By July and August, they will be in the adult form and numerous. After eggs hatch, the nymphs go through five to six forms (instars) and will appear to change slightly in form. During the early instars, they are quite social and you will see them grouped together. The adults become more solitary.

Florida: Cotton Seed Coat Fragments - A Serious Issue for Panhandle Farmers in 2020
Defoliated cotton field ready for picking. Photo: Lance Clemmons, GW Farms. Seed coat fragments (SCFs) have been a long-term issue for cotton. Outbreaks of SCFs occur sporadically every 3 to 5 years in a region of the U.S. In 2020 the region included Alabama, Georgia and Florida with the biggest outbreak of SCFs calls in the last 20 years. And it is no coincidence that this was also one of the worst years for tropical storms in this region.

Nutrient runoff in corn field. Recently I shared an article, Senate Bill 712: Nutrient Record-Keeping Requirements for Producers Enrolled in the BMP Program, that discussed key elements of the Senate Bill 712 “The Clean Waterways Act” and how the bill affects agricultural producers. I wanted to provide additional information on the nutrient record keeping and record reporting requirements of the bill.
Dispelling Cattle Mineral Supplementation Myths
Oklahoma State University Extension There are a number of myths, hearsay, and misinformation that surround mineral supplementation for the beef cow herd. In the following I’ve listed ten of my favorites and the ones I hear the most along with an explanation. 1. Cows know what minerals they need. Cows, like people, have no inherent knowledge of their nutritional needs, particularly when it comes to minerals. Cows will seek salt, but that does not translate to an understanding of mineral requirements.

Understanding Stocking Rate vs. Stocking Density
We have reached the time of year when most our pastures have settled into adequate production enabling us to graze cattle on a more frequent basis. Recently, while discussing pasture/grazing conditions with producers, I’ve noticed three terms being used interchangeably – stocking rate, carrying capacity and stocking density. These terms are very similar in name but very different in meaning.
Florida Peanuts: Recognizing and Managing Sting Nematode
Patches of stunted, dead, and chlorotic (yellow) peanuts due to sting nematode infection. Photo: IFAS Extension In the Southeast, peanut nematodes are often assumed to be peanut root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne arenaria and Meloidogyne javanica) because they are widespread, highly-damaging, and their symptoms are relatively distinct. However, Florida peanut growers deal with other nematodes as well—namely sting nematode.
Florida Pecans: Webworms - First Sign of Fall
Bare limb tips and clusters of webbing in pecan trees are often the first sign that fall is right around the corner. This webbing is caused by clusters of the larvae of the Fall Webworm (Hyphantria cunea (Drury)) which is often also called Pecan Webworm. “Fall Webworm” is a bit of a misnomer in our region since they are able to strike in spring and summer thanks to our long growing season. They are most noticeable in the fall thanks to cumulative effects of earlier feeding.
