DOJ Should Prosecute Election Deniers Who Refuse to Certify Midterm Election Results
This piece was originally published on Just Security, an online forum for analysis of U.S. national security law and policy. As Election Day approaches, so does the prospect of certain state or local officials “going rogue” and attempting to refuse to certify election results based on election conspiracies or other specious grounds. Conservatives Are Begging the Supreme Court Not to Take Us Into an Elections Abyss
This piece was originally published on Just Security, an online forum for analysis of U.S. national security law and policy. As briefing nears its close, the battle lines are emerging in Moore v. Harper—the case in which the Supreme Court will consider whether to adopt some form of the independent state legislature theory. As a refresher, the ISL theory contends that state legislatures may regulate federal elections free of any checks by other state-level actors.

Independent State Legislatures and Presidential Elections: Addressing Misconceptions About Current Law and Prospects for Reform
During the recent Senate Rules Committee hearing on Electoral Count Act reform, Senator Angus King (I-ME) asked a question that seems to be on many minds: What is the independent state legislature theory and how would it impact the casting and counting of electoral votes under the Electoral Count Act? The bipartisan panel of experts was clear in response.
The Independent State Legislature Theory Should Horrify Supreme Court’s Originalists
This morning, the Supreme Court decided to hear Moore v. Harper, a challenge to the congressional maps in North Carolina that has the potential to upend over 200 years of election law. In Moore, members of the state legislature are urging the Supreme Court to reinstate the map they drew – and that North Carolina courts struck down as unconstitutional and redrew – using what is known as the “independent state legislature” theory (or ISL).
Stonewall take another hostage
At Fair Cop we spent 18 months helping to reveal Stonewall’s pernicious influence on public life. Last Tuesday, Ofcom’s chief executive, Melanie Dawes, managed it in a sentence. Pink News, the blog that breaks important stories about how everyone is a bigot, homophobe and transphobe, gleefully reported Ms Dawes’ appearance before the Digital, Culture, Media & Sport Committee.

Spellcheck won’t save you
Spellcheck won’t save you There are two common responses when I tell people I’m a freelance proofreader and copy-editor: ‘Oh, I’d be good at that; I always notice spelling mistakes’ or ‘Can’t you just run spellcheck?’ While the latter is the most eye-roll inducing, both are based on a misconception of what a proofreader or editor does all day. Spelling is undoubtedly an essential skill for an editorial professional and the most familiar part of our job to many people.

Swindle Still On Top At Angler Of The Year At Mille Lacs Bassmaster Championship - Light and Champion: Sports
On Thursday, the Top 50 qualifiers from the Bassmaster Elite Series produced 23 limits exceeding the 20-pound mark. Today’s field did one better by bringing 24 limits to the scales exceeding 20 pounds. While that’s an impressive turnout yet again, the angler who catches the heaviest three-day limit of bass does not win this tournament; rather points are the key to victory this week.

Swindle Maintains Lead In Toyota Bassmaster Angler Of The Year Race - Light and Champion: Sports
Twenty-three anglers crested the 20-pound mark with their individual five-fish daily limits. While that’s very impressive, this tournament isn’t won by the heaviest three-day total. Rather, it’s all about crowning the best angler of the 2016 season. Gerald Swindle of Warrior, Ala., came to Mille Lacs with a 43-point lead over Keith Combs of Huntington, Texas. Swindle didn’t have to do much coming into this tournament to lock up the AOY title.
