Disclose, divest, disrupt
Organized and individual protests in relation to the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict have left an impact on campus over the past two weeks, with calls for the disclosure and divestment of CWU’s alleged ties to Israel, direct accusations on the Board of Trustees and administrative members including President Jim Wohlpart and condemnation of the alleged genocide occurring in Palestine.
Sound Bite Issue 9
This Week in Music Welcome to this quarter’s final issue of Sound Bite! With summer just around the corner, I’ll be using this issue to highlight some upcoming releases that we won’t be able to cover, and I’ll also give my opinions on a few artists to look out for in the coming months. But before we get into the summer forecast I wanted to touch on a recent release by Vince Staples, who is very quickly becoming a prominent name in the entertainment sphere.
Sound Bite 8
If you’re not paying attention to Chief Keef it’s a problem. Since the early 2010’s he’s been undeniably one of the most influential figures on the modern music scene — and I would go so far as to say all time. Just 28 years old, his most recent venture “Almighty So 2” is one among dozens of projects — and maybe his most evolved. At his core, Keef is an innovator, and “Almighty So 2” takes the sound of Chicago drill that he’s pioneered into a thrilling new lane for the artist.
Central Theatre Ensemble cuts loose as ‘Footloose’ opening fast approaches
One day out from opening curtains, an eager director makes final preparations for the Central Theatre Ensemble’s upcoming show, the culmination of nearly a year’s worth of tireless work from designers, producers, crew, actors, choreographers and composers. “Footloose” hits the stage in McConnell Hall tomorrow, and with it, Dr. Emily Rollie’s musical vision for the iconic 1984 film celebrating its 40th anniversary.
CWU alum brings a fresh perspective to fresh produce
Mountains of fruits and veggies will bring color to 4th Street, live music from buskers will fill the quiet Ellensburg air and our sleepy town will brim with energy starting Saturday, May 4. It’s the long-awaited arrival of market season as flowers bloom in the hills, marking signs of spring. “I think Ellensburg is kind of a unique situation where we have all these farmers growing all these really really cool things,” Alana Jacobs, the Ellensburg Farmers Market’s brand new market manager, said.
Search for Vice President of Equity and Belonging halts as tensions rise against administration
The months-long search for a Vice President of Equity and Belonging and Senior Diversity Officer has been deemed a failure by President Jim Wohlpart and is set to be re-launched in the fall, according to an email sent out to CWU staff and students on the morning of April 30. Interim Vice President Dr. Lucinda Carnell is set to return to her position as a member of the biological sciences faculty after the end of the year.
Sound Bite #3
This Week in Music Welcome to this week’s issue of Sound Bite! The biggest news of the week is the release of Taylor Swift’s latest album “THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT: THE ANTHOLOGY.” The release has been long awaited by fans, which makes the extra 15 songs included on the album an even bigger surprise. At this point, it’s hard to gather a general consensus on the album as reactions seem to be all over the place. Regardless, the album is on track to be the largest release of the year.
University Relations deems ethical dilemma involving president “not news”
The Observer received an email from David Leder, associate director of Strategic Communications and University Relations, on behalf of University Relations and the President’s Office, on Feb. 21 just after 8 a.m. The email outlined a series of issues they had with our initial Feb.
Here’s why the interview with CWU’s President triggered an ethical dilemma
Last week, The Observer’s cover story discussed an ethical dilemma in which CWU President Jim Wohlpart directly offered an internship to The Observer’s Editor-in-chief (EIC) Isaac Hinson, according to Hinson’s account of the event. An internship is a graduation requirement for a bachelor’s degree in Media & Journalism, which Hinson is working towards.
My autopsy of the Grammy’s
Do people still care about the Grammys? If you’re a member of this dwindling minority, enjoy some thoughts on this year’s award show from someone whose music taste sadly isn’t Grammy-nominated. Let’s focus first on some of the bigger categories that actually matter to viewers. To address the (or one of) elephant(s) in the room, Lana Del Rey was utterly robbed of an Album of the Year award.
Sincerely, a collector
For Audrey McConnell, they’re an art form: creative expression tied to machines that have gone largely extinct for the better part of a century. It’s a self-proclaimed engineer and mechanic, who’s made a hobby—and a business—out of collecting and restoring vintage typewriters. McConnell attributes the beginnings of its typewriter fixation to its late grandfather and his typewriter; a 1928 Underwood Model 5 it understandably labels the pride and joy of its collection.
The facts: How six SLICE employees were fired and rehired within two weeks
Hours after returning to the office on Jan.
My top albums of 2023 (and why you should listen)
100 gecs – “10,000 gecs” My number-one album of the year. Hyperpop pioneers 100 gecs reinvent themselves with their second album, taking the sound to new places with an endlessly fun series of tracks. Laura Les and Dylan Brady represent the internet age, and they wear this label proudly with wild lyrics (including a song all about a popular frog at a party) backed up by their signature electronic production. This is a 2023 must listen.
Local Ellensburg band divulges their backstory and inspirations
Matching influences, lofty goals, lifesaving kinship and an intimate Ellensburg music community make House of Ash small-town psych-rock superstars. Guitarists Joe Ewald and Seth McGuire, lead vocalist John Baldwin and drummer Nate Lawrence comprise the band, a project first created in 2021. Ewald explained his initial inspiration to start making music. “I got broken up with by a girl,” Ewald said. “I was bummed out.
DJ Freezie draws a crowd at downtown rave
The music roared, the crowd surged and the lights shone as Jordan Teddy, better known as DJ Freezie, put on a show in downtown Ellensburg on Oct. 13. The local DJ lit up Old Skool’s tiny venue with what he described as “maybe the first rave in [the] town’s history.” Teddy discussed his upcoming show just hours before doors opened, going over some final details and describing his thoughts. “It’s my first concert,” Teddy said.
National food bank and CWU Wildcat Pantry feed 250 Ellensburg families and students
In a collaboration between the CWU Wildcat Pantry and Tri-Cities-based food bank Second Harvest, around 250 students and families were provided free produce, snacks and household goods at the Second Harvest Mobile Food Pantry, according to pantry organizer Brady Smith. “Our goal this year is to have one each quarter,” said Smith, hoping for a perennial partnership with Second Harvest.
