1 “It’s completely up to you, whether you want to go ahead with this,” Vince’s father said, looking almost as uncomfortable as Vince in the sound-deadening, white-carpeted waiting room. “Maybe it would help you with your schoolwork and open up more choices in the long run. But it’s your choice what you do right now.” “Did I do badly on the test?” Vince asked.

Morphotrophic - Greg Egan
As soon as Marla opened her eyes and saw the patch of sunlight on the wall of her bedroom, she knew that something was amiss. The light from the east-facing window above her bed had fallen in more or less the same place the morning before – low on the wall, stretching partway across the floor – so if she’d woken at the usual time again, there was nothing about its location that should have surprised her.

Analog, July/August 2023. Look! Charlottes father commanded her, gesturing up at the sky with a sweep of his hand that encompassed every speck of light above them. Hed dragged her out of bed and driven for more than an hour, finally stopping beside an empty plot of land far from the centre of the city. She could see the Milky Way stretching from horizon to horizon, and at any other time she might have marvelled at the sight. But she still didnt understand why theyd come here.
Greg Egan: This rubber-stamped St. Paul school budget makes a big mistake
Just after 9 p.m. last Tuesday night, the Saint Paul School Board voted on a $1,020,835,728 budget it saw for the first time two business days before. School administrators expected and received a rubber stamp from the School Board. JJ Hill Montessori Elementary School will now lose a beloved Pre-k/kindergarten teacher, the only Black teacher at the school. All of this is happening while the school board purports to champion racial equity, increase transparency and retain teachers of color.
Scale - Greg Egan
As the phone started ringing, the leftmost indicator bulb in the row of seven lit up, blinking in time with the jangle of the buzzer but bright enough to shine clearly through the red gel and a patina of dust. Sam hesitated, doubting his own eyes for a moment, then tempted to assume a wrong number and spare both parties the nuisance of a protracted conversation. But he couldn’t let the call ring out.

1 “Any pets?” Justine asked, glancing up from the checklist on her phone. “No,” James replied, hopeful that this might count in his favor, though it was hard to read his interrogator’s demeanor. She’d said she was a law student, and he could already imagine her in a courtroom, calmly trapping duplicitous witnesses in the web of their own lies.
Science Fiction and Philosophy
Before we get into the five books you have chosen, might you tell us: what’s your special interest in science fiction, and how does it tie in with philosophy? Well, partly, I just love it. There’s something to be said for pursuing what you love. But I also think science fiction is a great fit for philosophy in a couple of ways. Speculative fiction, generally, I think of as fiction that explores scenarios beyond the ordinary run of human experience.

1 “More caviar?” Daniel Cliff gestured at the serving dish and the cover irised from opaque to transparent. “It’s fresh, I promise you. My chef had it flown in from Iran this morning.” “No thank you.” Julie Dehghani touched a napkin to her lips then laid it on her plate with a gesture of finality.
The Book of All Skies
The front cover of the volume sitting before her was a piece of hardboard, cleaved by three deep fractures, crisscrossed by a dozen shallower cuts and crumbling at the corners, but otherwise more or less intact. The title was carved in grooves and pits that would have been dyed for the sake of contrast, but were always meant to be as amenable to reading by touch as by sight.

1 The last thing Rufus could recall his brother Linus doing was swimming laps, in the aquatic center twenty minutes’ walk from his apartment in West Ryde. Rufus hadn’t been near a pool in years, but he booked a lane, went to the center and climbed, shivering, down into the water. He floundered at first, thrashing about, getting the acrid, chlorinated water up his nose. Then Linus’s memories took over, and Rufus found himself gliding along, if not effortlessly, at least competently.

