China’s EV weight problem
Cars are getting bigger and heavier globally, and this is particularly true for electric vehicles (EVs). China builds and buys more EVs than any other nation and the upsizing trend has taken root there too. Some of the country’s fastest sales growth in recent years has been in medium-large and large SUVs. In the first four months of 2026, an average EV sold in China weighed almost two tonnes – up 27.5 per cent on 2020. Some large SUVs weigh over three tonnes.

This paper establishes a finite-aperture model for pattern-reconfigurable antennas (PRAs) and exploits its aperture-constrained Fourier representation to develop an efficient multiuser beamforming framework. First, we develop an ideal model by representing the complex radiation pattern using a Fourier series.
Why couldn’t NGOs sue to stop blasting of Chinese white dolphin habitat?
When protectors of the vulnerable Chinese white dolphin learned that underwater blasting was to take place in an important habitat, they used all available means to stop it. The reef blasting was set to occur in Weitou Bay, Fujian province, as part of a pier construction project. The volunteers examined potential legal breaches. They contacted the authorities to establish what was happening. All the while they raised public awareness through press and social media. Things moved quickly.
China’s vulnerable outdoor workers face extreme heat
“High temperatures can affect workers’ reaction speed and coordination, thereby reducing productivity or even increasing the chance of work-related injuries,” Zhao Mengzhen tells Dialogue Earth. She is one of the authors of the 2024 Lancet Countdown report on health and climate change in China and an associate professor at the Beijing Institute of Technology.

China will accept return of its migrants from the US
Anyone desperate to leave China as part of an ongoing exodus known as the “run" movement may need to find alternate destinations, as the repatriation of Chinese migrants from the United States looks increasingly likely. China on Monday pledged to accept the return of Chinese migrants in the United States after President Donald Trump threatened to hit Colombia with tariffs of up to 50% for refusing to take back its migrants amid an ongoing crackdown on immigration.

Protesters rally outside Chinese 'police service station' amid spy accusations Original
Protesters gathered outside a Chinese “police service station” in New York – believed to serve as a base to spy on dissidents – and two Chinese consulates in California over the weekend amid growing calls in the United States, Canada and around the world for curbs on Beijing’s overseas influence activities.
China’s ocean power stations set to go commercial
The ebb and flow of the tide powers a turbine while the sun shines on solar panels. In May 2022, China’s first combined tidal and solar power station started feeding electricity to the grid, and the media waxed lyrical: “The sun and moon work together to generate power both above and below the waves.” This is a new model for power generation in China and marks an important step forward for integrated ocean energy. It is expected the electricity generated will power 30,000 homes.
China's recent wave of protests could see a resurgence in the coming year: analysts Original
The recent wave of ‘white paper’ movement and the New Year’s protests over a nationwide ban on fireworks could be the beginning of a broader political resistance to authoritarian rule under Chinese President Xi Jinping, exiled political activists said in recent interviews. Veteran dissidents who have spent decades campaigning for, thinking and writing about democracy in China said the momentum of the recent protests is likely far from spent.
To meet global food demand, aquaculture needs more policy support and research
Globally, per capita fish consumption has doubled since 1960. The proportion of farmed fish compared to wild-caught grew from negligible to 52% of all fish for direct human consumption by 2018, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. Aquaculture is hugely important for food and nutrition security, livelihoods and employment. The potential of the sector, and the role it will play in future food systems, is becoming ever more vital.
Protecting the ocean, from the land
There is an expanse of wetland where the Yellow River flows into the sea in Dongying, Shandong province, where birds gather and seawater laps over the grasses and shrubs. Here, in October last year, the National Park Administration approved the creation of China’s first “integrated land–sea” national park. National parks sit at the top of the administrative hierarchy of China’s system of protected areas. This one will cover almost 3,500km2 – about 40% of that land, the rest ocean.

Authorities in Hong Kong have refused a visa application for a U.S. legal scholar specializing in human rights law, amid an ongoing crackdown on public dissent and political opposition under a draconian national security law imposed by the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Rights group casts doubt on Chinese state media claim that Peng Shuai isn't 'missing'
Recent assurances from Chinese state media that tennis star Peng Shuai is safe and well should be taken with a pinch of salt, a U.S.-based rights group and the head of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) have said. Peng has been incommunicado since she accused a former ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leader of pressuring her into a sexual relationship in a Nov.
What’s causing plagues of seastars?
“Lots of attention is paid during an outbreak, but the seastars soon disappear,” said one researcher at the Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences. Commenting on a plague of Northern Pacific seastars (Asterias amurensis) that struck Shandong’s Jiaozhou Bay in March, she said the species is a regular presence that occasionally explodes in number before returning to normal.
