Scot Cherry. Mike Hynson, the surfer from Bruce Brown’s movie The Endless Summer, said, “Are you Scot Cherry? I understand if I have a problem around here I should come to you.” Wave Gangsters Socially, Van Artsdalen became a marked man. His reputation as a brawler traveled beyond the predominantly white population of La Jolla to tougher neighborhoods. Butch had already proved himself among the few black people living in La Jolla by playing sports with them at the La Jolla Recreation Center.

Notes from Underground San Diego's Free Press (later renamed the Street Journal) was defunct by the end of 1970; the San Diego Door came and went with the Nixon Presidency, 1968 to August 1974.The O.B. Rag fell silent in September 1975, after reporting the pullout of all U.S. forces from Vietnam. But while they lasted, these so-called underground papers made a dent in the city's political ironsides. By Neal Matthews, Nov.

An Observation as I Move On - Classical KDFC
After announcing my retirement, someone asked me to describe the last few weeks on the air as I wind up an amazing career. “Weird and wonderful” came to mind. Weird because I never took stock of how many people are listening and wonderful because I have been afforded the chance to control the beginning and end of my professional life. That is amazing to me as so many of my talented co-workers over the years were simply asked to go home, for good, when they reached a certain age.
New Tech Rescues Those Challenged by Terpsichore - Classical KDFC
I was sent to dancing class in grade school. We were raised by a mom from a bygone time where knowing how to move on the dance floor helped create a well-rounded boy or girl. I eventually mastered the waltz and fox trot and other ballroom dances (all since forgotten, sorry mom). Later I was introduced to the hustle and electric slide but found I could never remember the moves. Matching dance moves to the beat is a not uncommon challenge for aspiring dancers.

Are You Fit as a Fiddle - Classical KDFC
Does music make you want to move, or stop everything and listen? I suppose it depends on what music you’re listening to. How about Beethoven’s 5th? On August 5th the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra gave folks a chance to sit or move at an outdoor concert in Covington. You could run a 5k which kicked off with the famous opening notes of the famous 5th, or you could sit on the lawn and enjoy every note.

Wave Gangsters: Windansea's Violent Legacy Fades Away
Even if you live and surf in La Jolla doesn’t mean you’re welcome at Windansea. “This is one of the last places in San Diego with a visible and well-known reputation for localism,” says 17-year-old native surfer Joe Aguirre. “But they say it’s not what it used to be.” One of the younger members of the Windansea Surf Club, Aguirre has only heard about the “good old days,” when the parking lot along Neptune Place at the foot of Nautilus Street was the domain of a closed society.
Cocktails with the Coloratura? - Classical KUSC
It’s been announced that San Francisco Opera is experimenting with a new beverage policy: drinks will be allowed in the hall. According to their website “drinks must be [an] approved compostable cup with lid, available at all bars in the War Memorial Opera House.” From some, this is simply groundbreaking, though it’s not exactly a novel idea. Many venues in England have allowed plastic drink cups in the auditorium for years.
