Time for goodbyes, EIC parts ways
Haley Galvin, Editor in Chief April 28, 2021 In less than a month, I will finish my senior year at NIU, and with that, my last days at the Northern Star. Since I started at NIU, I have been part of this news organization. Four years ago, I started out as a nervous entertainment writer. Through my time at the Northern Star, I have since found my way and become the confident editor-in-chief I am today. I never envisioned that transformation for myself, not in a million years.

Haley’s story: I am cancer-free
Haley Galvin, Editor in Chief December 24, 2020 If you would have told me six months ago that my birthday would consist of me sitting in a room for five-and-a-half hours getting chemotherapy, I would have told you there was no way. However, that was exactly how I spent my 22nd birthday, at my sixth and final treatment for ovarian cancer. I don’t often say out loud that I have, or had, cancer because while I am technically cancer-free, I still don’t feel entirely done with this journey.
Haley's story: Balancing school and work while fighting cancer
Haley Galvin, Managing Editor November 12, 2020 Being a college student and working at a newspaper was really hard last semester in the midst of the pandemic. Now, this semester, I am helping manage that newspaper, and I am battling cancer, while still taking five college courses. To say that it’s hard is the understatement of a lifetime. And I know there are people with cancer who still have to care for families who deal with much more than I do.
Haley's story: Dating while being diagnosed with cancer
Haley Galvin, Managing Editor November 5, 2020 This is dedicated to my amazing and wonderful boyfriend Matt who I would be lost without. Let’s start this off light. Trying to date while going through chemotherapy is honestly super hard. I can’t go on a date just anywhere. I have a compromised immune system, and we are living in the middle of a pandemic. Fall and the holiday season are my favorite.
Haley's story: Going through chemotherapy treatments
Haley Galvin’s medical reference sheet details important health side effects of chemotherapy. Haley Galvin, Managing Editor October 29, 2020 Chemotherapy: the singular word that I have come to dread the most out of this whole experience. While I did have tumors removed, I decided I was going to go through with the six rounds of chemo that my specialist suggested in order to decrease the likelihood of the cancer coming back.
Haley's story: Being diagnosed with cancer at 21
Haley Galvin Haley Galvin before and after beginning chemotherapy treatments to fight ovarian cancer. Haley Galvin, Managing Editor October 22, 2020 About four months ago, I sat talking to my best friend about how my worst nightmare would be if I wasn’t able to have kids one day. Little did I know, two days after that conversation my doctor would tell me there was a large mass on my abdomen that would make my nightmare come true.

Veterans deserve incredible honor
Growing up, I had three veterans in my immediate family, as well as a few others spread throughout my family tree. Having veterans in my family means that I take a great deal of pride in their service and in observance of Veterans day on Monday. This day means more than just saying thank you. It is a day to recognize those who have risked their lives for our country and recognize the sacrifices that were made. My great uncle was a soldier in Vietnam. He served in the U.S. Army for two years.

100 word rant: telemarketers
As college students, we unknowingly become victims to one of the most annoying aspects of life: telemarketers and scams. Everyone can relate to receiving mysterious calls from an 800 number. You finally get so fed up with it you answer, and it’s someone telling you they are a car service company wanting to wash your windows or a change has been made to a credit card you don’t have. They constantly call until you finally block them.
That time I...went without signal for a week
The forest view surrounding the camper Haley Galvin stays at each summer at Lake Village Family Campground. Courtesy Kristina Kaucky Seven full days with zero cell service. I’m not sure how I managed to make it through. I am constantly on my phone, checking social media until I can’t refresh anymore. It is not something I am proud of, but I admit I should detach myself from it more. That is why my unplugged trip to Indiana was so important for me.
100 word rants: the pros and cons of syllabus week
Pros: Syllabus week is one of the best weeks of the semester. Each class is simply going over the syllabus for the semester and it is a breeze. The endless lecturing hasn’t started yet, and it helps to ease the transition into classes. It is also very helpful to know the professors expectations and assignments for the year. The syllabi always have a tentative schedule and it helps to plan out assignments and mark them in a planner.
Stress can be motivational to students
The semester has begun, and I could not be more stressed. Classes are piling up over my head, and I have not attended any of them yet. I have dug myself into a hole of syllabi stress, and I feel like I will never find my way out. Stress is the worst enemy I face every semester, and I am sure I am not alone. Looking into the sea of faces heading to class, we all have a similar look in our eyes: overwhelming anxiety.

Why staffers love the Northern Star
Catherine Carter | Copy Editor Although I’m an English major and enjoy writing, I don’t consider myself a journalist of any kind. But that’s one of the best things about being a part of the Star. You don’t have to be a journalist. We have people from all different majors doing all different jobs. We have reporters, photographers, editors – there really is a place for everyone here. I’m so grateful I have been able to work at the Northern Star.

What it's like to have trypophobia
My first hand account of: Trypophobia Have you ever seen a beehive or a collection of circles and felt so physically uncomfortable you thought your skin was going to crawl off your body? I’m guessing a lot of people will say no because they don’t have the phobia that I have: trypophobia, or the fear of holes or geometric shapes in certain patterns.
Saving the Earth can be effortless

Retailers should value Thanksgiving
Over the past few years, stores have been opening on Thanksgiving night and diminishing the holiday. Suicide prevention must be taken seriously

Love has no bounds
The “Love has no labels” campaign video speaks to empower people and show that love is love no matter who the person is.The premise of the video is two people behind an X-ray screen in front of the public. The pair display several different forms of affection, including kissing, dancing and generally just enjoying themselves. After a while, the two people reveal themselves. Huskie Bus Line Improves to Ease Student Headaches
The Huskie Bus Line has joined together with TransVAC, making student life easier by providing a more user friendly experience, especially for students who don’t have a car and rely on the Huskie Bus Line to get around campus. NIU’s previous bus system has worked in the past but not always in students’ favor. Students often had to wait half an hour for a bus that would still make them late for class, and the weekends were an even worse hassle.
