Boyd, D., Lankford, H., Loeb, S., & Wyckoff, J. (2008). The impact of assessment and accountability on teacher recruitment and retention: Are there unintended consequences?. Public Finance Review, 36(1), 88-111.
This article explores the relationship between school contextual factors and teacher retention decisions in New York City. The relatively low status of teaching as a profession is often given as a factor contributing to the difficulty of recruiting teachers, the middling performance of American students on international assessments, and the well-documented decline in the relative academic ability of teachers through the 1990s.
