Sen. Sanderson brings overdue sunshine - Washington Daily News
Published 2:39 pm Monday, March 17, 2025 In a day when the usual defenders of freedom of speech, press freedom, and open government rights have less available to wage public policy battles for first principles, one state senator stands especially tall. Senator Norm Sanderson (R-Arapahoe), now in his 5th term, is refiling his Government Transparency Act. This measure takes a modest step toward allowing public access to government employee disciplinary records at the state and local levels.

Housing needs for teachers, retirees and job applicants - Washington Daily News
Published 8:29 am Wednesday, February 28, 2024 As Carol and I have gotten older, we have looked at the possibility of downsizing and moving into a smaller house. Our yard and house are quite big and require a lot of work. The yard work I can mostly do but have been advised by the doctor to stay off ladders. We looked at several houses in Beaufort County and are surprised at the number of new houses being built. What we don’t see are smaller starter homes that would be available at a lower price.
Beaufort County is actually getting a brand-new school - Washington Daily News
Published 11:48 am Thursday, February 22, 2024 The new combined school to replace Eastern Elementary and J.C. Tayloe will be an enormous benefit to the county. I was disappointed that the motion to accept the $42 million was not unanimously approved by both boards. If the grant was rejected by Beaufort County; the funds would have went to another county. The $42 million dollars comes to us by way of the North Carolina State Lottery. Goal is to build one new school in each county.
My pets and the Betsy Bailey Nelson Animal Control Facility - Washington Daily News
Published 10:06 am Wednesday, February 14, 2024 Recently, I had one of my pets die. Coco Bear, or Puddin, as we called him was 15 years old and about to turn 16. He was a male Sable Burmese cat and was loved; exceptionally smart compared to other cats we owned over the years. One morning, I went in the kitchen, got his food and put it down at his feeding location in the bedroom.
Downtown Washington, parking and handicap access to Sheriff’s Office - Washington Daily News
Published 1:09 pm Thursday, February 8, 2024 I think most everything Washington has done to downtown is wonderful. It has truly turned Washington into a tourist destination and new things continue to happen. When I go downtown or to the waterfront during the day, I see more people including tourists. One thing that’s really nice are all the stores and good restaurants. Our waterfront has really become special. It’s a fun place to be.
Reducing rates requires nuanced approach - Washington Daily News
Published 1:11 pm Thursday, February 8, 2024 As a homeowner in Beaufort County, I am as upset by the rise in homeowner insurance rates as anyone. However, I think they are justified. From 2010 to 2019, I lived in the Washington historic district. One reason folks settled there is because it was high ground and relatively safe from flooding (the modification of Jack’s Creek has caused problems for some houses in that area).
Rethinking parking in historic downtown: A path toward sustainable progress - Washington Daily News
Published 10:10 am Monday, February 5, 2024 Have you ever circled around Downtown Washington looking for that “perfect” parking spot? I know I sure have. Members of our community often say that we need more parking, but what if I told you that the solution isn’t about adding more spots? Parking, as it currently stands, is free and abundant in our downtown. This generous approach, however, distorts the true demand for parking spaces and inadvertently encourages urban sprawl.
The results of high inflation - Washington Daily News
Published 10:40 am Thursday, February 1, 2024 When I was a little kid, about 70 years ago, my grandmother would complain about how much more expensive things were then when she was young. She would say, “back when I was young, I could buy a loaf of bread for less than 10 cents and meat was dirt cheap.” My father-in-law, who served in World Wars I and II, told me several times that inflation increased after World Wars I and II.
About Beaufort County’s four industrial parks - Washington Daily News
Published 7:20 am Wednesday, January 24, 2024 Industrial parks are way of attracting new business and industry. In Beaufort County, we now have four. The Washington-Beaufort County Industrial Park is the oldest. The main part of the park has several occupants but has available properties to develop. The industrial park road entered from Cherry Run Road has yet to be developed. There are many tenants in the Beaufort County-Washington Industrial Park.
My experiences with video streaming - Washington Daily News
Published 3:14 pm Wednesday, January 17, 2024 Video streaming is the continuous transmission of video files from a server directly to your TV by a streaming service such as Netflix. It is the latest and the greatest? I remember when streaming started in our house. It started when we joined Amazon Prime. It was part of the service which included free shipping. Best of all, there were no commercials on the shows and movies we watched. You just clicked on the show and watched it.
Paramedic service in Beaufort County - Washington Daily News
Published 1:47 pm Thursday, January 11, 2024 Several years ago, my wife fell against the bed and appeared to stop breathing. I pulled her away from the bed and she was breathing but was incoherent. I called 911; Washington Fire and Rescue sent out an advanced life support vehicle and took her directly to the hospital. Luckly, it was just a super high fever and she recovered quickly. Tylenol was all that she needed. It was the flu but could have been much worse.
Thoughts on the upcoming primary elections - Washington Daily News
Published 12:01 pm Tuesday, December 19, 2023 I know quite a bit about primary elections; I ran in several of them. I was fortunate and won a county commissioner seat in 2006 and 2010. I didn’t run again in 2014. I support term limits for some offices including county commissioner. Eight years was enough. The filing period for the 2024 primary has ended. The primary election is March 5, 2024. The in-person early voting period begins Thursday, February 15 and ends Saturday, March 2.
A new school for Beaufort County? - Washington Daily News
Published 8:01 am Wednesday, December 13, 2023 In 2018 and 2019, I performed contract work for Beaufort County Schools. During that time, I had the privilege of doing work in all the schools and performed some tasks that needed to be done. It was a very positive experience. The staff and teachers I worked with were professionals. Do the schools have some problems? Yes, all schools have some problems. Some problems are caused by the state and federal government.

