The Lestrygonians
The décor gives you a flavour of what’s to follow. If it speaks of opulence, it does so discreetly, having no need to flaunt what the customer will take for granted. The one touch of idiosyncrasy is provided by the painting that greets you in reception: a copy, somewhat ghoulish in the context, of Goya’s Saturn Devouring His Children. Perhaps this is a talking point, intended to slow the diners’ progress and thus to prolong anticipation of the meal that awaits you.

The Book of Sheffield
Known for both its industrial roots and arboreal abundance, Sheffield has always been a city of two halves. From elegant parks and gardens to brutalist high-rise estates and the hinterland nightclubs of ‘Centertainment’, it is a city caught between the forges of the past and the melting pot of the present.

Rewilding the Novel
What might fiction that puts humans in their Earthly context look like? Legend tells that Orpheus, ‘the father of song’ who perfected the lyre (from which we derive our word ‘lyric’) sang so sweetly that wild beasts, forgetting their hunger, lay down to listen. It is a compelling image that comes down to us in writing and in mosaics from across the Ancient World, and at its mythopoetic heart lies a plain truth: poetry, especially lyric poetry, has always been in communion with the natural world.
