1. Introduction The skin barrier is an essential component of normal skin function and is dysregulated in a number of skin diseases in humans and animals. Therefore, it is very important to characterize the skin barrier to be able to describe and better understand the pathogenesis of skin diseases. Atopic dermatitis is a very common skin condition characterized by skin barrier dysfunction, with an estimated prevalence of up to 10% in dogs [1].
