Ian Sayers Blog: Learning the right lessons from Woodford
Ian Sayers, Chief Executive of the AIC, argues that ‘reliable redemption’ is the only way to address the fundamental problems of holding illiquid assets in open-ended funds and to prevent systemic risks. With the announcement that Woodford Equity Income Fund will be liquidated, I am sure everyone hopes that investors will get as much of their money back as soon as practicable. However, investors might also expect that measures were in hand to prevent these types of problem from happening again.
How do LPs perform in core competencies?
Investment There is no shortage of commentary about the value created by general partners of private equity funds. However, much less consideration is given to the value added by limited partners (LPs). And yet such is the complexity of managing a portfolio of private equity funds, and such is the range of sophistication in how LPs approach this challenge, that the LP value creation dynamic ought to be a major consideration.

One bad experience is all it takes
Would you switch to a competitor after just one bad experience with a brand you previously loved? Research shows that over three-quarters of consumers admit they would. However, consumers also revealed their brand loyalty doesn’t falter, with 52% stating that once they’re loyal to a brand, they’re loyal for life. So – which one is it? How ‘bad’ does the experience have to be for the consumer to make the switch, and what does loyalty really mean to today’s modern consumer?

Investment What do Venture Capital Trusts (VCTs), gorillas and basketballs have in common? Until recently I wouldn’t have been able to tell you either. But if you go onto YouTube and search The Invisible Gorilla Experiment, you’ll find the answer. Over 45 seconds or so, the video asks you to count the number of times a group of people pass a basketball. How many do you count? Around 14 or 15? You’re then asked how many gorillas you saw. Well, none.

Ian Sayers Blog: KIDS, eh? Who’d have ‘em?
At Christmas, we should not need reminding that the best of intentions can sometimes turn out very differently to what we expect. Sending cards, buying presents, visiting family and friends for food or drink – all seem harmless enough at the beginning of December. But unless you are meticulous in your planning, I expect many of us reach the end of the holidays wondering how everything suddenly got out of control.
Could the Patient Capital Review change the conversation around risk? - Fund Strategy
The Patient Capital Review is the Government’s attempt to encourage more investment into long-term illiquid assets such as venture capital, private equity and infrastructure projects by private and institutional investors. In a more logical world, this would seem like an easy match to make. After all, research has shown time and again that illiquid assets tend to outperform liquid asset classes over the long-term.
