8 Emerging Risks and Opportunities for Public Companies
From around-the-clock trading and AI-driven investing to shifting disclosure expectations and evolving activist tactics, the 2026 National Investor Relations Institute (NIRI) Annual Conference in June highlighted how quickly the public company landscape is changing. Here are eight developments investor relations, legal, communications and executive teams at public companies should be watching.
Lean Into Risk, Find Resilience - Dix & Eaton – Public Relations, Communications & Marketing
British author C.S. Lewis is often cited for his definition of integrity: doing the right thing even when no one is looking. So, what do we call it when everyone is watching but there are wide-ranging views about what is the right thing to do? Unfortunately, for many companies, that is essentially the definition of today’s business environment.
Unlocking buy-in: The communication strategies behind successful EHS&S pros
EHS and sustainability (EHS&S) professionals bring passion for the work, subject matter expertise and a problem-solving mindset to their jobs. However, getting others (such as the Board, C-suite, other functional leaders and all employees) to buy in and become engaged are often outside a technical professional’s comfort zone. How do you unlock the ability to met these challenges?
‘Time is on your side’ in 2025 for non-calendar year reporting companies
Sustainability/ESG and investor relations teams are operating in a period of unprecedented complexity, uncertainty and ambiguity. Most everything appears to be in flux: strategy, shareholder and stakeholder expectations, regulatory impacts, reporting and communications, and so on.
Four tips for navigating volatility
By most any measure, it’s fair to say that 2025 has had a remarkable start – no matter what your political affiliation, profession or industry. Volatility is everywhere. My colleague Mihaela Grad has “Four Tips for Navigating Volatility” on the Standing Partnership website, and they are truly insightful and thought-provoking: 1. What feels like a sprint will, in fact, be a marathon 2. Consider the impacts on all parties who are important to your organization 3. Revisit your messaging 4.
Elevate Your Sustainability Reporting in a Changing World
In October, we had the honor of attending FORUM24, the annual EHS & Sustainability Management Forum presented by NAEM. The conference, which is the largest annual gathering of sustainability decision-makers, was an excellent opportunity to discuss new directions in the ever-changing world of ESG reporting and how companies can take control of their sustainability narrative, wherever they are on their own sustainability journey.
4 big ideas for communicating beyond the sustainability report - Dix & Eaton – Public Relations, Communications & Marketing
Home / Our Blog / 4 big ideas for communicating beyond the sustainability report How your organization decides to communicate and engage around its sustainability efforts may center on the sustainability report, but it’s also a building block for other opportunities to engage stakeholders. Our latest Brainfood webinar included a number of excellent insights and recommendations, including four big ideas.
Beyond the PDF report: Year-round sustainability communications
The length of the average sustainability report has been steadily increasing – the average length of U.S. sustainability reports surpassed 80 pages in 2023. This is according to the executive consulting firm Teneo, as reported in an October 2023 fact sheet published by the Harvard Law School Forum on Corporate Governance. Companies and their sustainability/ESG, communications, EHS, legal teams pour their heart and soul into the report.
10 things I think about the SEC’s rules on climate-related disclosures
On March 6, 2024, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) adopted rules to enhance and standardize climate-related disclosures by U.S. public companies. Once they start taking full effect in 2025 through 2027, the final rules will require public companies to disclose Scope 1 and 2 emissions, climate-related risks, governance and oversight of climate strategy and reporting, and, in some cases, secure third-party assurance.
Sustainable Innovation: Think Bigger, Broader and Further Ahead
True innovation in sustainability doesn’t stop at making operations, the supply chain and products do less harm. True innovation goes further to focus on doing more good in the world, overturning long-held assumptions, achieving transformative change and contributing a net positive impact. That was one of the key themes coming out of a panel discussion that I moderated at the second annual Sustainability Summit convened by the Greater Cleveland Partnership (GCP) in late January.
Addressing the ESG backlash: it’s time to explain ‘the why’
I woke up Tuesday January 9, 2024, to this Wall Street Journal headline: “The Latest Dirty Word in Corporate America: ESG.” As the 10-year leader of Dix & Eaton’s sustainability/ESG practice, I went to work anyway. And so did all my colleagues, and our clients and contacts, as we all enter the typical “busy season” for sustainability/ESG reporting.
ESG data management: The auditors are already here
The momentum continues toward mandatory reporting on climate and other environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues in California, the U.S. overall and Europe. The looming regulations, and pressure from Boards, legal counsel, customers, investors and stakeholder groups, are influencing what and how companies are reporting. The move toward more metrics-focused reporting is one of the most notable trends.
The 5 unmistakable trends in sustainability/ESG reporting
2023 has been a busy year so far for Dix & Eaton in producing sustainability/ESG reports and annual reports. We have completed about 20 such reports so far this year, another half-dozen or so are currently in development and several others are scheduled to start around early fall.
Mandatory ESG Reporting Coming, But Don’t Expect Clarity & Consistency
ESG regulations, including for mandatory reporting, are probably inevitable, but the specifics are far from certain and we may be a long time from having one consistent, practical global standard. As best practices, voluntary standards and ratings evolve into laws and regulations, the roles in ESG and sustainability for corporate board members, investor relations officers (IROs), and financial and legal professionals are likely to become more important.
‘Thriving in the chaos’ of ESG/sustainability reporting season
What do you do when your work life is consumed by one or more large, complex projects and the vibe around the project is frantic and ambiguous, bordering on chaos?
More than just climate change disclosures
The comment period has closed for the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) proposed Climate Change Disclosure rule. During the 90-day comment period that expired in mid-June, the Commission received more than 10,000 comments.
Who’s Paying Attention to the ‘Keynote Listeners’?
In business conferences and meetings, there is always a lot of attention on the keynote speaker and “whose meeting it is.” In business communications, we’re all about the brand, the reputation, the message, the messenger. The audience is important too, of course, but it’s often so large, complex, diverse and random that you can’t be sure who you’re reaching, who’s ignoring you, what they think of you, or what any of them are likely to do about it.
7 tips for making the most of your analyst/investor day
Companies have been hosting analyst days for forever. While they have certainly evolved over the years, the premise – and promise – of these company-hosted events remains the same: the opportunity to tell your company’s story directly to a room full of key investors and analysts. Sounds pretty straightforward, right? Sure. But our experience with our clients indicates that companies are looking for ways to get more of out their event. After all, a lot of work goes into making analyst days happen.
Communication Matters - Insights from the Team at D&E
Employee apps are on the rise … and for good reason with all the current challenges facing internal communications – multiple channels and messages, employees who might not be in front of a computer, limited budgets, etc. If you aren’t familiar with employee apps, they’re essentially platforms that enable organizations to communicate with employees via smartphones. Most apps can also be accessed on desktops and tablets. Not sure if an app makes sense for your organization?
Cleveland’s RNC communications home run and 6 lessons learned
An ABC News story aired on July 17, the day before the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. The headline read: “Cleveland on the Rise: A Look Back on the City’s Comeback Before RNC.” The story was one of dozens that national and international media produced in July that chronicled Cleveland’s ongoing narrative of a city on the rise. Collectively, the coverage reached millions of people around the world. This coverage didn’t just happen because Cleveland hosted the RNC.
