Sires With Winners - Monday June 29
Here is the full list of 27 stallions which had winners throughout Australasia today with winners and result details.
John Fung - Up and Runn(er)ing
Not too many hit a bullseye when they first pick up a dart, but John Fung won’t ever forget his initial foray into the world of yearling sales. Attending the September sale at Keeneland (where, I kid you not, there are over 4,000 yearlings on offer), a Gun Runner filly caught his eye. Actually, a few of the Gun Runners did.
Magic Millions - The Book
The famous US sports journo, Red Smith, once proclaimed that : “writing is easy … I just sit down at my typewriter and open a vein”. To be honest, I don’t think there are many thoroughbred industry authors that have ‘blood’ oozing from their copy, although Andrew Rule (‘Winx’ et al) is an obvious exception to the … well, um, rule. Jessica Owers is another and today she released ‘Magic Millions’ which is effectively a history of the famous Australian thoroughbred auction house.
Vale , Bob Norris
Sad news out of Victoria this week with the death of Bob Norris following a long illness. Unless you’re from Vic – or more specifically the north east of the state – the name might not ring a bell, but to breeding and racing folk in that region, Bob’s legacy stands out like a sale topping colt. Bob worked largely behind the scenes and was, for many years, the farm manager for Bob Scarborough’s hugely prolific Wood Nook Farm at Nagambie.
Cornwall Park Parades ’23 Lineup
With its 7-strong roster of the tried and true, the proven and the promising, Victoria’s Cornwall Park is gearing up for a busy breeding season. Cornwall Park principals, Peter Boyle and Lisa Gordon, were keen to show off the lineup to broodmare owners in two stallion parades on Sunday 20 August, with onlookers also getting their first glimpse of exciting newcomer Wyndspelle.
Micropillar enhanced FRET-CRISPR biosensor for nucleic acid detection
Abstract CRISPR technology has gained widespread adoption for pathogen detection due to its exceptional sensitivity and specificity. Although recent studies have investigated the potential of high-aspect-ratio microstructures in enhancing biochemical applications, their application in CRISPR-based detection has been relatively rare.
Preakness and the Duke of Fiend-ish-ness
The 148th running of the Preakness Stud will be held at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland this Saturday (Sunday morning our time). It’s the middle leg of North America’s famous Triple Crown and Mage is favoured to follow up on his Kentucky Derby success two weeks ago. If he can manage the threepeat he’ll become the 14th horse to achieve the feat and the first since Coolmore’s Justify in 2018. But do we all know how the Preakness got its name?
Extreme Warrior - A Look At His First book
It was something of a given that Extreme Warrior would be well supported by broodmare owners when he retired to Rosemont Stud last spring. After all, Extreme Warrior was a multiple stakes placed 2YO who came out at 3 winning the Group 3 Blue Sapphire and Listed Bel Esprit, while – as the name would suggest – he’s a son of one of Australia’s most exciting stallions in Extreme Choice: indeed, his highest rated 3YO. Oh yes, and he hails from a rock solid black type family.
Your Song value plus at $5,500
Gooree Park has announced that prolific sire, Your Song, will again stand this season at a fee of $5,500. It’s a timely announcement too, coming hot on the hooves of Rhythmic Pulse’s resounding win at Randwick-Kensington on Wednesday – the sprinter’s seventh career victory. Click here for Your Song's full profile.
Dubawi #254 as San Antonio wins Derby trial at Chester
Darley’s sire phenomenon, Dubawi – who produced seven individual Group 1 winners in 2022 – has notched up his 254th stakes winner overnight with 3YO San Antonio capturing a noted Epsom Derby trial: the Boodles Dee Stakes at Chester. It was also the 10th win in the race for trainer, Aidan O’Brien, and courtesy of the win, San Antonio has firmed in Derby markets.
Aclaim For Hava Nageela
Although not listed on the Aquis Farm roster for this spring, Champion British First Season Sire, Aclaim covered 77 mares in 2022 in his sole trip down under. With a host of stakes horses already including last year’s 1,000 Guineas winner Cachet, the son of Acclamation could soon add to the black type tally with the Irish bred Hava Nageela notching up his third straight success in Hong Kong overnight.
