A study into the risk of serious infections in people with hidradenitis suppurativa
Summary Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), or acne inversa, is a chronic skin disease that affects between 0.3 and 4.0% of the global population. HS often affects skin folds of the body, such as the armpits and groin, and can cause significant inflammation, pain, itch, scarring, and disfigurement. The study researchers are based in the USA.
Association between HS and hospitalization for psychiatric disorders
Summary Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic disease that causes painful, swollen, fluid and pus‐filled lumps on the skin. Hidradenitis affects between 0.3 to 4.0% of the population worldwide. The researchers of this study are based in U.S.A. They aimed to find out if hidradenitis is linked with higher likelihood and costs of mental health disorders. They examined the National Inpatient Sample, a nationwide database of hospitalizations in the U.S.A., between the years 2002 to 2012.

Association between hidradenitis suppurativa and hospitalization for psychiatric disorders: A cross‐sectional analysis of the National Inpatient Sample - Patel - - British Journal of Dermatology - Wiley Online Library
Background Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is associated with pain, disfigurement, psychosocial distress and poor quality of life, all of which may lead to higher likelihood of mental health (MH) disorders. However, little is known about the MH comorbidities of HS. Objectives to determine the MH disorders and cost‐burden associated with HS.
