Straightforward for Swiatek in Melbourne
World number one Iga Swiatek put her first-round struggles behind her as she eased past Camila Osorio at a soggy Australian Open. Swiatek had to fight back from 5-3 down in the second set against Jule Niemeier on Monday but was much more comfortable in her 6-2 6-3 success against Colombian Osorio to reach round three. The negative for the Pole was that her serve was broken three times, including when she served for the match at 5-1 in the second set, but she took her next opportunity.
Champions Cup: The permutations for the Irish provinces
With three of the four rounds complete in the Heineken Champions Cup pool stage, eight of the last 16 teams are now confirmed, but there's still a lot of jostling to be done for the final seedings this weekend. Leinster are qualified and almost certain to have a home tie, while things are less sure for Munster and Ulster.
Nadal's Aussie Open defence ends in the second round
Rafael Nadal's defence of his Australian Open title ended in injury and defeat by American Mackenzie McDonald in the second round. The top seed was already in trouble at a set and a break down to unseeded McDonald when he crouched down in obvious pain clutching his left hip after chasing out wide for a forehand. Nadal called for the trainer after limping through the rest of the game and headed off court for treatment.
Selby crashes out as O'Sullivan and Trump march on
Mark Selby crashed out of the World Grand Prix after a 4-1 upset defeat against Noppon Saengkham but there were first-round wins for Ronnie O'Sullivan and Masters champion Judd Trump. Selby, who won the most recent ranking event at last month’s English Open by beating Luca Brecel in the final, was comprehensively outgunned by his Thai opponent.
Resilient Connacht still fighting on two fronts
What a difference a couple of weeks, and wins, have made for Connacht. The Westerners' season was on the brink following the festive defeats to Ulster and Leinster, but bonus-point wins over the Cell C Sharks and Brive's second strings means they are back fighting on two fronts.
'It's great to be on this journey with best friends'
These are heady days for Watty Graham's Glen club. In 2019 they reached their first Derry senior county final, squeezed out by Magherafelt by the bare minimum on the day. Many viewed it, not unreasonably, as a huge year for the club, but that perhaps silverware would take more time. Many off the conveyor belt of minor winners – the club won four county titles on the trot starting in 2011 – were coming into a team that lost its senior status for a number of years.
Klopp lauds Liverpool reaction to Brighton humbling
Jurgen Klopp hailed Liverpool's powers of recovery after they edged past Wolves in the FA Cup. Harvey Elliott's first-half stunner booked a fourth-round trip to Brighton as the holders kept their defence alive with a 1-0 win. The Reds were demolished 3-0 at the Amex in the Premier League on Saturday - with Klopp calling it the worst performance of his managerial career - but believes his side responded at Molineux.
Long and Sykes on target in third round
Birmingham City produced a second-half comeback to avoid an FA third-round upset with Republic of Ireland international Kevin Long scoring the winner in a 2-1 success at Forest Green Rovers. Lukas Jutkiewicz was also on the mark as the Championship side went through despite a scare from League One's bottom club. A Ben Stevenson stunner after seven minutes put Rovers in front but Blues fought back to reach the fourth round.
Elliott ensures Liverpool passage to fourth round
Harvey Elliott fired Liverpool into the FA Cup fourth round as the holders held on for a 1-0 win at Wolves. The 19-year-old's fourth goal of the season squeezed Jurgen Klopp's men past their hosts. The lights went out at Molineux inside the opening minute but Liverpool stoked the embers of a fading season to keep their FA Cup defence alive. Their reward is a return trip to Brighton, which will come just two weeks after Saturday's 3-0 Premier League thumping.
Gunnarsdottir wins claim against Lyon on pregnancy pay
French club Lyon were ordered by FIFA to compensate former player Sara Bjork Gunnarsdottir for an effective pay cut during her pregnancy. The 32-year-old on Tuesday hailed the ruling as a guarantee of financial security for all female players, in an open letter published in The Players' Tribune. Global players' union FIFPro also hailed what they called "a landmark ruling", a decision passed down by the FIFA football tribunal in May 2022.
Moaning mobile phone heard during BBC FA Cup coverage
Gary Lineker revealed the loud moaning noises heard during the BBC's live coverage of the FA Cup clash between Wolves and Liverpool were caused by a hidden mobile phone "taped to the back of the set". The BBC presenter was previewing the third-round replay in a studio at Molineux alongside pundits Paul Ince and Danny Murphy when awkward and audible pornographic wails broke out in the background.

Man charged with attack on Arsenal keeper Ramsdale
A 35-year-old man has been charged with assaulting Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale during Sunday's north London derby. Ramsdale was attacked after his side completed a 2-0 victory over Tottenham in the Premier League. Joseph Watts is accused of assault by beating, going onto an area adjacent to the playing area and throwing a missile onto a football playing area, the London Metropolitan Police said.
Breen remains a doubt for Munster ahead of decider
Munster could be without Ireland international Enya Breen once again for this Saturday's Vodafone Interprovincial Series finale against Connacht at the Sportsground (1pm). The centre missed Saturday's Round 2 win against Leinster at Musgrave Park after suffering a knock in the opening win against Ulster. And Munster assistant Fiona Hayes admits Breen may not be cleared to play, ahead of a busy period with Ireland's Combined Provinces team, as well as the Six Nations in the Spring.
Flightline rated the equal of Frankel
Trainer John Sadler was thrilled to see the remarkable Flightline named the 2022 Longines World's Best Racehorse at a glittering awards event in London on Tuesday. With an official rating of 140, Flightline equals Frankel’s benchmark set in 2012 under the current system. Previously, the highest rating given to a dirt horse was the 135 achieved by Cigar in 1996.
Ineos enters bidding process to buy Manchester United
Jim Ratcliffe's firm Ineos has officially entered the bidding to buy Manchester United. Ratcliffe, one of the richest men in the UK, has been linked with a takeover of the Premier League giants after the Glazer family, the current owners, announced last year they were willing to listen to offers. A spokesperson for Ineos told the PA news agency: "We have formally put ourselves into the process." More to follow
Gaelic Warrior wins easily again at Clonmel
Gaelic Warrior set himself up for a potential crack at the Betfair Hurdle with an effortless win at Clonmel. Given he was sent off the 1-14 favourite in the Munster Hurdle on a card transferred after being cancelled last week, he was only doing what was expected of him. But having won by over 80 lengths on what was his Irish debut at Tramore in December, the Boodles Hurdle runner-up once again showed he possesses a big engine.
