How GLP-1 Weight‑Loss Drugs Are Changing Restaurant Menus in 2026–27 By late 2026, the restaurant industry has entered a new era shaped not by a fad diet or fleeting wellness craze, but by a pharmaceutical revolution. How a Restaurant Manager Should Deal With an Irate Customer
How a Restaurant Manager Should Deal With an Irate Customer In the restaurant world, few moments test a manager’s leadership more than dealing with an irate customer. The dining room is a stage, and when a guest becomes visibly upset, the entire environment feels the tension. Other customers notice, staff become anxious, and the situation can escalate quickly if not handled with skill.
New Feature – The Today’s Restaurant News Forum
New Feature – The Today’s Restaurant News Forum I recently watched a documentary about Hugh Hefner, the founder and publisher of Playboy Magazine. It was fascinating because, in many ways, I encountered similar start‑up challenges when launching Today’s Restaurant—though, of course, without the girls. Hefner’s story is a reminder that great ideas often begin with determination, creativity, and a few dollars left in the bank.
The History of the Iconic Diner
The history of the iconic diner is a testament to American culinary culture and social interaction. Originating in the early 20th century, diners became popular for their unique architecture and diverse menus, catering to a wide range of tastes. These establishments not only provided sustenance but also served as communal hubs where patrons could gather, share stories, and enjoy a sense of belonging.
The Restaurant Operation of 2030: A New Era of Intelligent Hospitality
The Restaurant Operation of 2030: A New Era of Intelligent Hospitality By 2030, the restaurant industry will look and operate very differently from the one we know today. The changes won’t arrive in one dramatic wave; instead, they will unfold through thousands of small, interconnected innovations that gradually reshape how restaurants cook, serve, manage, and grow.
How a Restaurant Manager Should Deal With a Difficult Employee
How a Restaurant Manager Should Deal With a Difficult Employee Running a restaurant means managing constant motion—orders flying in, customers with expectations, staff juggling ten things at once, and the pressure of margins that never seem wide enough. In that environment, a difficult employee isn’t just an inconvenience. They’re a threat to service quality, team morale, and ultimately revenue. Handling them correctly requires a balance of leadership, clarity, and decisiveness.

1 Minute Read How Mouth Watering Italian Cuisine Was Able To Influence My Life By Howard Appell, Publisher If it wasn’t for Italian Cuisine I don’t think I would have had so many fond memories of growing up in my neighborhoods. From the coffee grinder on 5th Ave in Brooklyn New York, the block where my grandfather had his business, to the new pizzeria that opened down the street, the sights and smells of Italian food are engraved in my memory.

Amazing Look Back to the Future
Appell Pie June 2004/September 2021 Amazing look back to the future Sometimes I like to go back and read my columns from the early 2000’s to see what has changed in the restaurant/world. This column is almost comical in some spots but still relevant in others. I hope you enjoy it. Many months ago I wrote about how the high price of gasoline would effect business. Now as we approach a National average of over $2.00 per gallon we must prepare for a much different business environment.

Peel back the layers for answers
Appell Pie Peel back the layers for answers I’m sure all of us have seen a cross section of a rock or a soil sample, which shows layers representing time and history. Effective problem solving requires you to understand that the solution may be in the past. Knowledge of the past gives you a means to understand the way things are now and gives you the means to solve the problem now.
Appell Pie September 2020
Appell Pie September 2020 What are you doing? The beginning of September marks the sixth month of the “lockdown” caused by the COVID19 Pandemic. I find myself doing things now that was not in my normal routine before the virus. My sleep pattern has been altered as some days I wake up at four or five in the morning and can’t go back to sleep because like all people who own, operate or manage a business I review the list of things I need to do the following day.
Baseball and the Changing World
Appell Pie August 2020 Baseball and the Changing World Captains Log March 7, 2020. It seems like five years but alas it was only five months since that beautiful spring day in Port St. Lucie with thousands of New York Mets fans awaiting the start of the game and the regular season just a month away. News of a pandemic was just starting to hit the news reports while masks and social distancing were not even thought of yet in the United States, but it was on the horizon of our consciousness.
Appell Pie - Ask
Appell Pie July 2020 Ask The world is in a state of turmoil. We are dealing with the Pandemic and social upheaval. Our news media spends 24/7 covering it from all angles and political positions. I for one am tired of it as I sit in front of my computer wearing a mask for the greater good. Lol. I don’t want to add any more coverage of these situations so I am writing this column on a totally different subject, Ask.
Memorial Day - Today's Restaurant
Appell Pie May 2020 Memorial Day May is a month of great importance to me, it’s my birthday month. I was born on May 30th the actual day that Memorial Day actually used to be celebrated on. I lived in Brooklyn New York and every year my parents would take me to the Memorial Day Parade on Eastern Parkway and tell me the parade was for me. I thought it was great to have my very own parade with tanks, jeeps and trucks all slowly moving past me.
Beam Me Up Scotty

Debunking 5 Cyber Security Myths for Restaurateurs
Debunking 5 Cyber Security Myths for Restaurateurs By Karen Samuels, Hub International Florida Restaurants are often underinsured when it comes to cyber risk. Restaurants collect and store a tremendous amount of personal data – of both their patrons (think: credit card numbers, frequent guest programs) and staff. With greater risk comes additional coverage needs. This can be exacerbated when restaurants are owned or managed by third-party franchisees.

Use the Principle of Reciprocity to Grow Your Business Faster
Use the Principle of Reciprocity to Grow Your Business Faster By Ashlee Brayfield People feel an obligation to do something for you when you’ve done something for them. This is known as the principle of reciprocity. You’re more likely to buy a gift for someone who bought one for you. You’re more likely to invite someone to your wedding if they invited you to theirs. You’re more likely to buy something if the seller gives you something for free.

To Advertise or Not? Yes, of Course It seems like the world is speeding out of control to an unknown destination. Our culture has taken a jag in the direction many of us thought we were going. Remember back in 2008 as the economy took a nose dive and millions of people were looking for jobs and money to keep their lives on track? I think that 2008 was a pivotal year for our business and personal culture. As the economy continued to slide the internet started to gain momentum.

I remember going to La Guardia Airport in New York on a hot summer day in the late eighties carrying my crying five year old son up to our departure gate and trying to comfort him and tell him everything was going to be OK. He was too young to realize that his parents had made the decision to move to Florida and start their life over in a new land. He only knew he would miss his friends and family.

Attention Sales Managers and Presidents
I have had an idea twirling around in my head for many years. It just never seemed to be the right time to act on it as the daily activities of guiding Today's Restaurant was all consuming. I've been in this industry a long time and have trained many people to sell equipment, services, advertising and some supplies but there was never a school to send them for formal Sales Training in this industry, until now.
