Michigan Wolverines 2025 Football Preview
Photo by Justin Casterline/Getty Images After suffering through a decade of Ohio State’s dominance on the football field, the 2020’s have been a Michigan fan’s dream. Three Big Ten titles and a national championship have a way of resetting your perspective. Of course, a bevy of NCAA violations that occurred under former head coach Jim Harbaugh cloud those trophies to all — except Michigan fans, of course.
Akron Zips 2025 Football Preview
The last time Husker fans saw the Akron Zips, they were heading to the airport in the middle of an epic squall line of thunderstorms that wiped out Nebraska’s 2018 season opener. Immediately after kickoff, the first bolts of lightning hit near downtown Lincoln, and Mother Nature didn’t relent for nearly nine hours, until well after 3 am Sunday morning.
Cincinnati Bearcats 2025 Football Preview Original
Photo by Dylan Buell/Getty Images Season openers are always a bit of a challenge, as what might look like a good (or bad) team on paper might turn out to be just the opposite when games actually kick off. And now in the transfer portal era with so many players switching teams, it’s even more of a challenge. How do these new players fit into another program? Are teams upgrading talent or inheriting issues that led players to leave their previous team.
College Football Playoff Roundtable
Kirby Lee-Imagn Images Now that we’ve had a little time to reflect, it’s time for the CornNation team to chime in on our thoughts about the expanded College Football Playoff. Jon: Yes. First of all, there was more college football against top teams who never schedule games against each other because most top teams avoid tough games. It also gave hope to those teams beyond just the top four and ESPN was forced to do something besides shill for the SEC even though they tried as hard as they could.
Pinstripe Bowl Report Card: Huskers 20, Boston College Eagles 15
Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images It wasn’t pretty. But Nebraska’s Pinstripe Bowl performance was something far more important: PROGRESS. A winning record for the first time since 2016. A bowl victory for the first time since 2015. Not major accomplishments by themselves, but rather for the futility that can now be relegated to the dumpster of history.
The One Thing the College Football Bracket Got Wrong? The Bracket
Adam Cairns-Imagn Images The expansion of the College Football Playoff to twelve teams was a welcome upgrade to the sport. Yes, SEC types still chirp that Alabama didn’t get in, but hey: try beating (checks notes) Vanderbilt (seriously?) or scoring more than three points at Oklahoma. I mean, you are embarrassing the conference more than Tennessee did on Saturday night.
Report Card: Iowa Hawkeyes 13, Huskers 10
Jeffrey Becker-Imagn Images Quoting the report from the 2023 Husker report card following the Thanksgiving weekend game against the Iowa Hawkeyes. It’s Bill Murray’s football version of “Groundhog Day”; no matter what Nebraska tries, the Huskers find a way to slip up on the banana peel. And in 2023, the banana peel is turnovers. A soul-crushing interception in the closing minute of the game set up the game winning field goal by Iowa’s BACKUP kicker. You’ve got to be (bleeping) me.
Week 14 Predictions: Huskers vs. Hawkeyes
Photo by Keith Gillett/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images Mike: For a rivalry week, there’s a lot of snoozers on Saturday’s Big Ten schedule. In fact, I’d argue that Friday’s two games will be better than most of Saturday’s. Jill: I’ll be out in Colorado proudly wearing my Husker shirts wherever we go. If you don’t hear from me by early next week, tell Jon to send a search party. Land of Lincoln Game at Wrigley Field Illinois (-7.5) vs. Northwestern Jill: I see what you mean Mike.
Nebraska WR Malachi Coleman Enters Transfer Portal
Matt Rhule and Malachi Coleman announced that Coleman is leaving the Husker football program to enter the transfer portal. Malachi’s statement on Instagram: HUSKER NATION I want to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who has been a part of this journey. To my coaches, I cannot thank you enough for the guidance, wisdom, and opportunity to grow both as a football player and as a person. The lessons I’ve learned here will shape me for the rest of my life.
Report Card: Huskers 44, Wisconsin Badgers 25
Photo by Nathanial George/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images Nebraska is bowl eligible. The most ignominious streak of football incompetence is FINALLY over. After nine straight losses following a fifth win in a season, Nebraska finally found a way to get that sixth win of a season. And frankly, the game wasn’t really much in doubt past the first quarter. Nebraska only won four games in 2017, 2018 and 2022. Three in 2020 and 2021. They lost to Iowa in 2019 after blowing out Maryland the week before.
Report Card: Southern Cal Trojans 28, Huskers 20
Photo by Sean M. Haffey/Getty Images The frustration continues. Nebraska dropped yet another one score game that the Huskers could have won. Maybe even would have won, if the referees would have flagged Trojan cornerback DeCarlos Nicholson for a blatant hold on the game’s final play. Should have won? Wellll, that’s probably a stretch. Southern Cal outgained the Huskers 441-310 and pretty much seemed to be the better team Saturday, at least from my perspective.
Report Card: UCLA Bruins 27, Huskers 20
Dylan Widger-Imagn Images Hello darkness, my old friend I’ve come to talk with you again Paul Simon’s lyrics kept running through my mind during yet another long, painful walk out of Memorial Stadium. (Probably set in my mind by Dave Swerski’s parody following the Chicago Bears’ Hail Mary loss last week.) Yet another uninspired loss by the Huskers that makes you challenge when... or even if ... Nebraska is ever going to be relevant in football again.

