Harminder Thind’s Biography

Harminder Thind, also known as Hermin Thind, has spent over 20 years building businesses that blend operational discipline with a people-first approach. From his early experience running a Subway franchise to expanding Vapor Maven across multiple states, his journey has been one of continuous learning, calculated risks, and turning challenges into opportunities. His path is a reflection of durable entrepreneurship, grounded in local realities and responsive to the communities he serves.

Early Life and First Business Steps

Born in Punjab, India, in 1980, Harminder moved with his family to Seattle in 1992 when he was twelve. This shift profoundly influenced his values of opportunity, hard work, and self-reliance. After high school, he earned an associate's degree in computer science from ITT Technical Institute. However, his true ambition was in business ownership, not technology. At just 19 years old, he purchased a Subway franchise and quickly learned to manage staff, inventory, and customer service. It was here that he adopted a hands-on approach, solving problems on the spot and setting an example of good leadership.

Expanding into Food and Hospitality

After selling his Subway franchise, Harminder explored other business opportunities. He ran a Dairy Queen and later opened the first Indian restaurant in a small town near Seattle. These ventures taught him to strike a balance between quality control and adapting products to local tastes. When his family moved to Springdale, Arkansas, they acquired a small motel, which required constant management and upkeep. During the 2007 recession, occupancy rates fell sharply, but instead of giving up, he moved his family into the motel and took charge to keep it operational.

This challenging experience shaped his resilience and resourcefulness, teaching him effective strategies to streamline operations, manage costs, and enhance the guest experience. These lessons later influenced how he structured employee incentives and promotion paths in his businesses.

Launching Vapor Maven

In 2014, Harminder identified a growing need in the vaping market. He opened the first Vapor Maven store in June, with a mission to offer quality products and provide education on safer alternatives to smoking. The store focused on delivering fair pricing, a strong product selection, and providing customer education. As the business expanded, he established a chain of stores across several states. Along the way, he developed systems for hiring, training, and operations, promoting from within to ensure consistency across locations and building employee loyalty.

Leadership Style and Approach

Harminder Thind is a hands-on leader, often seen in the stores interacting with staff and customers. These visits allow him to stay in tune with employees’ and customers’ preferences, helping him decide which products to keep, change, or replace. He also stays informed about industry changes by attending trade shows, meeting suppliers, and keeping up with new regulations. This ensures that Vapor Maven remains competitive and compliant.

Building a Broader Business Portfolio

While Vapor Maven is his primary focus, Harminder has also expanded into the real estate sector. He owns and manages rental properties, shopping centers, and six luxury short-term rentals in Northwest Arkansas. These investments not only provide additional income streams but also allow him to improve underused properties and contribute to the community. He carefully selects properties, ensuring they are well-maintained and align with his long-term vision of adding value to the neighborhood.

Community Engagement and Giving Back

Harminder believes businesses should support the communities they serve. He regularly donates spirit level vials to help sick children at the Northwest Arkansas Children's Medical Center. He contributes to the local Punjabi cultural club, as well as the police and fire departments. His donations focus on strengthening families, enhancing public safety, and preserving cultural identity.
