DFIs are unlocking liquidity and mobilising private capital
We are increasingly seeing development finance institutions (DFIs) using secondary transactions – sale of existing fund interests – to address these situations in different ways. Whilst the mobilisation of private capital in developing market funds sometimes relies on blended finance arrangements, including first-loss positions, secondary transactions are proving to be a useful supplementary approach to encouraging more private investment.
Phantom Metaphor Syndrome: A Catalogue of Enactments • Slab Mag
In den Leonorengärten is a newly built residential neighbourhood in Lankwitz, a locality in south-west Berlin. It seems perfectly situated; between a nursing home and a leisure center. In August of 2016 I drifted by, on my way down to a stretch of the Berlin Wall Trail which I’d not personally covered during research on Slab Magazine’s 2010 investigation The New Death Strip. It was a gorgeous day, and trails need trailing.

27 March 2017 Building Words By Ian Warner Archive ∕ Blurbanism ∕ Event ∕ Lecture ∕ Memory ∕ Personal History ∕ Shopping Malls ∕ Video Video of the talk I gave at 2016’s Typo conference, held at the HKW in Berlin, has finally been released from password-protected seclusion.
Running in the Cloud Chamber
I’ve taken up running, spurred on by my marathon-grade brother-in-law who leaves mysterious comb-shaped GPS trails across Leeds, visible in a training app he recommended. Tethered by elaborate descriptions of exertion, our phones have become tracking devices for sweaty meanders mapped onto distant terrains. I show the app to my colleague, who remarks that my own canal-side routes in Berlin seem a little cramped in comparison.

Spandex temple knights Joe was in town, and we went walking. Joe is my doppelgänger of sorts, which suggests the duplicate, but also motion. It might be better to describe him as my stunt-double, living a life approximate to how my own might have played-out had I stayed in the UK. Joe comes from the Black Forest, and was completing his MA in communication design in the UK, just as I was completing my BA in the same discipline. He settled in London. I emigrated to Berlin.
Ring Around the Ringbahn: A Postscript • Slab Mag
I’m suffering from time-slippage. It’s probably just the effects of middle-age compounded by the ongoing pandemic, which has screwed up so many people’s sense of the passage of time. In addition to this, one year ago I left Berlin to temporarily live and work in Doha, Qatar, so my internal temporal reference point is now pegged firmly to the beginning of 2021, and my sense of place is as messed-up as can be.
Playful Noticing: Exploring an Unremembered Diagonal • Slab Mag
I’ve lived in the same neighbourhood of Berlin for close to twenty years; enough time for the steady ebb and flow of daily routine to deposit a plaque on the senses, dulling them to the superabundance of detail and idiosyncrasy so characteristic of the place I call home. Over-familiarity with a place can sometimes feel like its opposite: as though the constantly expanding index of things newly noticed throws a veil over the enduring features to which one is well accustomed.
Going mapless for a change
In the few short years in which I’ve owned a smartphone, mapping apps have already meddled with the way I deal with unfamiliar cities, turning me into a twitching screen-neurotic at every intersection. “Move fast and break things” indeed: like my natural sense of direction, for example. Graçias, Silicon Valley! But disruption also brings opportunities to inspect the mess left behind. First though, a little resistence. I grab a printed map for tourists from a glass info-pod on Placo del Prado.
Just whack it up • Slab Mag
“Just whack it up. Just get it out there; like back in the day.” I’m paraphrasing Mr Miller, esteemed Slab raconteur of yore, when I regaled him with an outraged account of fresh architectural horrors discovered last season on an otherwise very pleasant walk through the southern districts with a colleague. Recounting the episode felt like an evocation.
Meltwater Peregrinations II • Slab Mag
In order to continue with this narrative arc, I need to set the context for what follows, and return briefly to November 2017, one month after I published Part I of Meltwater Peregrinations. In that month the first edition of Way Too Concrete – Footnotes on the Spatial took place, an event organised by myself, Sandra Bartoli, and Fiona Shipwright.
What impact investors can learn from development finance institutions
Impact investors – investors that seek positive environment or social outcomes through their investments as well as financial returns – can learn from multilateral development banks and other development finance institutions (DFIs) from the way they hold investment fund managers to sustainable investment objectives and strategies.
Use of blended finance in fund structures
Blended finance is increasingly playing an important part in addressing this gap, by catalysing additional funding from investors with a more “commercial” focus (commercial investors). Blended finance can take many forms. It is usually provided by investors who are focused more on development outcomes, such as development finance institutions, multi-lateral development banks, charitable foundations, or philanthropic investors (development investors).
Pinsent Masons advises Regenerate in the launch of first of its kind European regenerative agriculture fund
Regenerate is an independent private markets investment manager focussed on impact and climate transition. The fund will invest directly in agricultural businesses growing and supplying regenerative and climate positive produce in Europe. These businesses are actively transitioning to sustainable or regenerative practices, such as improving soil health, carbon sequestration, biodiversity, water conservation, circular practices, nutrient density and farm emissions.
Ladies with Skylight Windows | Slab Mag
Recently, whilst researching building materials for an upcoming commission, my colleague mentioned something curious: that there was a discrete aesthetic inherent to the visualisation of skylight windows. An extensive, multi-language image-search turned up the goods. I did what any other self-respecting blurbanist does, and made a Tumblr for it. At a guess, 98% of the images featured a female protagonist.