Report Card: Ohio State Buckeyes 21, Huskers 17
Photo by Jason Mowry/Getty Images Since about 2:30 pm last Saturday, I think every Husker fan dreaded what might happen in Columbus this weekend. So much so that if asked, most Husker fans would have said this week that a four point lost to the Buckeyes sounded just fine to them. I dare say that no Husker fans were saying that during the fourth quarter...especially when the Huskers had a 17-14 lead.
Huskers vs. Indiana 2024 Fiasco

HUSKERS RECAP - Now the REAL PAIN Begins?: INDIANA 56 NEBRASKA 7 HUSKERS vs INDIANA: Pre-Game Vibes Nothing to stress about today, nope, nope. Hopefully, this is Part 1 of 1 in the 2024 edition of The Pursuit of Win #6.
Report Card: Huskers 7, Indiana Hoosiers 56
Photo by THIBAULT CAMUS/POOL/AFP via Getty Images I missed Indiana’s opening drive of this game, driving to a family gathering. At the time, I was fully planning to go back and review that opening drive. Three hours later, the need to go back and watch any more of this game pretty much was nullified.
Huskers at Indiana Hoosiers Gets a Fox Big 11 am Kickoff

Report Card: Huskers 14, Rutgers Scarlet Knights 7
Photo by Steven Branscombe/Getty Images On one of the weirdest, wackiest days of college football in quite some time, we’re reminded that it’s better to win ugly than not win at all. Well, in the case of Nebraska, it wasn’t all ugly. Despite a rather pedestrian offense and multiple special teams debacles, Nebraska’s Blackshirts seized the day and held Rutgers scoreless for the first 56 minutes of the game.
Huskers 28, Purdue Boilermakers 10
Photo by Brian Spurlock/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images In the early going this season, Nebraska has started relatively fast in the first half and seemed to coast in the second half of games. But this week, it was just the opposite: for the first 40 minutes or so of the game, Nebraska was just plain mediocre, at best. So many squandered opportunities, and special teams was almost criminally inept. Most importantly? Zero points. And that officiating?
Predictions: Huskers vs. Boilermakers
Photo by Zach Bolinger/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images Jarek: This is a good game to hopefully get right back on track, and a good way to ease into the road schedule for Nebraska. Having said that, this game breaks the current 50/50-win ratio, so we better be on the correct side of it after Saturday. Mike: Either we get the wheels back on the road in this game...or our seven year stretch in football purgatory is going to become eight. Jill: The close games are the ones that trip up the Huskers.
Report Card: Illinois Fighting Illini 31, Huskers 24
Photo by Nathanial George/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images I just couldn’t do it. When Fox announced that they were pushing Nebraska’s home game against Illinois to Friday night, I had a dilemma. Which game do I skip? The Husker game or the high school game where my son would be performing at? There really wasn’t any hope of the high school game getting moved; the stadium was already in use on Thursday evening and all day Saturday. I made the choice that was the right one for my family...
Huskers vs. Purdue To Be Televised by Peacock
Photo by Steven Branscombe/Getty Images The Big Ten has announced that Nebraska’s game at Purdue on Saturday, Sept. 28 will be televised by Peacock at 11 am central time (12 pm eastern).
Predictions: Huskers vs. Illini
Photo by Steven Branscombe/Getty Images Mike: I’m really grumpy over this week’s game. Other than the COVID season, I haven’t missed a home game since 1998 until this week. Friday night is for high school football, and that’s where I’ll be. I’ll watch the game on the correct day for college football: Saturday. Jarek: I'm more disappointed that Nebraska's 400th consecutive sellout is on a Friday night. Seriously?! The B1G Conference can go screw itself for this one.

Report Card: Huskers 34, Northern Iowa 3
Photo by Steven Branscombe/Getty Images Nebraska is 3-0. Yes, Northern Iowa did have success moving the ball on the Huskers at times on Saturday night, but they only gave up 3 points. Yes, one could argue that Nebraska hasn’t really played anybody, and they probably are right. But still: Nebraska is 3-0. Let’s put that in perspective: Nebraska hasn’t been 3-0 in football since 2016. Nebraska wasn’t a great team that season - especially at the end.

