Spiking oil prices jolt U.S. bond yields past 5%, threatening to set off a vicious cycle of debt just as the Fed is expected to hike rates Original
The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield briefly topped 5% for the first time since 2023 as spiking oil prices threaten to spill over to debt markets. Yields later pulled back, but Monday’s milestone capped off a surge of more than 100 basis points since just before the Iran war began in late February, when the 10-year rate was below 4%.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s exclusive interview with Fortune’s Alyson Shontell

Stocks are in a late-stage bubble and poised to crash 21% next year, while Treasury yields above 5% will signal a new era of tight money, analysts say
Investors should enjoy the final months of 2026 while they can as the AI-led stock market boom is due to go bust soon, according to analysts. For now, there are still gains to be had. James Reilly, senior markets economist at Capital Economics, reiterated an earlier forecast for the S&P 500 to end this year at 8,250, up 7.7% from Friday's close, then plunge 21% to 6,500 by the end of 2027. "On balance, we think the data look consistent with a late-stage bubble," he wrote in a note on Thursday.

The third rail isn't what it used to be. As the Social Security fund's insolvency nears, more lawmakers are open to tax hikes—even Republicans Original
Congress has put off making tough choices on Social Security for years, but the bill is coming due soon, and it’s looking like taxpayers will pick up the tab. That’s because a small but growing group of lawmakers has signaled openness to shoring up Social Security’s finances by raising more revenue via taxes. The group includes some Republicans, who have traditionally viewed tax hikes as anathema.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and AI whistleblower Jacob Coxon agree: Something terrifying could happen in a matter of months
Jason Ma The narrative around AI suddenly took an existential turn over the past week as leading voices sounded the alarm over humanity's future, and the fear of an imminent calamity has sharpened those warnings. On Saturday, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called on the industry to slow down development , saying that AI has been advancing “drastically faster” since the summer, driven primarily by AI's ability to upgrade itself.

Mortgage lending standards are so tight that homebuyers must have 'pristine' credit histories, study says, as sales head for 31-year low Original
The housing market has been frozen since the COVID-era boom ended, with higher borrowing costs, limited supply, and elevated home prices mostly taking the blame. But stricter lending rules put in place after the housing crash that sparked the Great Financial Crisis are also weighing on prospective homeowners, according to a study last month from the Pew Charitable Trusts.
Trump and Xi Jinping would both win the Nobel Peace Prize if they make a U.S.-China deal on AI development, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says
President Donald Trump has been very vocal about how much he thinks he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. But so far, he has been shut out. Despite launching a war against Iran early this year, however, concerns about AI’s destructive potential could provide an opening for him to win the award. In an exclusive interview with Fortune on Friday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was asked about the AI industry slowing down in the name of safety and if that extends to the U.S.-China competition.

In an exclusive interview with Fortune on Friday, he pointed out that the company has long maintained it’s not in a hurry to rush ahead with an IPO.

Oil prices dive on signs of Hormuz diplomacy while Saudi Arabia is left hanging in fight against an Iranian ally threatening crude's other chokepoint Original
After weeks when Middle East diplomacy seemed dead in the water, a rare meeting between Iran and its Persian Gulf neighbors has renewed hope for a deal that could fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Foreign ministers from the Gulf Cooperation Council—which is comprised of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman—will meet their Iranian counterpart on Monday, sources told the Financial Times. Brent crude oil prices tumbled 2.9% to $104.52 a barrel on Friday.

China’s export shock is pushing the global economy to a breaking point, and the U.S. may have to clean up the mess, former trade official says

But the Chinese growth model is running out of road, setting the stage for another global economic crisis, according to Michael Froman, a former U.S. Trade Representative and current president of the Council on Foreign Relations.

These industries will lead hiring in the next decade, with just one sector accounting for more than a third of all new jobs
Jason Ma The U.S. labor market is bracing for a decade of slower overall growth, but a handful of industries and occupations are set to expand at a breakneck pace, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. From 2025 to 2035, total employment will edge up by 5.9 million jobs to 176.2 million, representing growth of just 3.5%—a fraction of the 10.9% pace during the prior decade, BLS said in a report late last month.

'Chuck it in the fire.' A leading candidate in France's presidential race has a simple solution to its massive national debt: just cancel it Original
Unlike in the U.S., candidates in France’s election have actually focused on how to tackle the national debt, as a new president is due to take charge of the eurozone’s second largest economy next year. Last month, a French presidential debate was dominated by the country’s rising public debt. By contrast, midterm election races in the U.S. are about data centers, higher gas prices, and the Iran war, even as America’s own mountain of debt hits $40 trillion.

President Donald Trump has downplayed his war on Iran as “small potatoes,” but those potatoes are getting bigger as both sides are escalating beyond their stalemate in the Strait of Hormuz. For months, Iran’s military has failed to completely close off the narrow waterway, as U.S. forces shepherd more oil tankers through, eroding Tehran’s geopolitical leverage.
