What was your first job as a journalist?
I was a stringer for the Bay Area Reporter, San Francisco's LGBT newspaper.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes! And it was awful. You really have to know how to type to use one of those because you can't go back and fix your mistakes.
What's your favorite drink?
If I have to pick just one, it's coffee. But Belgian style beer and wine from California are also near the top of my list.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
At calhealthreport.org, we cover health in disadvantaged communities. I get so many pitches that have nothing to do with what we cover.