Frankie’s Arrest Could Provide Derby Fairytale
Frankel’s 115th stakes winner overnight – in the Group 3 Chester Vase – may well provide champion jockey, Frankie Dettori, with a third and final Epsom Derby after Arrest notched up his third race victory with a 6.5 length romp. The Frankel colt has now moved into the second line of betting for the Derby but the Juddmonte owned colt clearly prefers the softer going. “We had a soft-ground Derby last year so you don't know,” an enthusiastic Dettori said post race.
Bargain buys – between XL and a Coin Toss | Breednet
We all get a little bedazzled at the massive prices forked out for bloodstock: indeed, there have been no less than 46 seven figure lots at the Gold Coast Magic Millions and Inglis Easter alone in 2023. And, of course, there was the $3.6 million for Nimalee and $3.4 million for Montefilia in the space of an hour at the Chairman’s last week. It’s all relative though … a well bred $1 million dollar yearling colt could easily be worth 30 to 40 times that amount if he ends up doing well on the track.
Going Fifteen Rounds with Vinnie
Yarraman Park’s I Am Invincible has experienced any number of highlights over the past couple of seasons: Home Affairs, Imperatriz, In Secret, Lombardo and Marabi to name just a handful of his Group 1 winners. Not surprisingly, such success has been reflected in the sales ring with 17 of his yearlings already in 2023 knocked down for $1 million or greater.
Juvenile Trial Watch – Warwick Farm | Breednet
There were a dozen trials at Warwick Farm on Tuesday with the opening act a win for Golden Slipper winner, Fireburn, but it was the 2YO heats that really caught the attention … especially the performances of some unraced youngsters. Rich Hill Stud’s dual Group 1 winner Ace High is yet to produce a winner but Bjorn Baker’s O’Ziggy could be about to turn that around fairly soon with his impressive trial win.
Vancouver making a pass at Group 1 success
There’s very little chance that Woodside Park’s Mark Dodemaide will be moving far from the TV on Saturday afternoon, particularly given that Overpass will be tackling the sprinting elite in the $1.5 million Doomben 10,000. Fresh from a victory in the inaugural $4 million The Quokka in Perth last month, the Vancouver 4YO is chasing his initial success in a Group 1 event. “If ever a stallion deserved a Group 1 winner it’s Vancouver,” Dodemaide points out.
Torryburn Stud – not just My Country | Breednet
Monumentally picturesque, Torryburn Stud, was the inspiration for Doreatha Mackellar’s famous poem, ‘My Country’ – land of sweeping plains et al – but the farm’s run of success in recent years has hardly been confined to Our Country. On Sunday in Hong Kong the Torryburn Stud bred and sold, Straight Arron, won the Group 3 The Queen Mother Memorial Cup over 2400m on Sunday and is poised for a showdown with superstar, Romantic Warrior, in the Group 1 Champions & Chater Cup.
The Best Kind of Wish
Horse racing can be a harsh mistress and the funeral of Dean Holland is a stark reminder of the dangers facing jockeys every time they hop into a saddle. So, it’s in light of such tragedies that the sweet moments are even sweeter still: case in point being the running of the Group 1 Churchill Downs Stakes on Sunday morning our time. The race was won by Curlin colt, Cody’s Wish, who captured the Group 1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile last November and now has eight wins and four placings from 12 starts.
Breeding to The Mission Quite Literally a Bonus
Promise matched performance at Eagle Farm last Saturday when the Mike Crooks bred & owned, Mishani Warfare, became the first winner for Aquis Farm’s exciting young sire, The Mission. Having his third start – after placings at Toowoomba and Eagle Farm – the Les Ross trained, Mishani Warfare, led throughout in the Moet & Chandon 2YO Handicap over 1200m, scoring with almost two lengths to spare.
Get the Dosh with Woodside's Trifecta
The apt naming of tomorrow’s Group III Red Anchor Stakes contender, Dosh, is an obvious play on his sire, the Written Tycoon stallion, Rich Enuff. Fortunately, form has followed aspiration in this case with the bold, front-running filly heading into Saturday with two wins and two placings from four outings (beaten a lip in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes at her last run) and over $300,000 in stakes. Clearly greater spring riches beckon if they can’t catch her in the Red Anchor.
Telemon Thoroughbreds - Slipper City!
It’s a term usually associated with boxers rather than beefy 550kg thoroughbreds, but Dan Fletcher makes a good point by claiming that – ‘pound for pound’ – Telemon Thoroughbreds is one of the most successful stud farms in Australia.