Greg Egan: Minnesota needs to change its ‘felony-murder’ doctrine. Racial inequities are one reason
While the charging of former Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin for the death of George Floyd under the felony-murder doctrine has been applauded by many, it has also drawn criticism. Unfortunately, when it comes to disenfranchised men of color, prosecutors have used this charging mechanism for decades without scrutiny or hesitation.
The Best Books on Philosophical Wonder
Before we discuss your books, let’s start with the topic, philosophical wonder. What do you mean by that? I was just wondering what I meant by that this morning. I don’t have an analytical philosopher’s definition of ‘wonder’ yet. Here’s what I have so far: We go through life with all kinds of presuppositions, which are usually implicit, about how things are and how they must be. Philosophical wonder occurs when we’re jostled out of that and we start to see new, interesting possibilities.
The Best of Greg Egan
Dust jacket illustration by David Ho. Greg Egan is arguably Australia’s greatest living science fiction writer. In a career spanning more than thirty years, he has produced a steady stream of novels and stories that address a wide range of scientific and philosophical concerns: artificial intelligence, higher mathematics, science vs religion, the nature of consciousness, and the impact of technology on the human personality.

The Best of Greg Egan
Review by Diane H, Reviewer Last updated on 29 Oct 2019 My Recommendation An interesting collection of twenty hard science-fiction tales selected by the author is located in the Best of Greg Egan. The longish stories deal with what it means to be human and how technology is going to change both us and our outside environment. They were originally created between 1990 and 2019. Five of them are collected here for the first time. All of them use some intense ideas, science and especially math.
Zeitgeber
For millions of years, life on Earth has taken its cues from the rising and setting of the sun, and for most of human history we’ve followed the same rhythm. But if that shared connection was broken, and we each fell under the sway of our own private clock, could we still hold our lives together? One family is about to find out. 1 “Daddy?” Emma pleaded.
Perihelion Summer
Reviewed by Robert Goodman. By Greg Egan, Pan Macmillan, $21.99. Australian science fiction author Greg Egan is known for exploring mind blowing concepts in his science fiction. In Perihelion Summer he comes closer to home with a climate change-style global disaster story set mainly off the western coast of Australia. The world waits as a tiny black hole named Taraxippus enters the solar system. Out at sea, Matt and a few friends have built a floating, self sustaining fish farm.
Mission Critical
New anthology from the critically-acclaimed editor of Engineering Infinity. HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM… Life is fragile. The difference between success and failure can come down to nothing – the thread of a screw, the flick of a switch – and when it goes wrong, you fix it. Or someone dies. Mission Critical takes us from our world, across the Solar System, and out into deep space to tell the stories of people who had to do the impossible. And do it fast. Featuring stories by Peter F.
Current Issue - Asimov’s Science Fiction
January/February 2024 We have two blockbuster novellas crammed into our January/February 2024 issue! Sean McMullen treats us to a very cold story that occurs “After...
PERIHELION SUMMER
Near-future catastrophe devastates the Southern Hemisphere: another entry from Egan (Phoresis, 2018, etc.) that's more than a novella yet less than a novel. A small black hole, Taraxippus (taraxippoi were horse-frightening demons believed to haunt racetracks throughout ancient Greece), enters the solar system.
Perihelion Summer by Greg Egan | Tor.com Publishing
Greg Egan's Perihelion Summer is a story of people struggling to adapt to a suddenly alien environment, and the friendships and alliances they forge as they try to find their way in a world where the old maps have lost their meaning. Taraxippus is coming: a black hole one tenth the mass of the sun is about to enter the solar system. Matt and his friends are taking no chances.

The Nearest
When a detective, a new mother, is assigned to the case of a horrific triple murder, it appears to be a self-contained domestic tragedy, a terrible event but something that doesn’t affect the rest of the community. But it slowly becomes clear that something much darker may be at play, something that spreads out from the scene of the crime to corrode the closest relationships of everyone it touches.
Subterranean Press Phoresis eBook
Welcome to Tvibura and Tviburi, the richly imagined twin planets that stand at the center of Greg Egan’s extraordinary new novella, Phoresis. These two planets—one inhabited, one not—exist in extreme proximity to one another. As the narrative begins, Tvibura, the inhabited planet, faces a grave and imminent threat: the food supply is dwindling, and the conditions necessary for sustaining life are growing more and more erratic.
Permutation City
A Novel 352 Pages ISBN: 9781597805391 Imprint: Night Shade Books Trim Size: 6in x 9in x 0in “Egan is determined to make sense of everything – to understand the whole world as an intelligible, rational, material (and finally manipulable) realm – even if it means abandoning comfortable and comforting illusions. This is fundamental to the whole project of SF and it’s why Egan’s Best – and his Rest – is worth any number of looks.
PHORESIS by Greg Egan
Dazzling new novella from an author (Dichronauts, 2017, etc.) who specializes in inventing seriously weird worlds and making them real. Or sometimes not quite. Last time out, Egan offered us a mathematically plausible, inhabited—place?—whose hyperbolic geometry was, regrettably, difficult verging on impossible to visualize. Here, he summons up a pair of planetoids that orbit each other in a single day. One, Tvíbura, is inhabited but slowly dying; Tvíburi may be habitable.
Symmetric Waves - Greg Egan
In a comment to a blog post I wrote about spherical harmonics, Gerard Westendorp asked an interesting question: Can an atom have dodecahedral symmetry? My first hunch about this was that the answer would be: only in the sense that you can give an atom’s wave function any shape at all.

