Christians should welcome Clive Johnston’s appeal against his conviction for preaching the gospel near Coleraine’s Causeway Hospital. His sermon was on John 3:16. He did not mention abortion, display placards, or harass anyone. Yet he was convicted under Northern Ireland’s abortion safe-access-zone legislation. Some Christians, understandably, have reservations. Mr Johnston openly acknowledged that he wanted to test the limits of the law.

Editor's Comment: Last week we published an article by Tim Farron MP asking, 'When does patriotism become idolatry?' Here is a response from Ian Williamson, who leads Medhurst Ministries, a Christian organisation which seeks to equip churches for council estate ministry. I read Tim Farron's recent article on patriotism and idolatry with sadness, although, if I am honest, not much surprise. I agreed with plenty of it. Christ cannot be reduced to a political movement's mascot.

Death is an old nemesis of mine after losing my parents, my siblings, six children, and almost my own life, which a lot of you think is funny, but be in a wheelchair for fifteen years, an I think you would change your mind. Knowing what this is like I would never intentionally defame the dead, their memory, to their legacy.
