Have you ever used a typewriter?
I bought one when I was 20, and needed a little inspiration for a complex piece. Old-fashioned gadgets might help, I thought. I was wrong.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Not many: a simple laptop, a smartphone, a podcast studio. Pen and paper are still remarkably effective.
Why did you become a journalist?
It started when I covered the Dutch elections of 1986 from the voting booth just behind our house. I was 9. Journalism never left me.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Lately: airports, diners, voting booths and hotels.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
New Yorker
