A word to readers who “love the Bugle”
By Helen Warren Managing editor Scott Carlson invited me to address Park Bugle readers as I complete six years on the Park Bugle board, the maximum term of service permitted in the board’s bylaws. Over that period, I’ve had frequent conversations with Bugle readers at community gathering spots. Many occurred at the Bugle booth at the St. Anthony Park Arts Festival or in Langford Park after the 4th in the Park parade.
Can One Lawyer Represent Both Parties In A Divorce Settlement?
Yes, using the 'One Couple, One Lawyer' approach. Specialist Divorce lawyer Linda Pope explains how this new approach to divorce works in practice. Couples seeking a more co-operative approach to the arrangements to be made following the breakdown of a relationship now have the opportunity of using the 'One Couple, One Lawyer' model for most family related disputes including divorce, separation, financial matters and the arrangements for their children.
We must retain hope and conversation

I was impressed by the powerful certainty of his claims, alarmed by his insistence that President Donald Trump would pardon Derek Chauvin and attuned to his distinction between "active resistance" and "incoherent panic" as descriptors of George Floyd's response to the actions of Minneapolis police.

By Helen B. Warren It’s November, and the Park Bugle fund drive is underway. At press time. more than 110 donors have contributed approximately $22,000 to support community journalism since the start of our 2024-25 fiscal year. Their support is gratifying. The staff, writers and board members of the Park Bugle offer their warm thanks for this support. To honor the Park Bugle’s 50th anniversary, we asked donors to make a special gift in 2024.
Ben Quie & Sons open new headquarters with a flair
By Helen B. Warren When Ben Quie and son Sam celebrated the opening of the new headquarters for their design-build remodeling firm, the duo did so with a bit of flair: They used a battery powered saw for their ceremonial ribbon cutting. As the ribbon fell away, Ben said, “I feel really proud of what Sam and I have built.” He was also grateful many friends shared the milestone on Oct. 8 with them in the move from Energy Park Drive to 2448 Larpenteur Ave.
Are Pre-nuptial Agreements Just For Wealthy Couples?
Divorce solicitor Helen Warren explains why pre-nuptial agreements, or pre-nups, aren't just for wealthy couples, and why all couples considering marriageorcivil partnership should consider a pre-nup. You may have read in the news that Rupert Murdoch, now 92, has not been put off by four failed marriages and is planning on marrying again for the fifth time. It is reported he is worth 19.6 billion USD.
Holding Up a Mirror: Reflections on St. Anthony Park
By Helen Warren, chair, St. Anthony Park Bugle Board of Directors “Why didn’t you ask us first?” That’s the question neighbors posed when they learned about Luther Seminary’s recent plan to convert Stub Hall to an emergency shelter for people without a home. The opposition to the plan took shape quickly. Some neighbors mounted legal arguments, citing zoning ordinances and case law.
Andy Boss: A catalyst for community in St. Anthony Park
By Helen Warren News commentary Exactly 50 years ago, in July of 1974, the first issue of the Park Bugle was published. The gestation of our community newspaper hasn’t been fully documented. But you can piece together the story. Community leaders wanted to share news, announce events, record the actions of civic, educational and religious organizations and profile neighborhood residents. Local businesses also wanted to advertise goods and services to customers.

Some words about your editor
By Helen Warren A half century, 50 years, is more than half a human lifetime. Besides living and breathing, most of us fill our time on earth with a craft or career. We keep doing what we do because we know how to do it and because it pays the bills. If we are lucky, it also brings a sense of achievement or pleasure that keep us going. Recently, the Minnesota Newspaper Association inducted Park Bugle editor Scott Carlson into its Half Century Club.
Guest Editorial: The new fiscal year for the Bugle
By Helen Warren Greetings from the Park Bugle board of directors. I’m Helen Warren, the presiding officer of the board for our 2023-24 fiscal year. My journey to my current volunteer post is one that begins some 20 years ago. I’ve been a Park Bugle reader since before I became a permanent resident of St. Anthony Park in 2005. I moved to St. Paul from Iowa in 2002 to take a job as a grant writer at Macalester College. My rental house in South St. Paul wasn’t available when I started my job.
Reflections on a tragedy close to home
By Helen Warren I live 3½ blocks away from where Michael Brasel was shot and killed on Saturday morning in front of his St. Anthony Park home on Chilcombe Avenue. On the morning after he died, I turned my sheepdog Malone toward Chilcombe, a route we seldom take on our morning walks. It wasn’t curiosity that drew me. I needed to go there because the assault altered my equilibrium, my sense of my surroundings.
Our neighbors by the numbers
By Helen Warren I drive by them nearly every day: The new apartment buildings in south St. Anthony Park along or near University Avenue. By rough estimate, 700 apartments, mostly studio or one-bedroom, have opened since 2020. What might I have in common with these new residents? In what sense might they become my neighbors? My neighbors along Commonwealth Avenue in north St. Anthony Park are familiar to me. Some have been my neighbors since 2005 when I moved in.
Missing Micawber’s bookstore
By Helen B. Warren I joined the capacity crowd at St. Anthony Park UCC on Sunday, May 19th to witness words spoken over the departure of Micawber’s from St. Anthony Park. It was a wonderful gathering, full of music, spoken words and tender remembrances for Micawber’s owners and staff. I was delighted by Melvin Carter’s proclamation designating that day as Tom Bielenburg Day in St. Paul. The gathering renewed my devotion to reading and writing.

Opinion editor's note: Star Tribune Opinion publishes a mix of national and local commentaries online and in print each day. I had such a conversation recently with a stranger, a man I'll call DeShawn because I don't know his name. DeShawn watched from the sidewalk as I parked my car in a narrow space between two cars. Parallel parking is a challenge I accept with gritted teeth.
Justice-focused poetry allows for self-reflection
A liberal arts education holds multiple opportunities beyond the classroom. Students, faculty and staff at St. Olaf can engage with visiting luminaries who offer intellectual and artistic enrichment. Seeing a renowned or rising star can awaken in all of us a call to possibilities beyond particular disciplines or fields of study. I took advantage of one such opportunity on Oct. 29 when St. Olaf hosted the poet Justin Phillip Reed.