Report Card: Huskers 28, Colorado Golden Buffaloes 10
Photo by Steven Branscombe/Getty Images In front of the loudest, most raucous crows in Memorial Stadium in nearly ten years, Nebraska’s Blackshirt defense exposed the fraud that is Deion Sanders’ Colorado football program “resurgence”. For all the media hype that Colorado gets, the scoreboard ruled last season that Colorado was a four win team in 2023. The Colorado Golden Buffaloes look like a four-win team again in 2024. Maybe. To give Colorado credit, their receiver room looks better this season.
Report Card: Huskers 40, UTEP Miners 7
Dylan Widger-USA TODAY Sports It was finally time for Nebraska to open the season with a game like this...and frankly, it was especially important for Nebraska to open the 2024 season like this. Nebraska opened the previous four seasons with a conference game away from Lincoln; a combination that is especially ill-advised with a true freshman quarterback starting his first game.
Week 1 Predictions: UTEP at Huskers
Dylan Widger-USA TODAY Sports Mike: It’s the most wonderful time of the year... Patrick: Welcome back to the wild and wonderful world of college football! Jill: We made it through the cold, dark off-season and emerged on the other side with our Kool-Aid mixed and ready to drink Bri: We’re back! Jarek: I love the smell of pigskin in the morning! Mike: PLEASE! NO B1G 11 AM FOOTBALL IN LINCOLN! Andy: No 11am games for the first several. Performance will dictate the rest.
Iowa Hawkeyes 2024 Football Preview
Reese Strickland-USA TODAY Sports In recent years, Iowa football has been a dichotomy of two extremes. On one hand the defense under Phil Parker has been one of the nation’s best. It’s elite-level and quite possibly national championship worthy. Then there’s the I*wa *ffense that’s an offense to modern college football. Almost satirically bad last season: 127th in passing offense, 129th in scoring offense and the absolute worst in total offense.
Wisconsin Badgers 2024 Football Preview
Photo by Dan Sanger/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images I have an opinion that’s contrarian to many, if not most Husker fans, I suspect: Wisconsin, not Iowa, is Nebraska’s Big Ten rival. Now, I have to qualify it: Nebraska isn’t Wisconsin’s rival. Specifically, Nebraska hasn’t made a case on the field for being Wisconsin’s rival. The Huskers are 1-11 against Wisconsin since joining the Big Ten. There have been competitive games, to be sure...but Nebraska hasn’t beaten the Badgers since 2012.
Southern Cal Trojans 2024 Football Preview
Photo by Jordon Kelly/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images Nebraska. Southern Cal. Two of college football’s blue bloods, yet seemingly world’s apart. One is a rural state, stereotypically filled with corn fields; the other is the bright lights of Hollywood, surrounded by palm trees. And the two have rarely intersected historically - only five games. And now... the long time Big Eight and Pac-8/10 institutions find themselves as conference rivals ... in the Big Ten.
UCLA Bruins 2024 Football Preview
Photo by Brian Rothmuller/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images Chip Kelly’s move from UCLA head coach to become Ohio State’s offensive coordinator raised a lot of eyebrows, if not downright shocked many. At it’s core, it reinforced one of my beliefs, and that is that the job of a college head coach is more complex and thus much more difficult than any other role at any level of football.

An Ohio State Football Team 2024 Preview
Photo by Steven Branscombe/Getty Images It’s been twelve seasons since Ohio State played in a non-New Year’s Six/BCS bowl game. Since replacing Urban Meyer as head coach, Ryan Day has led Ohio State to the College Football Playoff three times in five seasons. Yet Ryan Day also gets listed on the hot seat rankings as “pressure is mounting” (as CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd says). That’s a product of two factors: first, the high expectations for Ohio State football.
Indiana Hoosiers 2024 Football Preview
Photo by Justin Casterline/Getty Images The Tom Allen “Disrespect” era is over in Bloomington. It had it’s moments, such as going 6-2 in the 2020 COVID-19 season, but when success is dependent on perceived negativity from outside, it’s not sustainable over the long haul...as Allen’s 9-27 record over the last three seasons showed. In is Curt Cignetti, who led James Madison out of the FCS and to a bowl game last season.
Rutgers Scarlet Knights 2024 Football Preview
Photo by Mike Stobe/Getty Images Rutgers has become a trendy pick to emerge in the upper half of the Big Ten in 2024, thanks to a senior-laden experienced team and a friendly schedule. Greg Schiano was a winner his first time at Rutgers, and they’ve shown improvement over the “Buttgers” days that culminated in a 21 conference game losing streak from 2017 through 2019.
Purdue Boilermakers 2024 Football Preview
Photo by Steven Branscombe/Getty Images Two years ago, Purdue won the Big Ten’s west division and played in a New Years’ Day bowl game. But then Jeff Brohm fled the Big Ten to return home to Louisville and the ACC, with former Illinois’ defensive coordinator Ryan Walters taking over in 2023. The Boilermakers went 4-8 with only nine returning starters in 2023, but with 14 returning starters in year two, improvement seems in the cards.
Illinois Fighting Illini 2024 Football Preview
Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty Images Bert Bielema’s teams have long been a thorn in the side of Husker football starting with the 2012 annihilation in the Big Ten championship game. In 2021, Husker mental lapses and poorly timed penalties in the week zero season opener were a sign of a season (and coaching staff) that was simply not-to-be. Last season, Matt Rhule finally found a way to pull off a solid win for the Huskers against a Bert-coached team.

