Let the Winter Reading Club begin
It’s Dec. 1 and I cannot contain my holiday spirit anymore. Not that I was doing such a great job suppressing it. (My tree has been up since mid-November.) This overabundance of holiday spirit is certainly due in part to the fact that I’ve been putting together the flyers and other information about our winter library programs. At the library, Dec. 1 doesn’t just mean the official kick off to our winter and holiday programming, it’s also the start of the ever-popular Winter Reading Club.
Multiple genes implicated in suicide by family genome study
26 November 2018 Four genetic variants have been found to be more common in suicide victims. Scientists analysed DNA samples from more than 1300 people who had died from suicide in the state of Utah in the USA. Their results, published in Medical Psychiatry, suggest a genetic component to an individual's risk of suicide.
Stan Lee was beloved by many
This week, Marvel founder Stan Lee passed away at the age of 95. The feisty co-creator of Spider-Man, Thor, Black Panther, and more was beloved not only by generations of comic fans around the world, but he was also held in high respect in the library world. The Delaware County District Library’s Great GeekFest comic-con is always host to several Marvel characters, and on our list of pie-in-the-sky dream speakers, Lee was at the very top. He was the father of making geeky cool.
Video Review: A groundbreaking way to stop mitochondrial disease - TedMed
'Every time somebody decides to have a baby, they're engaging in a game of Russian roulette,' argues Professor Mary Herbert, a reproductive biologist at the University of Newcastle. Around 60-70 percent of fertilised eggs will never make it to pregnancy. You could see simply being here as a sign that we have beaten the odds. 'We are all survivors – well done,' she congratulates the audience.

Bury CCG confirms IVF cuts from three cycles to one per couple
A six-week public consultation in relation to IVF provision in Bury has resulted in the reduction of treatment cycles that couples can receive. From 1 October, new couples referred for IVF within the CCG (Clinical Commissioning Group), will be capped to a single NHS-funded cycle - down from three. The consultation period could have seen free fertility treatment in the area entirely scrapped.
Seeing 'The Parent Trap' as a Closeted Transgender Teen
The 1998 Parent Trap remake is a touchstone of the cinematic radar for countless millennial ladies now trudging into adulthood. You likely remember the ascent of the now fallen-angel Lindsay Lohan, or recall being wowed by Disney magic turning a single tween into twins. What I will never forget about The Parent Trap — as a deeply closeted teenage transgender girl — is weaving a convoluted parent trap of my own just to see it.
Summer is great time to get creative
While summertime can be hectic and busy for some, it can also be a chance to try something new or get creative with crafts. Sometimes crafts bring to mind glue sticks, glitter, and little hands covered in paint, but Delaware County District Library offers great programs for adults to get crafty, too. The Delaware Main Library offers monthly crafting sessions on one Saturday a month. Dubbed “Crafterday,” this class gets together to make a craft in a casual environment.
Research your family’s history at DCDL
It’s become popular in the past few years to take a climb through one’s family tree. From personal searches to those inspired by the television show “Who Do You Think You Are?,” genealogy has become a popular pastime with Delaware County District Library patrons. It’s a fascinating exploration into your past to find out where we came from and how that informs who we are today. DCDL is lucky to have the Delaware County Genealogical Society working out of our Delaware Main Library.
CRISPR study finds resistance mutations to key cancer drugs
DNA mutations that give tumours resistance to a new class of breast and ovarian cancer drugs have been discovered. An international team of scientists used the CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing system to create mutations in a gene called PARP1. This gene plays an important in the repair of DNA, a key function of any living cell. Certain cancer drugs, known as PARP inhibitors, target this repair pathway in cancerous cells, in order to slow or prevent a tumour's growth.
Human Cell Atlas releases first data
The first major dataset from the Human Cell Atlas, a multi-year effort to catalogue the estimated 37.2 trillion cells of the human body, has been released. The genomic data, available for download now, is from more than half a million immune cells. 'The immune system is deeply complex, involved in many diseases, and distributed throughout our body,' said Dr Monika Kowalczyk, a haematologist who led the experimental team at the Broad Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

USA announces $190 million for genome editing research
The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) has announced a plan to grant US$190 million for genome editing research. The new programme, Somatic Cell Genome Editing, which is supported by the NIH Common Fund will award funds to biomedical researchers over the next six years. Skin colour genes study gives evolutionary insights
Some dark skin tones have evolved relatively recently from paler genetic variants. A study of genetic variation and skin colour in African populations has illuminated a number of gene variants that have a role in determining the levels of pigmentation expressed in the skin and their likely evolutionary basis.
As a Jewish Trans Woman, I’m Horrified by the New Military Ban
In just three tweets Wednesday morning, Commander in Chief Donald Trump squashed decades of social progress and legitimate preparation to lift a ban on transgender people serving in our country’s armed forces. Besides wreaking of distraction puffery, diverting the media from a critical 20-hour health care debate, these words have far-reaching implications in spreading misconceptions and inciting violence against trans people.
I Am A Transgender Zionist & An Anti-Israel Ambush Won't Stop Me
I had been looking forward to New York City's Celebrate Israel Parade on June 4, as the annual event is part of my own coming out story. I am a proud young Jewish transgender woman, and the 2013 parade was one of my first public appearances as "Hannah." Queer Jewish events gave me a place to go out as a female, before this persona was ready for prime time. I marched with Jewish Queer Youth, a nonprofit I regularly volunteer with here in New York.
Commentary: Anti-Transgender Bus Invades New York City
Growing up, the big yellow "Magic School Bus" symbolized the wonders of the world around us. It sprouted rockets to visit the stars, became a submarine to cross oceans and could shrink to enter a human body. However, there's a new bus in town, and the bright orange monstrosity is certainly not about opening anyone's eyes. In fact, it's trying to do quite the opposite.
Opinion: The Dignity Cost of Being Trans (or How I Failed as an Advocate) - NBC News
It was just another normal day in the airport security line. This time I was departing Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. As a transgender woman and frequent traveler, I always opt-out of the new-fangled body scanners in favor of the pat-down. Always. It has been well documented that these millimeter wave and backscatter x-rays machines collect a detailed image of one's body through clothing. Software limits the readout to a generic human form with blocks over any suspected anomalous regions.
Transgender Bathroom Law Trans Woman Public Restroom
Editor's note: Hannah Simpson is a transgender advocate. The views expressed here are her own. It seems hard to believe now because of how far I have come, but I only began living “full-time” as a female, at age 29, two years ago. I had grown my hair long, been taking prescribed female hormones for over a year, and was finally ready to reveal myself to the world. I was also in my second year of medical school in Harlem.
