How Heather Chavez Comes Up With Characters
Before I was a writer, I was a voracious reader. In elementary school, I consumed books the way other kids might consume candy: quickly, grabbing any I could find. My dad’s old paperback copy of James Michener’s Hawaii. My aunt’s stash of Harlequin romances. My own gifted copies of Nancy Drew mysteries. And, of course, the book that changed everything for me—Dean Koontz’s Whispers. As an adult, I wrote a very bad first novel. And another. And another.
6 Crime and Horror Books Featuring Unusual Narrators
As I write this essay at the start of fire season, the skies near me are smoky from a blaze north of where I live. For many residents of wildfire-prone areas, the smell of smoke or strong gusts on a hot day can be triggering. We check our apps or bookmarked links. We text friends and family. Some of us pack go-bags, or record quick videos to document our belongings.
Killers with a Code
Morally ambiguous characters wouldn’t make the best of friends, but they do make for interesting books. So—why is it that readers are often able to root for fictional killers, who violate one of the basic tenets of society: the right to life? That’s one of the questions I asked myself when I started writing Before She Finds Me, which features Ren Petrovic, a pregnant assassin who targets those she and her husband deem worthy of punishment.

Seven Books Where Fun and Games Threaten to Turn Fatal
Whether it’s movies like The Game and Ready or Not, dystopian science fiction like Ready Player One, or thrillers like the ones listed below, there’s something fascinating about stories where a game turns deadly. Bit of advice for any character in a book like this: If someone asks if you want to play a game, your go-to answer should be “definitely not.” In my sophomore thriller Blood Will Tell, the six friends gathered near a Northern California ghost town don’t heed that advice.

NO BAD DEED by Heather Chavez Read by Megan Tusing
If you're a fan of twists and turns, whodunits, and why'd-they-do-its, this is a must-listen. Narrator Megan Tusing does a great job capturing this engaging mystery. Is it true that no good deed goes unpunished? Throughout, the surprises come fast and furious. Did her husband play a role in the unfolding mystery?
Mystery Scene
In this debut domestic thriller from Heather Chavez, veterinarian Cassie Larkin fears her husband, Sam, is having an affair. Everything points to it, and she knows she is as much to blame as he. She works late, misses the kids’ extracurricular events, and generally does not give Sam the attention she knows he deserves. On her way home from work one night—late as usual—she interrupts a violent confrontation between a woman and a man.

When the Detective Is Also a Protective Parent
Being a parent is difficult enough when dealing with the usual challenges, such as surviving a colicky infant or teaching a teenager to drive. (Seriously, either of these could be the subject of a decent thriller. Truly frightening.) But what happens when you add in the professional stress of, say, investigating a murder? While No Bad Deed’s Cassie Larkin works as a veterinarian, not in law enforcement, she’s dealing with her own work-related stress when the novel opens.

Review by Diane H, Reviewer Last updated on 18 Feb 2020 My Recommendation “If my kids had been with me, it wouldn’t have happened. I would have stayed in the minivan, doors locked, windows rolled up. Just like the 911 operator instructed.” Instead Cassie confronts a knife-wielding assassin, who warns her, “Let her die, and I’ll let you live.” When the man races up and steals her van with her purse and personal information, Cassie worries about his threat—not just to herself but also to her family.

Review by Heidi W, Reviewer Last updated on 02 Mar 2020 My Recommendation No Bad deed starts off as a face pace thriller. Pulling readers into Cassie Larkin world until the author takes a wrong turn and the story slows down to the point readers will be skipping pages to finish the book. I wish I could say the story will leave readers content instead reader will be left wondering if they are reading the same book. The book end up a mess of eye rolling disbelief that this is the same story.
