Living in Tanizaki’s Shadows
An Older Way of Life, a Book to Match It might seem odd that I celebrate the birthday of a man who, if he were still alive, would be 140 years old this July 24. Or that I’ve made a pilgrimage to his grave, which lies in a quiet, unremarkable hillside grove in a temple graveyard on the outskirts of Kyoto. Yet he’s had a large impact on me and changed the direction of my life; his writing convinced me to spend the rest of my time in Japan.

Opportunities for Research on Carbon Management in Longleaf Pine Ecosystems
Abstract : Longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) savannas and woodlands are known for providing numerous ecosystem services such as promoting biodiversity, reducing risk of wildfire and insect outbreaks, and increasing water yields. Hiking Japan's Michinoku Coastal Trail: 4-Day Itinerary in Iwate
At about the 20-kilometer mark from your start, you’ll find the Goishi Kaigan Information Center and a campground. You might want to lighten your load by leaving heavier things here before exploring the rest of the area. It’s worth taking some time. A short walk leads to Kaminari-iwa ("thunder rock"), a massive, 30-meter-tall rock thrust out of the sea millions of years ago. Its name comes from the sound made when waves pound its eroded surface.
Interview with Food Writer Robbie Swinnerton
Updated September 9, 2021 | Restaurants , Japanese Food What was the moment you decided to come to Japan? In late 1979 I was offered a job in Tokyo with a company exporting traditional Japanese foodstuffs. I’d had my eyes fixed on Japan for a couple of years, but didn’t have the wherewithal or a coherent plan. I didn’t need to be asked twice. Do you remember your first meal upon arrival?

GPS Signal Corruption by the Discrete Aurora: Precise Measurements From the Mahali Experiment
Measurements from a dense network of GPS receivers have been used to clarify the relationship between substorm auroras and GPS signal corruption as manifested by loss-of-lock on the received signal. A network of nine receivers was deployed along roadways near the Poker Flat Research Range in central Alaska, with receiver spacing between 15 and 30 km.
What's the Fuss?
Japanese media may be about to receive a wake-up call from BuzzFeed's new Japan operation BuzzFeed is one of those things, like Snapchat, that older people just don’t seem to get. Ask anyone over the age of 35 what the site is about and they are likely to mention cats, lists, viral videos and not a lot else. But the young have gone to it in droves for news and entertainment.
