Ireland still isn't doing enough to tackle violence against women
TODAY MARKS INTERNATIONAL Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. It is a fitting time for the government to face some uncomfortable truths about one of society’s most prevalent and pervasive human rights violations. Frustratingly, there only seems to be a political focus on this issue when high profile cases of violence against women – ranging from sexual assaults and coercive control to psychological abuse and murder – are highlighted in the media.
When it comes to abuse of women, we keep saying 'never again', then nothing
TOO OFTEN, IT takes women speaking out about their own trauma and experience of domestic, sexual and gender-based violence before the Government or institutions of the State take any action. The latest scandal to engulf the Football Association of Ireland is just one example of this. At times, it was difficult to watch the harrowing RTÉ Investigates documentary as it revealed details of allegations of historic abuse, dating back to the 1990s, by young women players against FAI coaches.
Holly Cairns: Ireland has long advocated for the Palestinians
WHAT FURTHER EVIDENCE does the Irish Government need to convince it there is a genocide taking place in Gaza? The scale of the carnage in Gaza is unprecedented in recent history. In just over 100 days, almost 100,000 Palestinians have been killed, reported missing or wounded. More than 25,000 people have now been confirmed dead, 10,000 of whom are children.
Holly Cairns: What Israel is doing in Gaza is beyond horrific
THE CARNAGE IN Gaza is a humanitarian catastrophe and the moral authority of Western nations has been exposed as a sham. As I write, the death toll in Gaza has exceeded 11,000. By the time you read this, it will likely be much higher. Among this number are more than 5,000 children who have died excruciating deaths – they have been incinerated by Israeli missiles, crushed by falling debris or buried alive under mountains of rubble.

Holly Cairns: Calculating redress based on length of time in an institution is just wrong
UNLESS SIGNFICANTLY AMENDED, the Government’s proposed Mother and Baby Institutions Payment Scheme looks set to be as flawed as the Commission of Investigation report that preceded it. The overdue redress scheme, signed off by Cabinet last week, is expected to cost €800 million and will be open to around 34,000 survivors of mother and baby institutions and county homes. But financial compensation should be just one element of any survivor-centred redress scheme.

Poll: Should the government serve its full term? LAST NIGHT WAS significant one in the lifetime of the FF-FG-Green coalition government. With Fine Gael’s Joe McHugh voting against the government and losing the party whip, the number of TDs on the government benches has dropped to 79. The government may still be able to pass legislation but things have got a bit tighter.
Holly Cairns: Government must not forget disabled people in this cost of living crisis
EVERY DAY BRINGS a new grim milestone in the cost-of-living crisis. Inflation is now at nearly 10pc – driven by soaring energy, housing, food and fuel costs. Last week, a report from the Parliamentary Budget Office found that pensions have fallen in value by €12 per week, and more than €1,000 has been wiped from average workers’ pay packets, because of the inflationary spiral since last year.

Poll: Do you think Boris Johnson will resign? IT WAS A tumultuous night for UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson as he received resignations from Cabinet ministers and other Conservative MPs. Former Brexit secretary David Frost called on Johnson to resign as prime minister before he takes the party and the government “down with him”. It’s not the first time that there have been calls for Johnson to resign.

Poll: Will you limit indoor visits to three other households at a time for the next while? THE GOVERNMENT HAS announced several new restrictions aimed to reduce Covid-19 risks heading into the Christmas period. As part of the measures from 7 December to 9 January, nightclubs will close, certain events will be limited to 50% capacity and visits to private homes are advised to be limited to a maximum of three other households (so four households in total).
Holly Cairns: Successive governments have neglected Ireland's disabled people - we must do better
TODAY IS INTERNATIONAL Day of Persons With Disabilities, an occasion on which we are urged to promote the rights and well-being of disabled people. This advocacy is especially important in this country, where the rights of disabled people are continually ignored, undermined and, oftentimes, fully erased. The evidence, for our shameful treatment of people with disabilities, can be found wherever you care to look. Supply of basic services First, let’s examine transport.

Poll: Should the number of people allowed attend funerals be increased after 5 April? THE IRISH TIMES has reported that Catholic bishops are urging church members to lobby their TDs over Covid-related restrictions on Masses and funerals. Holly Cairns: The gender pay gap is a scandal - we must resolve to end it
THE REMOVAL OF the marriage bar was a defining moment in the working lives of my mother’s generation. It was the practice whereby women employed in the civil service and many other sectors were prevented from working after they got married. The marriage bar was in place from the early 1930s to 1973. It was a manifestation of a deeply misogynistic society and was put into action by a state which failed women in so many ways.

Poll: Should the Government end funding for greyhound racing? THE GREYHOUND RACING industry has been put in the spotlight again this week, the Social Democrats put forward a motion proposing to end State funding of the sector. Writing for TheJournal.ie this week, TD Holly Cairns explained that greyhound racing in Ireland will receive €19.2m in public funding next year – an increase of €2.4m on 2020.
Holly Cairns: The greyhound industry is inherently cruel - so why should the taxpayer fund it?
IN THE SPACE of two days last week, the Government took a somewhat contradictory approach to animal welfare in this country. On one hand, the Taoiseach pledged State support for Dublin Zoo and Fota Wildlife Park, both of which are facing an urgent financial crisis due to Covid-19 restrictions. At the same time, the Government was pushing through a motion, without debate, to increase funding for an industry where serious animal welfare issues have been exposed and continue to cause concern.
