What was your first job as a journalist?

Have you ever used a typewriter?
No, but when I go back to Ethiopia next, I am bringing back my grandfather's typewriter which I am allowed to keep.

Peter Parker
Why did you become a journalist?
Because I love to tell stories and reading and writing stories helped me learn English as a first-gen Ethiopian American kid.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I worked for The Jesuit Crusader, primarily writing for the features and lifestyle sections, but I have designed every section at least once.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Always stay humble & inspired and read your favorite kind of journalism every day.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
Hip-hop and rap music is trash and there is nothing more to glean from a genre of music full of expletives and misogynistic language.
