I started writing for the Nursing Times in the 1990's.

Why did you become a journalist?

Most people don't have access to academic journals so I wanted as many people as possible to have access to research in my area of interest.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Those pieces that capture the impact that social determinants have on individual decisions.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

None I'm more likely to learn from them.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

I've made some ill judged pitches.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

Addiction is a choice rather than a response to trauma or a way of coping with adversity.
