Liquid immersion cooling, autonomous electric airplanes, and biofertilizers derived from insects fed on agriwaste: Recent Deals worth looking at Entosystem (2018) produces animal feed and biofertilizers from insects fed on agri-food waste streams. Entosystem currently has the capacity to divert and transform 90,000 tonnes of organic material from landfill through its current production facility in Drummondville, Canada.
Residential Heat Pumps to Decarbonize CO2 Emissions
Residential heating and cooling accounts for approximately 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions while traditional gas heating systems also emit hazardous sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides into homes, and contribute to respiratory health issues, smog, and acid rain. By 2050, 2.6 billion people globally will live in regions requiring heating and cooling with 47% of the world relying on natural gas for heating. Expediting the transition from fossil fuels is key to limiting emissions.

3D printing for automotive manufacturing; copper free motors; and not one, but two marketplaces for recyclable materials– Recent deals worth looking at: Motatos (2013) is a provider of online marketplaces for surplus and expiring food products. It claims to have recirculated over 60,000 tonnes of food and consumer products across its five European markets since launching in 2014. It reported €80 million revenue for 2022. Motato raised $43M in Growth Equity funding on November 23rd.
Q3 2023 Quarterly Investment Insights
Much has been made of the challenging macroeconomic environment facing cleantech over this past year – high interest rates are slowing or even choking off projects downstream, while innovation at the earlier stages must find ways to grow with access to fewer venture dollars than in previous years. However, beneath the surface, we are observing shifts in the dynamics of cleantech innovation that offer cause for optimism.
Cracking Ammonia: Dissociation and Fuel Innovation
Ammonia is often touted as the fuel of the future. It is gaseous at room temperature but can be liquefied under low pressure enabling its storage, while production requires hydrogen and nitrogen, unlike methanol which requires carbon. There is already 200 million tons per year of ammonia production which enables its wide distribution. However, direct use of ammonia comes with challenges.

Will Lithium-Sulfur Disrupt the Energy Storage Market?
Materials innovator, Lyten, has announced a $200M Series B fund raise led by Prime Mover Labs (PML). The funding will support production of lithium-sulfur batteries and enable the development of composites and other applications using Lyten’s 3D Graphene™. This funding signals a potential shift towards lithium-sulfur battery chemistries, which could provide performance improvements and address challenges associated with incumbent technologies.
Marine Energy Systems: The Potential to Produce 2x the World’s Electricity Demand but Marred by a Sea of Challenges
Marine energy is often thought of as an untapped resource when it comes to renewable energy generation. Reports by IRENA suggest that tidal energy has the potential to generate 1,200TWh of energy. Harnessing the motion from waves can produce 29,500TWh energy and Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) can produce 44,000TWh of energy.

Green Steel: Innovations Can Enable Cost-Effective Deployment at Scale
Most of the steel produced today (around 70%) is made using the blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) production route where iron ore is melted in a blast furnace (BF) and then further processed in a basic oxygen furnace (BOF) to remove impurities and add carbon. The process emits around 2 tonnes of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) per tonne of steel produced. Producers have already adopted steel production technologies which enable a reduction in emissions.
