TESTAMENT: Para Bellum
Out 10 October, 2025 Via Nuclear Blast Records Words by: Greg Walker At a time when our pioneering bands are quitting the touring grind or retiring altogether, or one-time trailblazers are taking an aeon to release another slab of a mediocre memory of Thrash Metal past, it’s nice to know there’s a pillar of strength we can always rely on in lean times.
Game One-Hundred and Fifty-Two: Seattle Mariners at Kansas City Royals
The Kansas City Royals will take on the Seattle Mariners this evening at Kauffman Stadium. The former has seen their postseason odds evaporate over the last few weeks, while the latter is currently on a W10 that has vaulted them to the top of their division. All the Royals can do is play spoiler at this point while still hoping to capture the hearts and minds of Grass Creek. Kansas City will start Cole Ragans. 2025 has been a real bummer of a season for the erstwhile ace.
Royals Rumblings - News for August 14, 2025
While they still won the series, the Royals felt they let the sweep get away from them: “Every game is critical, obviously,” Royals outfielder Kyle Isbel said. “We are at that time of the year. We are hoping to get hot and win a lot of games. It’s a big homestand coming up and we just gotta keep rolling.” The Royals fell short in an 8-7 loss to the Nationals on Wednesday, sliding another half-game behind the Yankees in the wild-card chase.
Perez’s powerful projectiles pulverize Pirates 4-3
Salvador Perez went yard twice and Jac Caglianone also homered as the Kansas City Royals completed the sweep with a 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals let a scoring opportunity go in the first when Bobby Witt Jr. ripped a ball to left and missed a homer by just a few feet, settling for his MLB-leading 31st double. But Bailey Falter escaped as Vinnie Pasquantino hit a routine flyout to center and Maikel Garcia bounced out 6-3 to end the inning.
Mariners magnify my melancholy, mock my misfortunes, mute Monarchs 3-2
John Froschauer-Imagn Images The Kansas City Royals put together some good rallies tonight but, much to my chagrin, couldn’t sustain any of them or come up with a big hit as they fell 3-2 to the Seattle Mariners tonight at T-Mobile Park. The Royals jumped on Logan Gilbert early. After a hard 6-3 by Jonathan India, Bobby Witt Jr. ripped an opposite field single.
Game Eighty-Seven: Kansas City Royals at Seattle Mariners
Photo by Alika Jenner/Getty Images The Kansas City Royals take on the Seattle Mariners tonight in the third installment of this year’s Battle for Grass Creek. They split the first two games with the winning team plating six in each of them. A victory tonight would secure at least a split in this rare four-game series. Kansas City will start Noah Cameron. In his first nine starts in the majors, Cameron has surpassed even the most optimistic expectations in terms of run prevention, posting a 2.79 ERA.

