Interview

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Of course. And thanks to the fact that I learned on an old manual typewriter, I am very accurate (it's too painful to retype a whole page!).

How is social media changing news?

It provides a platform for many perspectives around the world. News - factual and inaccurate - travels at light speed.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Are there any real ones left?

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

With passion and honesty.

What's your favorite social network?

Facebook, because it's like the modern-day Arc de Triomphe - sit there long enough, you'll eventually encounter everyone you've ever known.

Who do you wish followed you?

Readers; parents and grandparents of young readers; teachers; librarians; fun people who want to engage in conversation.

Why did you become a journalist?

I'm really not a journalist. I just play one on my blog - sometimes. I'm an author and a blogger and a full time CXP.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Be uncompromisingly honest; dig deep; be trustworthy and thought-provoking; allow readers/viewers to form informed, fact-based opinions.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Depends on how far, how hard, and how fast... not till after coffee.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

A law student wanted me to ghost write his autobiography. I stole his Tom Lehrer mix tape in payment for a wasted afternoon. LOVE Lehrer.

What's your favorite drink?

Strong black coffee. Sometimes laced with water, sometimes with whiskey.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

In bed. Reading. Or maybe dead.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

NPR's website