Our commitment to safety in Beaufort County Schools - Washington Daily News
Published 4:01 pm Friday, December 8, 2023 On Monday, Dec. 4, I presented a request to the Beaufort County Commissioners seeking 12 School Resource Officer positions for the upcoming 2024/25 budget year. I am committed to working with the boards to get deputies back in Beaufort County Public Schools by July of 2024.
15th Street traffic and safety concerns - Washington Daily News
Published 11:24 am Thursday, December 7, 2023 I’ve had the honor to live in the Washington area for the last 38 years. I came to Washington in 1984 to work at National Spinning as head of the machine audit program. I was previously at the Warsaw plant as the maintenance manager. Even though I have lived in North Carolina for 45 years, some would still consider me a Yankee. I love living here.
Kevin P. Duffus: All hail Caesar - Washington Daily News
No, I’m not referencing the famous quote from the staged naval battle conceived by Emperor Claudius in 52 AD. Nor am I writing about the 1973 movie titled “Black Caesar—The Cat with the .45 Caliber Claws” starring Fred Williamson and Gloria Hendry. Nor am I thinking of the fake Black Caesar celebrated by polyester pirates in Florida.

General Assembly can still make history - Washington Daily News
General Assembly can still make history Published 7:16 pm Tuesday, November 23, 2021 By SANDY HURLEY and BILL MOSS The North Carolina General Assembly remains poised to make open government history next week when lawmakers return to Raleigh for the last time in 2021. It has been a while since our legislature has made any meaningful improvement to North Carolinians’ right to know about government action and performance through access to state and local government records and meetings.
Politicians hurt students with a teacher shortage; they must fix this now with a better state budget - Washington Daily News
Politicians hurt students with a teacher shortage; they must fix this now with a better state budget By DIANE MITCHELL and DEE GRISSETT If you sat down in the dentist chair, you would think it crazy if the receptionist barged in to say, “Good morning, we’re still trying to hire a hygienist. So between phone calls and scheduling appointments, I’m here to clean your teeth.” It sounds like a Three Stooges skit, but something similar is happening in our public schools.
A chance to end the digital divide - Washington Daily News
A chance to end the digital divide By JIM WEAVER NC Chief Information Officer Across North Carolina, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit it rapidly and radically altered how we work, learn and connect with friends and family. Broadband internet instantly became critical for residents to learn and work remotely, find jobs and even access telemedicine.
Why are Democrats AWOL on public’s right to know? - Washington Daily News
Why are Democrats AWOL on public’s right to know? By PAUL MAUNEY and BILL MOSS With no meaningful state law giving North Carolinians the right to see disciplinary records of those they employ in state and local government jobs, how will we ever know? How will we know about the public school teacher who molested students in numerous mountain schools? About the superintendent of schools in the Piedmont who was fired and paid $250,000 to leave, without so much as a reason?
Do your part to help improve broadband access - Washington Daily News
