THE OPERATOR by Gretchen Berg Read by Allyson Ryan
Narrator Allyson Ryan deftly captures the mix of insight and humor in this first novel about the power of gossip and small-town life in the 1950s. With characterizations that are sharp without being unkind, she introduces us to the inhabitants of Wooster, Ohio, where conventionality dominates the social order on the surface of things. Underneath, of course, people are complicated.
THE OPERATOR | Kirkus Reviews
An ever growing list of worries, from a brother with drug problems to a climate change apocalypse, dances through the lively mind of a university librarian. In its clever and seductive replication of the inner monologue of a woman living in this particular moment in history, Offill’s (Dept. of Speculation, 2014, etc.) third novel might be thought of as a more laconic cousin of Lucy Ellmann's Ducks, Newburyport.

Jess Montgomery recommends The Operator
I greatly enjoyed this debut novel, which offered up a slice of small midwest town 1950s life through the point of view of a telephone operator. What a unique premise! The novel threads took awhile to come together, but when they did at the end, what a delicious whole! Reasons I enjoyed this book: Original

Deep Water: '20 Things Better Than Coffee' by Gretchen Berg - Portland Press Herald
This week’s poem takes its place in the long tradition of list poems. The easy part about writing a list poem is that it’s just a list; the hard part is that lists are often boring – they’re filled with the mundane. This is a wonderful, surprising list that tells us more about the speaker of the poem than any biographical statement could.
