Poll: Should people be fined for failing to self-isolate? ENGLAND HAS INTRODUCED new rules that could see people receive fines of up to £10,000 if they fail to self-isolate. This means that anyone who has tested positive or has been a close contact of a Covid-19 case and fails to quarantine could receive a hefty penalty. There have been some calls for a similar system here too, to prevent the spread of the virus and to stop any flouting of rules.
Poll: Do you plan to get the flu vaccine this upcoming winter?
ANY SIGNIFICANT LEVEL of flu in the community could lead to the Covid-19 test and trace system being overwhelmed as people present with similar symptoms, health experts say. Chief Clinical Officer Dr Colm Henry told TheJournal.ie that because flu and Covid-19 both seriously impact on vulnerable and older groups, health officials want to “avoid a twin attack on the same populations” in Ireland.
Letter from China: Life is back to normal after Covid-19, but under strict conditions
HELLO AGAIN FROM China. I thought I’d give you an update as the word was spreading that China was back to normal, and I can confirm that that’s pretty much the case. I work in a place called Weihai teaching for a British university, Lancaster, and am now in my second week back in the classroom after eight months out. I live five minutes off-campus, and when I ride through the gates each morning my temperature is scanned and once it’s ok, life inside is pretty much as it was last year.

Greg McDonough, a Kerryman living in China, has been detailing the experience he, his wife and son have had in lockdown since Covid-19 emerged. This week, many of the social restrictions in China were lifted. Here, Greg offers some insight into what it’s been like and how he sees things playing out from here: I HAVE JUST received a text from a western restaurant in Shanghai to say they are reopening. This week I went to a mall for the first time in ten weeks.

Poll: What is your favourite board game? THERE’S PLENTY OF time to kill at home these days. Some people are trying to learn a language, and others are catching up on their reading. But if Christmas has taught us anything, it’s that you can’t beat a good board game to pass the time and prove that you’re cleverer/luckier/more cutthroat than your close family and friends. Some are more enjoyable than others, but today we’re wondering: Which board game is your favourite?

Opinion: We survived lockdown in China, you too can get through this Covid-19 crisis
HELLO AGAIN FROM a chirpier China, where things have levelled off considerably. I have been asked to write this new piece for TheJournal.ie, but this time the focus is different, it’s about you, at home in Ireland. You won’t be reading my account from China and thinking it sounds like an alien situation. This time around, you know what it’s like. Hopefully, though, I can share some tips here on how to get through a Covid-19 crisis, which sadly, desperately, Ireland is now in the midst of.

Poll: Who should TDs elect as taoiseach today? THE 33RD DÁIL will meet today and the main item of business – aside from the election of the Ceann Comhairle – will be for TDs to vote on who should be taoiseach. The new Ceann Comhairle will usually ask a member of the largest party in the House to nominate their party leader for the position of Taoiseach. But it doesn’t look likely that any potential candidate for taoiseach will be able to muster the support of the Dáil this afternoon.

Opinion: Yes, we're still on coronavirus lockdown in China, weeks later
HELLO AGAIN FROM the dark side of the planet, where things are degenerating at a reasonably alarming rate. When asked to write a piece at the beginning of this month, I was still happy-go-lucky, my attitude more ‘’sure ’tis all a crazy experience” than “help me, this is a nightmare”. But, two weeks of effective isolation can change everything.
Opinion: One minute it's a family holiday, the next we're housebound in China - one Irishman's coronavirus story
HELLO FROM THE Twilight Zone. I am an Irishman stuck in China at the moment and was asked to write this piece, and, sure, it’s not like I have much else on. Two weeks ago myself, my wife Wang Xuan and our son Joseph were sunning it up on the tropical island of Sanya, off the south China coast. We returned to our home in Hefei, a city in Anhui Province for a few days before heading to her parents’ home in a small town nearby for ‘a few days’ for the annual Spring Festival.

Students Create a Pop-Up Makerspace at a Domestic Violence Shelter - EdSurge News
This story is part of an EdSurge Research series about how educators are changing their practices to reach all learners. We pulled up to a building, which looked like a storefront from the outside. As we entered, anxiety set in—at least for me. The inside had a factory aesthetic, with old furniture strewn about and folding tables arranged in the center of the room.