Rasmussen, Rays relievers remove Royals rallies in 3-0 romp
The Kansas City Royals saw their offensive struggles continue as they were shutout by Drew Rasmussen and four Tampa Bay Rays relievers in a 3-0 loss at Kauffman Stadium tonight.
Game Eighty: Tampa Bay Rays at Kansas City Royals
Peter Aiken-Imagn Images The Tampa Bay baseball club named for sunshine (NOT marine wildlife) will take on the Kansas City baseball club named for a livestock festival (NOT monarchy) this evening at Kauffman Stadium. Kansas City will look to snap an ongoing eight-game home losing streak. The Royals will start Michael Wacha. Despite the lowest strikeout rate of his career, Wacha has enjoyed a very successful season so far with a 3.24 ERA/3.80 FIP in 15 starts.
Royals Rumblings - News for June 19, 2025
Photo by Richard Rodriguez/Getty Images The Maikel Garcia breakout continues with yet another big game last night: The fact that García isn’t trying to hit homers — but has now surpassed his total from last year (seven) — speaks not only to his growth as a player in his third big league season, but also to how consistent he has stayed with his approach and all of the adjustments he made with his swing over the offseason. It’s turned him into one of the Royals’ best hitters.
Game Seventy-Four: Kansas City Royals at Texas Rangers
The Kansas City baseball team that sometimes wears powder blue takes on the Arlington baseball team that sometimes wears powder blue tonight at Globe Death Life Field. Having won last night’s game, Kansas City can win the series with a victory tonight. The Royals will send Kris Bubic to the mound. With his performance this season as well as Cole Ragans’s injuries, Bubic has emerged as the staff ace. With a 1.92 ERA/2.55 FIP in 13 starts, he is firmly part of a crowded AL Cy Young discussion.
Royals Rumblings - News for June 12, 2025
Photo by Jay Biggerstaff/Getty Images ICYMI, Cole Ragans is headed to the IL with a rotator cuff injury: “It wasn’t like I threw a singular pitch and felt something,” Ragans said. “It was nothing like that. After, just got pretty stiff. Did some treatments and stuff. It just never really got better.” After Monday’s off-day and the soreness still lingering while playing catch Tuesday, Ragans went for scans and testing, which revealed the rotator cuff strain.
Royals Rumblings - News for June 5, 2025
Photo by Jeff Le/Getty Images ICYMI, yesterday’s game was postponed due to inclement weather and will be played today as part of a doubleheader. Jac Caglianone felt comfortable in the box in his MLB debut: It was perhaps a rude awakening when Cardinals center fielder Victor Scott II robbed Caglianone of a hit on a 98.4 mph liner into the right-center-field gap and third baseman Nolan Arenado ranged from the shift to nab a 112.1 mph groundout. Caglianone’s fifth at-bat was a 113.9 mph groundout.
Bullpen buttressed by belligerent batting, boys in blue beat bay behemoths 8-2
Photo by Trinity Machan/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images The Kansas City Royals scored early and often while bullpenning their way through an 8-4 victory over the San Francisco Giants this afternoon at Oracle Park. San Francisco ace Logan Webb starting by doing what he typically does by coaxing groundballs from the first two batters. Fortuitously, both of them found holes as Maikel Garcia slapped one the other way before Bobby Witt Jr. punched it through the 5-6 hole.

Game Fifty-One: Kansas City Royals at San Francisco Giants
Photo by Kavin Mistry/MLB Photos via Getty Images The Kansas City Royals will take on the San Francisco Giants this afternoon in the finale of a rematch of the 2014 World Series. Offense has been difficult to come by in this series as the teams split the first two matchups while combining to score nine total runs. Daniel Lynch IV will “start” for Kansas City. I say “start” because this is likely more of an opener situation for a bullpen game.
Lorenzen lashed late, lineup lumped LOB in 4-3 loss
The Kansas City Royals held a lead for most of tonight’s game against the Houston Astros before surrendering a couple late runs to fall 4-3 at Daikin Park. Kansas City had a chance to give Colton Gordon a “welcome to the show” moment in the first inning of his major league debut. Bobby Witt Jr. smoked a liner into left-center that one-hopped the wall. Witt considered holding up at second before putting on the accelerator and sliding into third base with a triple.
Wacha’s wiliness, Witt’s warhead whomp white wearables 2-1
Photo by Jay Biggerstaff/Getty Images The Kansas City Royals once again had an outstanding night on the mound and got all the offense they needed from one swing as they defeated the Chicago White Sox 2-1 tonight at Kauffman Stadium. The first three innings took just 38 minutes to complete.
Royals Rumblings - News for May 1, 2025
Jonathan Dyer-Imagn Images Noah Cameron’s family was on hand for his spectacular MLB debut in last night’s win: Cameron’s dad, Tracy, is from Pattonsburg, Mo., a small town off Interstate 35 northwest of St. Joseph. His mom, Diane, is from St. Joseph. They’ve been Royals fans for “forever,” Diane said, and raised all five of their kids to be, too. Noah is their youngest. All of them were on hand, along with Noah’s wife, Casey, and 1-year-old son, Auggie.
Game Thirty-One: Kansas City Royals at Tampa Bay Rays
Kim Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images The Kansas City Royals will take on the Tampa Bay Rays, who at long last are playing in Tampa, this evening at George M. Steinbrenner field. What a sentence that was. The Royals took last night’s game by a score of 3-1. With a win tonight, they can secure a third consecutive series victory and push their record above .500 for the first time since April 10. Noah Cameron will make his big league debut tonight as Kansas City’s starting pitcher.
Game Nineteen: Kansas City Royals at New York Yankees
Photo by New York Yankees/Getty Images Finishing out a rematch of last year’s ALDS, the Kansas City Royals will take on the New York Yankees. The Yankees have taken both of the few two matchups, so Kansas City will look to salvage the series finale. Kris Bubic takes the ball for the Royals. So far, his hot stretch opening 2023 in the rotation has not looked like a fluke as he has been even better this season.
Royals Rumblings - News for April 10, 2025
Jay Biggerstaff-Imagn Images Sam McDowell at the Star has five takeaways from the first two weeks of the season: Those three hitters in the middle of the order combined for a 1.025 on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS) with runners in scoring position in 2024. Witt was second in baseball at 1.183, Pasquantino 14th and Perez 15th. A year later, that trio has combined for a .695 OPS in those same spots.
Game Twelve: Minnesota Twins at Kansas City Royals
Photo by Scott Winters/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images The Kansas City Royals will do battle with the Minnesota Twins this evening at Kauffman Stadium. Having won the first two games of this four-game set, Kansas City could secure a series victory if they prevail tonight. Seth Lugo will start tonight for the Royals. Though he has a 3.27 ERA across his two starts so far, it’s hard to say that he’s been pitching well. He has struck out just six batters while walking four across 11 innings.

