What was your first job as a journalist?
First paying job: Columnist and feature writer for the now-defunct Motor City Sports magazine.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes. My parents bought me an electric typewriter in junior high so I could hone my skills.
How is social media changing news?
It's made being fast far more (and wrongly) important than getting it right. You're also held accountable by readers and peers more strongly.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Clark Kent, conflict of interest aside.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Informing readers is the most important part of the job, giving them stories and information they wouldn't have known otherwise.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
10 fingers, a Lenovo desktop, a Macbook Pro, and an iPhone.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter is treacherous, but it's still the best social network to get information, learn about news.

Novelist Warren Ellis.
Why did you become a journalist?
I wanted to write the kinds of stories I grew up reading, passing experiences and information along to readers.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Yes, though not regularly. Wrote some sports and music reviews.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
It wasn't a long story, but a piece about the guy who rubs mud on the baseballs at Detroit Tigers games.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Have as wide a scope of interests as you can. Read a variety of subjects and formats.
What's your favorite drink?
Dark and Stormy.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Somewhere that doesn't have a screen (kitchen, cafe, restaurant, bookstore).
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
The New York Times.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
We don't travel or go to games nearly as much as people seem to think.
