Howard Appel’s Biography

Howard Appel is a highly accomplished investment banker and entrepreneur, with a career spanning over three decades marked by innovation, strategic leadership, and philanthropic dedication. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1960, Howard grew up in Swampscott, Massachusetts, where he laid the foundation for his academic and professional success. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from the University of Massachusetts in 1981 and later pursued a joint JD-MBA degree at the University of Pennsylvania Law School and Wharton Graduate School of Business, completing the rigorous program in 1986.

Early in his career, Howard founded Bailey, Martin & Appel, a brokerage firm in Philadelphia. In 1989, he transitioned into investment banking by establishing HMA Investments, where he played a critical role in financing and taking over fifty companies public. Among his most celebrated successes are Education Lending Group, which achieved a 20:1 return for its early investors after being sold to CIT Finance, and Coastal Energy, which grew to a $2.3 billion valuation before its sale to CEPSA. His expertise in capital markets, financial structuring, and business development has cemented his reputation as a dynamic force in the industry.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Howard Appel has made a profound impact through philanthropy. He recently financed the Chabad of Fairmount in Philadelphia, a vibrant community center dedicated to the memory of his late son, Stephen. This center includes Stephen’s Café, a preschool, educational facilities, and a synagogue, reflecting Howard’s deep commitment to education, community building, and faith. Throughout his career, he has consistently leveraged his success to give back, embodying the principle that true leadership extends beyond business achievements into meaningful contributions to society.