Royals Rumblings - News for March 27, 2025
Photo by Kyle Rivas/MLB Photos via Getty Images Mark Feinsand at MLB talks with J.J. Picollo about his expectations for the 2025 Royals: Last year’s postseason experience – the Royals swept the Orioles in the Wild Card round, then lost a four-game Division Series to the eventual AL champion Yankees – should help the club’s young players as they look to take another step forward in 2025.
Jason Isbell - Foxes in the Snow
With just his dexterous guitar picking fingers and his penchant for hard-nosed, soft-hearted songs, Jason Isbell is back with a new batch of tunes, called Foxes in the Snow. It comes only a year and a half after his full-band album with the 400 Unit, called Weathervanes, which extended his out-of-the-South mythology and the songs here are mostly love songs or songs of heartbreak.
Spring Training Game Eleven: Seattle Mariners at Kansas City Royals
Photo by Chris Bernacchi/Diamond Images via Getty Images The Battle for Grass Creek moves to Surprise tonight as the Royals and Mariners prepare once again to do battle. The Royals have won two straight to bounce back from a brief rough patch as they pursue a Cactus League title. Tonight’s lineup could well be a lineup that we see in April.
Deep Sea Diver - Billboard Heart
“We’re always held together / by tiny little threads / and I think I love you the most / when you’re unraveling,” Jessica Dobson of Deep Sea Diver sings on their latest offering of sometimes disco-infused, alternative rock bangers, called Billboard Heart, which just came out on Subpop Records.
Denison Witmer - Anything At All
“It takes a special kind of mind / If you’re gonna learn to be a clockmaker,” Lancaster, Pennsylvania’s Denison Witmer sings on his latest album of wonderfully rich songs, called Anything At All. He’s a songwriter long in his game, who landed on Sufjan Stevens‘ label Asthmatic Kitty around 2010, and he’s written a slew of album with songs that often deal simply and honestly, with domestic and spiritual themes, something that shows up in spades on his latest release.
Bartees Strange - Horror
“If I can’t get an angle / Tell me, how am I supposed to feel?” Bartees Strange asks with trepidation on his new album, Horror, which comes out on Friday with 4AD. He doesn’t just capture one, but many angles on this stellar new release, resurrecting Prince at times with his funky, sugar-coated guitars and vocals, channeling Bon Iver at other times, in both the lower and higher ranges, with the same gravitas and imagination. He said that the album “is just me trying to connect.

