There is no doubt that we have seen setbacks in the hydrogen mobility sector in recent years. While this ‘age of realism’ has still seen a seven-fold increase in committed capital for hydrogen projects reaching final investment decision (FID) in the past four years1, sceptics question the role of hydrogen outside sectors where no viable alternatives currently exist, such as in the production of ammonia or sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
The heavy-duty trucking sector is responsible for 6% of the CO2 emissions in the EU. Only two technological solutions are available for decarbonization: batteries and green hydrogen, and both pathways are being investigated by the truck manufacturers. The Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is the most important KPI of the logistics industry, and that’s why both zero emission technologies have to be assessed carefully throughout the whole value chain and compared with today’s diesel based trucking cost.
