Summer events in Swansea: Outfit planning
I’m coming to the end of my time at Swansea, and in my three years here I’ve planned my fair share of outfits for a variety of events. Summer events are always a lot of fun to dress for, because you don’t have to worry so much about the weather. Here’s my best advice – a combination of personal experience and predictions. If you’re still not sure by the end of this article, use the SU’s Facebook and Flickr to get inspiration from photos of previous years.
How to wear your Varsity shirt
It’s an iconic element of the Welsh Varsity, it’s included in the £28.50 package, it’s a symbol of solidarity and support, and it’s also hugely unflattering: that’s right, the bright green GWA T-Shirt. Every year, we wake up on a Wednesday morning in April, and don our varsity shirts as the pre-drinks kick off. The sizes may be dodgy, and the colour is questionable, but I say this is an opportunity to show off your creativity.
Style on Campus | Swansea Student Media
This month, I’ve teamed up with one of our photography editors to produce a shoot reflecting some of the fashion and styles you can find around campus. As Valentine’s Day is coming up, we asked our models a few questions about their style, and what they think is the ideal first date outfit. Thank you to the students who got involved! How would you describe your style? ‘Different and eclectic.’ Where do you like to shop for clothes?
How to spring clean your wardrobe
We’re all guilty of hoarding the odd few items at the back of the wardrobe – clothes we haven’t worn all year, a tattered pair of shoes that need to be thrown away, the list goes on. If you were gifted new clothes over the holiday period or given some money to treat yourself with, you might be looking at refreshing your style. This is a better time than any to clear out your closet, and here’s how.
Spring/ Summer ’18 - New year, same fashion editor
There’s no better way to bring our fashion section into 2018 than by looking back on the runways of 2017 to see what trends might appear on the high-street this season. In Milan, Gucci introduced a SS18 collection based on ideas of resistance and individuality – what better themes to draw on for a fresh new style as we kick off a new year? This translates into maximalist, eccentric outfits with echoes of the 80s in glittering dresses, fur coats and boxy shapes.
A Weekend with Dylan Thomas
On the first weekend of November, I made my way into the centre of Swansea to get involved in a celebration of poetry. 2017 marks the sixth anniversary of the Do Not Go Gentle Festival, two days of acts and performances taking place in venues across the city centre. This year, headliners included Francesca Martinez and Tony Law, and the line-up of art, music, comedy and poetry happily coincided with two weeks of events hosted by the Dylan Thomas Centre, remembering the poet’s life and work.
Will you be boycotting fur this winter?
Animal pelts have been symbolic of status all throughout history, as far back as when priests and priestesses wore leopard and lion skin in 3000-300BC Egypt. In the Western World, 11th Century royalty and bourgeois wore derivatives of ermine, mink, sable and chinchilla to flaunt their wealth. Fur became much more accessible for public consumption as a result of colonialism in the 17th and 18th Centuries. By the early 1900s, French designers had begun to make fur a staple in fashion.
Pop Culture & Halloween
Fashion, all throughout history, is influenced by popular culture. Halloween costumes may not be as widely discussed in the fashion world as Haute couture, but they’re a very good example of how the media, the news, and social trends can influence the designs and stylings of the public. With the growth of social media, there’s more and more pressure to come up with something creative, original and relevant for Halloween – no more putting a sheet over your head and calling yourself a ghost.
