a few questions about 18F and government procurement. Not familiar with the term procurement? It basically means buying stuff. A self-described “procurement nerd,” Kaitlin has been working on a project to make the procurement process a lot more efficient within GSA. It’s called Discovery and launched in March 2015. What do you do at 18F and why did you want to work here?
How to use GitHub and the terminal: a guide
We’ve written before how everything we do is open from day one. One of the ways we do that is by building all of our products—from our blog and our dashboard to a new website for the Peace Corps’ Let Girls Learn Initiative—using GitHub. We do this so that the public can see the code we’re working on, offer feedback, and copy or fork that code for their own projects.
Taking control of our website with Jekyll and webhooks
A few of us here recently took a bit of time to drastically rework 18F's main website and blog — what you're reading right now — and take it fully into our own hands. It may not look a lot different on the surface, but we made some serious infrastructure changes. Namely, we migrated the site to Jekyll, and left Tumblr behind by moving the blog inside to join it. We also set up automatic deployment to staging and live sites, using GitHub's webhook system.