Bank on the Osbornes
Nestled on the banks of the Broken River in north east Victoria, Riverbank Farm may well be idyllic, but its owners, Russell and Caroline Osborne, are anything but idle.
Wyndholm Has Right Ring to Spring
Since being established in 1985 by prominent Victorian vet, Dr Kim McKellar and his wife Liz, Wyndholm Park Stud has been a constant source of quality performers. So, when the opportunity arose last year to stand the flashy black entire, Ringerdingding, the McKellars didn’t hesitate. After all, Ringerdingding definitely has the attributes to make it as a stallion … certainly in terms of physique and performance.
Westbury Stud - Reliable as Ever
Leading New Zealand nursery, Westbury Stud, is hardly a stranger to success in the Australian spring with wonder mare, Bonneval, winning the Underwood Stakes and Dato Tan Chin Nam, while Miami Bound followed up her VRC Oaks and Wakeful Stakes victories with another blinder in last year’s Moonee Valley Gold Cup.
Aquis Farm - It's All Happening
It’s a fairly safe bet that, come 2.23pm Saturday, everyone associated with Aquis Farm will be either at Toowoomba racecourse or parked in front of a TV somewhere. For the first 2YO race of the season in Queensland, Aquis Farm has a close interest in four of the nine runners: each of them by first season sire, The Mission.
Triple Treat at Oaklands Stud
It’s been a busy couple of months at Queensland’s Oaklands Stud and not likely to slow down any time soon. Sure, every farm has its early starts and long days at this time of year, but Oaklands principal, Neville Stewart, has really been burning the candle – so to speak.
Rosemont - From Shamus to Strasbourg
Victoria’s Rosemont Stud has possibly had better launches into spring, but General Manager Bloodstock, Ryan McEvoy, would be hard pressed naming one. Last Saturday McEvoy – and the rest of Team Rosemont – cheered on as Shamus Award 5YO, Incentivise, stamped his bona fides with a brilliant display in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington. With 7 wins from 10 outings, McEvoy is confident the horse will only get better and equates that projection with Incentivise’s sire.
Firsts for Coolmore
Sleepless nights for stud masters at this time of year are hardly what you’d call a rarity. It doesn’t matter whether it’s big farm or small – whether it’s an army of foal watchers or Robinson Crusoe snatching forty winks next to a foaling alarm – thoroughbred folk are poised to move at a moment’s notice from mid-July to November. However, there’s always the added worry in spring for those farms awaiting the first foals of a prized stallion. Plenty of tossing and turning.
Ilovethisstallion! | Breednet
Noor Elaine Farm’s, Tim Jackson, is pretty confident about the future for the stud’s standard bearer, Iovethiscity … and seemingly with good reason. Despite a stellar racing career with Grahame Begg which included a Group 1 Randwick Guineas victory and placings in both the Group 1 Golden Rose and Group 1 George Main (finishing a neck off the pace in both), Ilovethiscity wasn’t exactly swamped with mares in his first few seasons at stud.
First Trial Winner for Spieth | Breednet
It’s somewhat fitting that the initial 2YO triallists for Aquis Farm’s exciting young sire, Spieth, have made their ‘debut’ at the Gold Coast’s Aquis Park. With the first heat of Monday morning’s barrier trials at the Gold Coast dedicated to 2YOs, all three Spieth youngsters – Victory Moments, Acotango and Wild Botanica – put in promising displays for trainer Kacy Fogden, finishing 1st, 2nd and 4th.
Baker's Dozen for Widden
It was a remarkable Saturday of racing for Widden Stud with seven of its stallions producing 12 winners throughout Australia : eight of those in the city and stakes winners for both Nicconi and Zoustar - And just to top it off, the late and great Widden sire, Sebring, also weighed in with a Group II victory via Superstorm in the Feehan Stakes at Moonee Valley.
Brandeis improves to 5-0 for the first time since 2002 with 11-5 win over Augustana
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Brandeis University baseball team continued its torrid start today, as the Judges wrapped up their 2020 February break trip to Florida with an 11-5 victory over Augustana (Ill.) College. With the win, the Judges improve to 5-0 for their best start since the 2002 season. It also marks the first time in program history that Brandeis has scored 10 or more runs in five straight games.