Northern Iowa Panthers 2024 Football Preview
Photo by David K Purdy/Getty Images With Northern Iowa football, there has been one constant for the Panthers in the 21st century: head coach Mark Farley, who is entering his 24th season in charge. He’s the second-winningest active coach in FCS (aka 1-AA) football with a 180-103 record. But after three straight six-win seasons, Farley is shaking things up with four new assistant coaches including new coordinators on both sides of the ball.
Colorado Golden Buffaloes 2024 Football Preview
Photo by Nick Tre. Smith/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images Since both schools left the Big XII conference, Colorado is 3-0 against Nebraska, with all three games being ones where the Huskers had more than their share of opportunities to win those games. In 2018, it was a controversial tackle by Jacob Callier that knocked Adrian Martinez out of the game late. In 2019, the Huskers blew a 17-0 lead in the fourth quarter.
UTEP Miners 2024 Football Preview
Photo by Peter Joneleit/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images A 3-9 season in 2023 is forcing yet another reboot in the UTEP Miners football program. Out is Dana Dimel after losing seasons in five of his six in El Paso. In is Scotty Walden, who was 26-14 at FCS Austin Peay. Prior to Austin Peay, Walden was the interim head coach of Southern Miss in the 2020 COVID-19 season, going 1-3.
Report Card: Iowa Hawkeyes 13, Huskers 10
Photo by Columbia Pictures/Getty Images It happened again. For the third straight week, Nebraska’s final offensive possession of the game ended with an interception. For the fourth straight week, Nebraska lost a one-score game. The Huskers needed just one victory in November to extend the season into December (or maybe even January); they went zero for four. For the second straight home game, the opponent walked off the Huskers with a game-winning field goal.
Report Card: Wisconsin Badgers 24, Huskers 17
Photo by Dan Sanger/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images Sigh. This game brought back bad memories of Nebraska’s 2014 game at Wisconsin, with the Huskers getting off to a fast start before Wisconsin got rolling. The big difference this year was that the 2023 Blackshirts had something in the tank to respond with after the Badgers got something established. Wisconsin simply couldn’t run the Huskers out of Camp Randall. But Nebraska’s offense continues to sputter, especially in the passing game.
Maryland Terrapins Beat Nebraska Huskers 13-10 in Hard-Fought Game
Key points: The Maryland Terrapins defeated the Huskers with a final score of 13-10 in a closely contested game. Nebraska's offense struggled and was responsible for five turnovers. The Huskers' defense put in a strong performance, but ultimately couldn't secure the win. Maryland Terrapins secured a 13-10 victory over the Huskers, with Nebraska's offensive struggles and turnovers contributing to the defeat.
Report Card: Maryland Terrapins 13, Huskers 10
Photo by Steven Branscombe/Getty Images Old habits die hard. And Nebraska’s bad habit of fourth quarter failures came back to haunt Husker fans yet again. And waste a valiant defensive effort for much of the game. Nebraska’s offense didn’t give the Blackshirts much room for error, and defensive perfection isn’t realistic to expect. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a 13-10 football game that only featured FIVE punts. That’s what happens in a game that also featured eight turnovers combined by both teams.
Michigan State Spartans narrowly triumph over Huskers with 20-17 victory
Key points: The Michigan State Spartans defeated the Huskers with a score of 20-17 in an ugly game. The Huskers' defense struggled, special teams had issues, and the offense was particularly ineffective in the passing game. There is room for improvement on the offensive side, particularly by utilizing the I-backs more or considering a different quarterback. The Michigan State Spartans defeated the Nebraska Huskers 20-17 in an ugly game.