Evaluating Royals relief options
Photo by Greg Fiume/Getty Images Two seasons ago, the Kansas City Royals had one of the worst bullpens in franchise history. Not looking to repeat that, the front office made it a point to improve the relief pitching that offseason. They signed free agents and made trades to that end. Not every move they made worked out, but the bullpen was considerably better in 2024.

If you are reading this, you’ve probably already read the earlier entry breaking down Royals hitter performances in the Arizona Fall League. If you haven’t, go back and read it! We’re back today to do the same for pitchers. Five pitchers from the Royals organization took the field for the Surprise Saguaros.
Michael Kiwanuka - Small Changes
“No heart’s designed / to be alone / but yours and mine / overflow,” UK rock ’n’ soul artist Michael Kiwanuka sings on his latest album, Small Changes. Produced with Danger Mouse and Inflo, it is his follow up to his Mercury Prize winning and Grammy nominated self-titled album after “four long years”, and where that album was a bold and vivacious champion for Civil Rights from across the pond, well deserving of the accolades, his latest album is more subdued and more personal.
NLCS Game Three open thread
Brad Penner-Imagn Images The NLCS shifts to Citi Field tonight as the New York Mets welcome the Los Angeles Dodgers to town. The teams split the first two games with neither being particularly close. The Dodgers will start Walker Buehler, who got blown up early in his NLDS start but managed to grind out five innings against the Padres. The Mets are countering with Luis Severino, who was arguably their best starter in the regular season but has been shaky in October.

Cole carves Corbin’s Camden crew, Kansas City captures commencing contest 1-0
Photo by Patrick Smith/Getty Images In their first postseason game since winning the World Series in 2015, the Kansas City Royals managed just enough offense in a pitcher’s duel to win the Wild Card opener 1-0 over the Baltimore Orioles. Corbin Burnes started the game pounding the zone with cutters and the Royals came out swinging, with Michael Massey blooping one the other way for a leadoff single on Burnes’s second pitch.
Kansas City Royals at Baltimore Orioles
The boys are playing some postseason ball! Kansas City Royals fans, welcome back to the MLB Postseason! It's been nearly a decade since this franchise has participated in the October tournament leading up to the World Series. In that last appearance, nine years ago, Salvador Perez and company hoisted the Commissioner's Trophy. The captain will look to do the same once again with an entirely new team around him.

Game One Hundred and Fifty-Eight: Kansas City Royals at Washington Nationals
Photo by Jess Rapfogel/Getty Images The Kansas City people in a monarchy will take on the Washington people from a nation this evening at Nationals Park in the second game of this three-game set. Kansas City snapped an L7 last night thanks to the zombie runner rule strong performances from the lefties on the pitching staff. They will now look to take the series with a win tonight. Michael Lorenzen will start tonight for the Royals.
Royals Rumblings - News for September 19, 2024
Photo by Justin Berl/MLB Photos via Getty Images The Royals are not panicking about their recent struggles: Time to worry? A two-game lead for a playoff spot is a lot dicier than a four-game lead, which is what the Royals (82-71) would have had if they won Wednesday. But they’ve got nine games left, and getting back on track with some wins is the quickest way to avoid the ensuing chaos as the standings shake out. “I don’t worry about it,” Salvador Perez said. “I think we’re going to be fine.

Detroit Tigers at Kansas City Royals
By Greg Walker via Royals Review, Let's even this bad boy up. The big cat baseball team from Detroit will take on the livestock show baseball team from Kansas City tonight at Kauffman Stadium. Kansas City will look to level the series after dropping last night's opener. Cole Ragans starts for the Royals. I covered his last start in which he pitched quite well aside from one mistake pitch to the second-best hitter in baseball.

You don’t need me to tell you that Ragans is a very good pitcher.
