RV Mods: Protect your headlights!
By Greg Illes As we prepared for our Alaska trip, we read many warnings about damage caused by flying rocks. Having traveled thousands of miles of dirt roads in the Desert Southwest, we are no strangers to road hazards. "To sleep, perchance to dream ..." — but not behind the wheel
By Greg Illes (with apologies to Billy Shakespeare)Healthy sleep is one of the most talked-about subjects in many walks of medicine, and with good reason. Good sleep makes for a good life. Sleep – really solid, deep sleep – is the time when the body and mind heal up from the day’s rigors. Sleep time is about the only time in our lives when we are truly masters of our souls. But for some, good sleep can be elusive. If you have a sleep disorder, you are probably already dealing with it.
Use self-fusing silicone tape for weatherproof connections
By Greg Illes Standard vinyl electrical tape has been around for a long time – too long, some would say. The problem with this commonly used product is its adhesive. It doesn’t really stick very well and after awhile it starts to peel loose, leaving a gooey mess behind. But there’s a self-fusing silicone rubber tape for weatherproof connections which works great.

Taking care of RV batteries, high-tech style
By Greg Illes Sometimes batteries seem ridiculously simple—we tend to see them as either working or dead. But there is way more than meets the eye in this 2,000-year-old technology. RV batteries are made with lead plates interleaved with lead-dioxide plates. The plates are immersed in sulfuric acid, and the electrochemical reaction creates the battery effect. The whole bundle is wrapped up in a big plastic box with the electrical terminals on top.

RV mods: Screen your engine for protection
By Greg Illes We were happily driving along the highway, enjoying the passing scenery, when suddenly a small flock of sparrows crossed our path, darting frantically about in front of our Class A before escaping. Alas, one of the tiny birds was not as adept an aviator as his fellows and I heard/felt a small “thwack.” So we pulled over to investigate the front of the RV, including the engine grill. We were both glad that we stopped.

Full-time RVing-Don't you get lonely?
One of the most-asked questions from my non-RV friends is, “Isn’t it awful lonely traveling full-time in a motorhome?” It’s a somewhat ingenuous query that always makes me smile, but I try to answer seriously, in a way that the novice can understand as a takeaway from our conversation. Fact is, my wife and I meet more people, and we meet more-interesting people, and we have more time to spend with them, than when we are at home.

Be kind to your differential – It's all you have - RV Travel
By Greg Illes Deep down under your rig, far behind the driver’s seat and usually caked with dirt, grease and road grime, is one of the most critical members of your drive train – the rear axle and its differential. From Wikimedia Whether you drive a motorhome or pull a trailer or fifth wheel, you and your entire load rely on that rear axle to propel you down the road.
