Hlengani Mathebula | Zuma and Trump leverage deceptive tactics in bid to win public support
VOICES Whatever you may think of former president Jacob Zuma and his antics, his comeback to the centre of the country’s politics holds a mirror up to all South Africans, showing us how far down the abyss this country is going. That is because his political resurgence is fuelled by the failure of the ANC administration to stop and reverse the country’s socioeconomic decline. Everywhere you look, things are falling apart.

Of ostriches and flamingos: Road to perdition
But our leaders, who in recent years have been of the variety that can only be described as the “none so blind as those who will not see”, went for the road that should never have been taken. Photo: Arishad Satter/Gallo Images /Getty Images VOICES But South Africa did take that road and is suffering the consequences. The country veered off course – some would say it was driven deliberately off the road – on to the wrong path. Get 14 days free to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism.
Load-shedding: our leaders go for the Pontius Pilate approach
When Minister of Public Service and Administration Zola Skweyiya launched the white paper on the transformation of the public service in October 1997, he said that he wanted the needs of South Africans “to come first”. He added he also wanted SA citizens, especially those who had experienced the harshest of the apartheid machinery, to view and experience the public service in an entirely new way. Hence, Nelson Mandela’s government named the policy Batho Pele — people first.
The invisibility of black professionals Original
Ralph Ellison, one of America’s finest novelists, wrote about invisibility — that instance when the people with whom you inhabit a geographic space choose not to see you, or when they do, they only see you through their eyes of prejudice. “I am a man of substance, of flesh and bone, fibre, and liquids — and I might even be said to possess a mind. I am invisible, understand, simply because people refuse to see me.
Freedom Day – The Mail & Guardian
Why Steve Biko still matters The founder of Black Consciousness kept evolving; by the time of his terrible death he was moving away from hard-line racial isolationism.
Hlengani Mathebula | What the Nehawu and EFF protests mean for the ANC | City Press
EFF president Julius Malema was joined by Carl Niehaus and Jimmy Manyi during the red berets’ march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria this week. VOICES One incident was the roughing up of a doctor by National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) members during her visit to a clinic in Bushbuckridge in Mpumalanga, one of the most cruel acts during the union’s recent strike. The second was a callous comment attributed to Nehawu’s Western Cape provincial secretary, Baxolise Mali.
Hlengani Mathebula | Cyril's cabinet reduction mirage | City Press
Instead of reducing cabinet, Cyril Ramaphosa may even have to increase minister posts if the ANC wins elections in 2024. Photo: Archive VOICES Don’t bank on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s promise to shrink the size of government after next year’s elections. My assertion is based on two reasons. Our artless government needs to rediscover the value of cultural diplomacy
Our artless government needs to rediscover the value of cultural diplomacy 25 September 2022 - 00:00 By Hlengani Mathebula American pianist and composer Kenny Werner says that artists combine language and technology to “say something”. “They express something from very deep in their soul, or their deepest thoughts, political statements, love of homeland, love of self and of others, or just something that needs to be said! Maybe they’re just having fun.”..
Hlengani Mathebula | Greylisting: Let's avoid America's big bite
The FATF has warned South Africa that it faces greylisting. Photo: Supplied VOICES A recurring theme in Ben Bernanke’s memoir about the 2008 global financial crisis and its aftermath is confidence – both among consumers and investors. Bernanke was chair of the US Federal Reserve when the financial crisis began and he had to lead the management of its aftermath. Bernanke’s emphasis is well placed because confidence is, after all, the beginning and end of any financial system.
Hlengani Mathebula | We need a more nuanced conversation about healthcare | Citypress

Dear Cde Paul Mashatile, Revolutionary greetings I write as a member of our movement in good standing. My branch is the General Ike Maphoto Branch, Polokwane. I have been a cadre for decades, dating back to when our movement was banned in South Africa. In addition, I have equally been a member, in good standing, of the SA Communist Party. As a loyal and committed cadre, I’m driven to write to you today because of the serious economic crisis facing our country.
Hlengani Mathebula | SAA: A good deal communicated poorly

Hlengani Mathebula | How to save the Post Office from itself
Subscribers can listen to this article The SA Post Office is in desperate need of key policy shifts to become a viable enterprise again VOICES If the SA Post Office is to live up to Communications and Digital Technologies Minister Khumbudzo Ntshavheni’s promise of becoming an e-commerce hub for South Africa and the continent by 2024, the state-owned enterprise (SOE) must implement its turnaround plan far more aggressively than the ambition outlined in its current corporate plan.
SA’s economic links to the global system pose foreign policy constraints
The country must strike a careful balance between its political views and what is in the best interest of its economic and financial systems. South Africa is a small economy that is well plugged into the global economic and financial systems from which it draws sustenance. This umbilical cord has its downside too, because it is a transmitter of problems such as the effects of the global financial crisis. But the other risk relates to South Africa’s foreign policy.
Jacob Zuma: The Samson of Nkandla
Zuma’s penchant for flouting the law has always been aided by the ANC, which he now threatens to take down with him VOICES Samson, a man of enormous strength, broke his religious obligations, lost his strength and was enslaved by the Philistines. How to build a strong SABC
0:00 Subscribers can listen to this article The SABC building in Auckland Park in Johannesburg, South Africa. Veli Nhlapo VOICES There are a few critical steps government could take to secure the future of the SABC. The first deals with the corporation’s governance and accountability. Its accountability should primarily be to the people of South Africa. The second relates to the SABC’s independence from political and commercial interests.
For every corrupt politician, there is a businessperson willing to grease their palm
VOICES Business must also call out the graft within its own ranks if SA is to be fixed, argues Hlengani Mathebula Leaders of business in South Africa should take to heart the grandmotherly wisdom that, when you wag your finger at someone, you also have three pointing back at you. So, when they have some tough words for government about corruption, they should bear in mind that none of it happens without one of their own aiding and abetting a politician and civil servant.
ANC and business must find common ground now
VOICES South Africa has three proposals on the table for pulling the country back from the economic abyss. The first is the framework put together by the ANC’s Economic Transformation Committee and the second was tabled by Business for South Africa (B4SA). There is also the third proposal that was steered by National Treasury last year and which I have previously written about. Both ANC’s and B4SA’s proposals cover pretty much the same ground. They are, however, anchored in two different approaches.
We need value for money from costly inquiries
Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo has a moment of mirth during a sitting of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture. Picture: Thulani Mbele / Sowetan / Gallo Images VOICES Processes that drain the public purse can ill afford to function on a wing and a prayer Public inquiries, including commissions, can be a transparent and independent tool for investigating some of the tragic, complex, politically contested and controversial issues in society.
Will Covid-19 transform SA’s economy?
VOICES South Africa’s political economy, that big bedroom where politics and the economy meet, has its own version of the coleslaw that, among black people, is popularly known as “John 14”. The salad earned its nickname because it was, and may still be, as much a regular feature of black people’s gatherings as John 14 is the most commonly quoted biblical verse at church gatherings.
