Bringing Up Mother
I was not dressed correctly when motherhood interviewed me. I wore flat shoes and a passport. My knees were pearl handles, my mind, on and off like static. But I got the job. I understood childhood, but in an unbroken nostalgic way. Learning on the job, pregnant at graduation. I wanted nothing more than to climb inside myself and read a prayer in your ear before the earth’s air reached you like music. Sheltered, you grabbed my heart without mastery.
Remembering Grenfell: five years on and still no justice
Content warning: this article contains mention of death. Five years ago, smoke pumped thick into the night sky as the residents of Grenfell Tower attempted to escape a horrific blaze that eventually defeated them. The fire on the 14 June 2017 claimed the lives of 72 people, while dozens were injured that night. Survivors and former residents have been left traumatised, constantly reminded of the government’s neglect. Never has there been such a stark reminder of death in London.
The fragility of motherhood doesn't go away—but it makes you stronger
Sylvia Plath once wrote a poem called 'Morning Song,' describing the birth of her first child. It echoes many emotions of new motherhood: shock, tiredness and an all-encompassing fear that so many of us experience. Plath described motherhood as slow and delicate, her child as a permanent part of nature, like the sun or the stars. It resonated with me after giving birth to my first child.
The Truth Behind Why The Riverdale Spinoff Katy Keene Was Cancelled
The CW’s Riverdale spinoff and musical fiction show Katy Keene has been cancelled after just one season. Starring Lucy Hale (Pretty Little Liars), Keene’s character is based off of an Archie Comics character of the same name, and follows the journey of four twenty-somethings, all artists, who are struggling to make it in the Big Apple. Katy is an aspiring fashion designer and is joined by new roommate Josie McCoy, reappearing as the same character she played in teen smash hit show, Riverdale.
“From Here but Also… From There Too. ”: The Conundrum of the Self in Writing
The best books have always been invoked from varied life experience and a writer’s unique frame of mind. Writers born in the west, often fittingly discuss and question the self and what it means to them in their hybrid world made up of identity, in their sphere of a real, possibly at times even imagined diaspora. Many of the best, most eclectic tales, come from first-hand reports on difference, belonging, unbalance, confusion, and crisis of the self.

The Good Old Days - Can a 90’s Generation Ever Be Duplicated?
By Idman Omar My strongest memories of childhood derive from the simplicity of the times. It was idyllic, nostalgic even. It felt like we lived in low jeopardy days in almost every sense. Pre 9/11, I still got a feeling, even though I was a child, that Muslims felt more comfortable to practice their religion publicly without the illumination of our every move unlike in the media today. The identity of a Muslim in the U.K back then, also felt like one of less dangerous judgments and ties.
Saint Raphael's
I gain entry to St Raphael’s estate, the way ice passes over sore skin. I’m jumpy, and walk past Polish men sitting comfortably on a low brick wall, drinking heavily in the afternoon. There are cuts on their fingers; paint on their clothes. They wear luminous Hi Vis work jackets, and sit propped like puppets on a bench, watching me intensely as I walk by. The field leading from the train station binds the estate, and shows me the way like an older sibling.
Broken promises: how London estates mistrust since Grenfell
The best case scenario at Grenfell a year ago would have been, of course, that it didn’t happen. The worst case – well, there is no scenario. It’s a reality that 71 people (according to the official count) died in their homes for simply assuming their homes were safe. It’s just not enough for residents to have died due to illegal combustible cladding either, it seems.
