Written by Christine Fellingham & Tawana Bain Anyone who knows me– even just a little bit– knows this to be true: “Sisterhood” is not just a word for me. It’s a way of life. I unapologetically surround myself with strong, supportive women who live authentically, show up consistently and are willing to step up and be not just sounding boards but real allies when life gets challenging. There’s no age, race, sexual persuasion that defines these women. It’s authenticity and chemistry.

Two Women to Watch in our Foodie Scene

Fortunately, our local restaurant scene is becoming an exception — thanks to the tireless work of talented women and, in part, to the opportunity provided by the Lee Initiative’s Women Culinary and Spirits program. Here are two recent Initiative grads and rising stars who are adding a new flavor to our foodie culture.

The Keys to Finding Love at Any Age
Q: You say that we can have our best sex after 50. But how is this possible? A: I don't mean movie sex! I mean the most intimate, collaborative sex of your life. You and your partner work together. You talk more. You tell each other what you can do and can't do. It's more vulnerable, more intimate and more caring. Younger sex is performative; it's not necessarily an intimate act. But it's incredible the kind of sensations you can have if you explore each other's bodies.
New Houseguest Rules for Post Pandemic Events
Pitch in … but sanitize first. As tempting as it may be after a year of doing everything for yourself, this is not the time to sit back and let your host wait on you. Offer to make or buy a meal, do the dishes, help with food prep. “But make sure they’re OK with the help you’re offering first, and even let them see you scrubbing up,” Barbee suggests. Don’t be clingy. No matter how thrilled you are to reunite, give your host some space.
Teen girls with autism face 'unique challenges.' This new Freefrom show tells their stories
When our youngest daughter hit middle school and simultaneously received an autism diagnosis, I found that I had to toss the rule book and rethink almost every mom-skill I thought I had mastered. And that’s nothing compared to the learning curve she’d been thrown. If the teen years are potentially rocky for any girl, they can be a minefield for a girl with autism.
Her Scene | Behind-the-scenes style tricks
For those of you who've never set foot on a fashion shoot, I can describe the experience like this: Each shoot is a weird little bubble in which a group of people live for eight to 12 hours. While on the shoot, everyone involved has to buy into the same creative vision, no matter how bizarre, and conjure up outfits, beauty looks and images to support it. Sometimes, we take ourselves and — hopefully — our readers to places we didn't even know we could go.

Louisville designer Frances Lewis fits, flatters all women
When Frances Lewis looks at a plus-sized woman, she doesn’t see figure problems. She sees potential. “There’s a misconception that smaller models are easier to dress,” said the local designer/entrepreneur behind the Ann DeEvelyn collection, a line of clothing for women sized 0 to 22 and up. “They’re not.
Designer Terminal brings fashion to Portland
An abandoned warehouse in Portland may become the epicenter of Louisville fashion. At least, that's what developer Gill Holland and industrial designer turned visionary Yamilca Rodriguez intend. Stepping into the vast but ramshackle space at the end of 1403 Rowan St., it may be hard to see it as what Rodriguez called "a makers' space - with design studios, sewing machines, retail space and small run manufacturing." Until you walk into this blank space when some of our local designers are there.

Your guide to fall's crazy-flattering jeans
For many women (myself included), shopping for jeans is a chore that ranks right up there with trying on swimsuits. There’s more fabric involved, yes, but the inconsistent sizing, variety of styles and the sheer number of variables involved in getting the right fit can quickly make a mountain of rejects out of a pile of possibilities.? The wrong jeans have the uncanny ability to make your butt look flat, your thighs look huge and your hips look alarmingly enlarged.

From the streets to the runway, we love sneakers
You don’t have to be a parent on the receiving end of fervent pleas for $200 Nikes, Pumas or fill-in-the-blanks to know that, for most young shoppers, sneakers are more than sturdy, practical footwear for PE class and school sports. They’re a lifestyle choice … a statement about their identity … an essential building block of personal style.

Once upon a time, your lucky logo sweatshirt was standard game day wear. Not anymore. Look around you at any Cards game or UK viewing party and you’ll see red leather jackets, royal blue statement necklaces, red plaid Burberry bags. There are sweatshirts, sure. But not as many as you might expect.

Tailgating tips & tricks for fall entertaining
In this city of foodies and bourbon enthusiasts, tailgating tends to be elevated beyond the buckets of chicken and bowls of chips. And many expert tailgaters often break out their best new recipes on game day - creating as much excitement about the menu as there is about the score. Invitations to tailgate with those who do it well are coveted, and these can't-miss occasions leave people raving about food and drink (and, oh yeah, that game) for days afterward.
Fall trend try-on tips from HerScene Magazine
Trying fall’s new looks on models is creative bliss, but slipping them onto grown up women with busy lives and wardrobe needs is the real litmus test of the latest trends. It’s those shopping excursions with real women that tell me everything I need to know: which trends are universally flattering, which are miserably uncomfortable, which will meld seamlessly into existing wardrobes and lifestyles.

CJ's midway makeovers thrill fairgoers
There we were on Wednesday, setting up our power cords, heated appliances and makeup brushes on a card table next to Freddy Farm Bureau while a highly energized crowd of potential makeover candidates stood in the wilting humidity, waiting for their shot at on-the-spot image upgrades. Before placing anyone in the chairs, Kirby and I speed-walked our way past the corn dog and kettle corn vendors in search of additional candidates and, of course, full immersion in the fair experience.

Putting personal spin on back-to-school fashion
The first day of school for most around here is either about two weeks away or it already happened. And that means, if you have school-age children, you've already begun your back-to-school shopping. Fifty-one percent of back-to-school shoppers are starting earlier this year, according to research by the National Retail Federation, a good three weeks to a month before the first day. A lot of that big push, according to local store owners, is focused on the first-day look.

But then there's the question of: How? Making the decision that it's time to stop is only step one. Getting to that natural state is likely to take a few more.