Fables for the Modern Age: Osama Alomar’s The Teeth of the Comb and Other Stories
As a writer, fables have always eluded me. I am not a pious person, but when I try to write a fable, I try so hard to make it meaningful that it comes out pious, pretentious, overwrought. Osama Alomar does not have that problem. His book, The Teeth of the Comb and Other Stories, is a delicate, sometimes hilarious, and often starkly heartbreaking collection of modern fables.
Listen to Steal the Stars Episode 2: “Three Dogs”
Steal the Stars is the story of Dakota Prentiss and Matt Salem, two government employees guarding the biggest secret in the world: a crashed UFO. Despite being forbidden to fraternize, Dak and Matt fall in love and decide to escape to a better life on the wings of an incredibly dangerous plan: they’re going to steal the alien body they’ve been guarding and sell the secret of its existence.
The Great Stephen King Reread: Duma Key
You can’t write as many books as Stephen King without returning to the same well from time to time. Whether it’s evil cars (Christine, 1983; From a Buick 8, 2002), life after death (Pet Sematary, 1983; Revival, 2014), an image of a rat in someone’s mouth cut from ‘Salem’s Lot showing up 36 years later in a story from Full Dark, No Stars (“1923”), or an abandoned manuscript from 1981 (The Cannibals) getting repurposed as Under the Dome in 2009, King believes in recycling.
Uncanny Valley
Immortality, but at what price, in what form, and how could you be you? In the near future it’s possible to build a new you, a better you, one that could carry on forever. But if you could carry on, if you could make choices about who you would be forever, how much of your past would you bring with you? Would you be tempted to maybe…edit? Adam isn’t all that he used to be, but he wants to be.
Olson a great choice
To the editor: Jeanne Olson is the only independent running to represent House District 3 and also the only one not taking corporate or political PAC money. She’s only accepting donations from individuals (the Bernie Sanders method). This makes her better able to work with all sides when she gets to Juneau. I’ve listened to Jeanne on Problem Corner this past week and was impressed by her answers.
Upload your mind and live forever
Hopes&Fears: Why are you interested in mind uploading? Pete Mandik: There are some people who think that there is a way of surviving death by having your conscious experience emulated or replicated by a computer program. One way of thinking of how this would work is that we would scan your brain while you are still alive and take a really highly detailed 3D snapshot of all the structures and activity in the brain down to something like the molecular level.
No Intelligence Required
Why is almost every contemporary science fiction movie irredeemably stupid? When it comes to tent-pole blockbusters full of super-heroes or warp drives, this is no great mystery: with hundreds of millions of dollars at stake, the well-tried formula of ninety percent CGI-action eye-candy and ten percent Hollywood-grade relationships-and-morality dross is exactly what you’d expect investors to demand. But even auteur-driven works with modest budgets are often no better.
Google, the Stupidity Amplifier
Subject: Please tell Google this photo isn’t me Hi I apologise for this unpersonalised email, but I’m sending this message to a large number of people in the hope that you can spare a few seconds next time you’re on the internet to help me correct a small but very annoying problem. I’ve just discovered that if you type “Greg Egan” into a Google search, the results page itself includes a little potted biography of me on the right-hand side of the page, taken from various sources.
