Coastal Electric members donate over $40,000 to local schools
This week, the Coastal Electric Cooperative Foundation awarded over $40,000 in Bright Ideas Education Grants to local teachers. Co-op staff surprised teachers with the good news in their classrooms at schools across Bryan, Liberty and McIntosh counties. Primarily funded by Coastal Electric Cooperative members who allow their electric bills to be rounded up to the next dollar through Operation Round Up, Bright Ideas Grants bring teachers’ innovative classroom project ideas to reality.
Our First Investment Withdrawal
The goal of financial independence is to reach a point where you can sustainably live off your investments. So... are we there yet? I don’t know. What I do know is that we have enough invested to work minimally while our kids are young. We will keep reevaluating our finances and determine if or when we need to jump back into full time employment. For now, things look good.

From $500 Down to 6BR Home
Some people purchase real estate as an investment, anticipating price increases and making money from rental payments or property sales. For us, we just wanted to own the place that we live in and be in control of how long we could stay in it, paint walls and remodel as we like, and have set monthly payments that did not increase year-over-year. We ended up hitting the market at the ideal time and with a couple smart decisions and bold moves, we now outright own our amazing new home.
2 Ways To Calculate Net Worth
This post contains affiliate links, meaning I get a commission if you decide to sign up for their service using my link, at no additional cost to you. I only link to products I know and trust. Simply put, net worth is what you have minus what you owe. It’s a way to measure your financial standing, what you’re “worth” financially, how much money you have to your name, or however you want to state it. But the details of how to calculate net worth are nuanced and sometimes confusing.
6 Month RV Road Trip Expenses
In the summer of 2022, we went on a 6-month RV adventure around the US as part of our big year of changes. The experience of living out of an RV and seeing all of the lower 48 states with our 2yo and 3yo boys was priceless, but how much did it actually cost? I finally decided to dig up our bills and add it up. In the fall of 2021, before we decided to flip our lives upside down, I had roughly calculated our annual expenses as $126,000, or $10,500/mo.
Why Do English and Spanish Both Have "No"?
Despite some similar vocabulary, Spanish and English aren't closely related languages. Spanish is a Romance language that came from Latin. English, on the other hand, is a Germanic language and is more closely related to Dutch or German than it is Spanish. The fact that English and Spanish share some similar words isn't surprising. Languages are constantly borrowing words from other languages. When there's a gap in one language, its speakers might take a word from another language to fill it.
How Many Words Do You Use a Day?
We use a lot of words every single day, but chances are you’ve never stopped to count how many words you’ve spoken or written. It’s the sort of question that you might have been curious about, but you’re never going to count for yourself. So let’s take a look at how many words you might be using in a given day. First, we should probably agree on what a word even is.
I'll Have the Cow, Please
When you hear the word chicken, do you think of the animal or the meat? Most likely, you rely on context to tell you which meaning of the word is being used. On the other hand, if you order cow in a restaurant, the waiter may know what you're talking about, but they might raise an eyebrow at your unusual word choice. Pork is another word that seems disconnected from the animal it comes from. Even deer meat is usually called venison instead of deer. English isn't unique in this.