Do your part to help improve broadband access By Jim Weaver / N.C. Broadband Infrastructure Office Still cannot get high-quality, reliable, high-speed internet service at home? You are not alone. In fact, more than 500,000 North Carolinians do not have access to broadband because of a lack of population density or geographic barriers that prevent internet service providers from connecting to them.
Bill would shine light on closed personnel files - Washington Daily News
Bill would shine light on closed personnel files From Raleigh News and Observer Senate Bill 355 — the Government Transparency Act of 2021 — would at last allow the public to see the disciplinary files of public employees, files that have long been held in secret in this state. North Carolina is one of only 10 states that don’t allow access to disciplinary files. Even if a public employee commits a crime and is convicted, his or her personnel file must remain cloaked in darkness.
Remembering Mac Hodges this holiday season - Washington Daily News
Remembering Mac Hodges this holiday season Mac Hodges never knew a stranger. Whether you knew him as a friend or as the committed mayor of Washington, if you knew Mac, he knew you right back. My family and I knew Mac Hodges as a loving husband, father and grandfather. To me, he was just dad. Washington, and eastern North Carolina in general, is a small, tight knit community. Something that affects one of us, affects us all.

In a divided time, saving local journalism is a bipartisan cause - Washington Daily News
DEAN RIDINGS In a presidential election year and in the midst of the dual crises of the coronavirus pandemic and widespread economic misery, the divisions among Americans can seem to easily overwhelm the bonds that unite us.
Congress needs to act now and extend unemployment benefits - Washington Daily News
Congress needs to act now and extend unemployment benefits By NORTH CAROLINA GOV. ROY COOPER Next week, thousands of North Carolinians who are out of work due to COVID-19 will see a drastic reduction in their unemployment benefits despite this pandemic being far from over. The additional $600 a week unemployed workers have received from the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation program has been a lifeline for struggling families and communities over these past few months.

GUEST EDITORIAL: The reasons I prefer NXT over AEW and why NXT on USA will be consistently outdrawing AEW Dynamite within months
KELLER & POWELL FLAGSHIP (11/14) (Search "pwtorch" to subscribe in podcast app) I watch both NXT on USA and AEW Dynamite, but NXT is my clear preference. They have better top-tier talent, a great women’s division, and their mid-card wrestlers are head and shoulders better than AEW, in my opinion. Looking at the top tier, AEW has: Chris Jericho, who is very old, noticeably slower, and much heavier than in his WWE days.
I considered myself a lapsed fan who appreciates NXT, but here's why I continue to prefer AEW's product -
KELLER & POWELL FLAGSHIP (11/14) (Search "pwtorch" to subscribe in podcast app) I’m what you might call a Lapsed Wrestling fan. I watched a lot during the mid-’90s until the early-2000s. I had a brief resurgence in 2008-2010 when I got into TNA (it was around the time they did a few house shows/tours over here in the UK). I have the WWE Network purely to re-watch this period of wrestling. I would occasionally watch the odd Royal Rumble or WrestleMania, but never followed it week to week.
