The Best Books I Read in the Final Months of 2024
Dec 6 Failed to save article Please try again Look, this year had its many ups and downs. But one thing that’s kept me sane is reading nearly every night instead of — or, when I did slip up, in addition to — scrolling on my phone. I also attended a friend’s monthly book club, which provided an opportunity to connect with other 20-somethings in San Francisco who have similar interests (and see their apartments, which is a nice bonus for my Architectural Digest-loving heart).

Honey | Bookreporter.com
In HONEY, debut novelist Isabel Banta casts a nostalgic but critical eye on the glossy era of Y2K pop music, when Britney Spears, NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys ruled the Billboard charts and the hearts of teen girls. Banta follows a singer named Amber Young from her days as a nervous preteen competing on “Star Search” to a chart-topping idol on “TRL.” Amber’s road to stardom begins in suburban New Jersey, where she lives in a dingy apartment with her single, alcoholic mother and older brother.

Honey
Isabel Banta’s, Honey, is a beautifully written debut novel that follows Amber Young, a rising pop-star in the 90s’, and the fluctuations of being a woman in the spotlight, especially during this period of time. I knew within the first few pages of this novel that Honey would be a book that enthrals me, and it would have me either devouring the pages or taking my time to appreciate the beauty and magic behind every sentence.

Whether you like Greek mythology, independent women, adventure (or all these things!), Circe is for you. Over a span of thousands of years, it follows Circe, the sorceress best known for turning men into pigs during Homer’s Odyssey. Of course, there’s much more to the story. Apps You Should Download This Spring
Like most millennials, I spend a majority of my time with my phone by my side. Our phones have become our lifelines. My email, texts, playlists, and calendar are all accessible with a swipe of my finger, and I rely on these apps to navigate my hectic schedule as well as for entertainment. However, I’ve been realizing how I may have become a little too reliant on my phone. I was using mindless apps like Subway Surfer instead of paying attention to my surroundings.
Why Young Adult Novels Are More Powerful Than We Think
I grew up with my nose in a book. Though my obsession with reading probably started with Harry Potter, I soon began to pick up everything I could lay my hands on. I read the Twilight Saga and The Hunger Games early on, though in retrospect I look back on these protagonists and doubt the image they projected to my tween-self. Bella Swan has been criticized by many for being too docile and anti-feminist.
The Politics of Millennial Pink
Millennial pink is everywhere nowadays. It’s the color equivalent of avocado toast and iPhones—it practically screams this generation. The trendiness of millennial pink probably began with the rose gold phenomenon—remember that? —but now it’s even more popular than its metallic counterpart since it emerged in 2016. It’s also androgynous and hip rather than being uber feminine. The bags, the hats, and the Adidas sweatshirts could be worn by any gender and still radiate “cool”.
The Female Directors Who Are Changing the Game of the Entertainment Industry
The entertainment industry is considered to be dominated by men, but behind the scenes women have been climbing the ranks to become executives, producers, and directors. There’s a good chance that the blockbuster you saw last summer (Wonder Woman!) was directed by a woman.
The Female Artists You Should Be Listening to This Fall
From the Intro of Kehlani’s album “SweetSexySavage”, she announces herself as a powerful female artists with a message. She says, “I’m afraid you’re under the impression I was made to please you. I was under the impression you understood me better. The truth is I’m a superwoman, and some days I’m an angry woman, and some days I’m a crazy woman.” I’ Her R&B vibe is electric, moody, and bubbly all at once. Her lyrics are savage. This is an album you won’t want to miss.

The Female-Centric TV Shows You Should Be Watching
There are plenty of TV shows and movies nowadays that portray kick-ass women who have no time for men or the patriarchy. From Katniss Everdeen to Daenerys Targarean, these women have ushered in the golden age of television and a time in which female characters have become just as complex as their male counterparts. There are shows currently on air that demonstrate this complexity in new and exciting ways that may not be on your radar screen—here is what you should be watching.
Perspectives on Sorority Rush as a Second Year
There are many reasons girls rush as second year students-- maybe they missed rush freshman year or didn't want to, are transfer students, or found that they wanted to meet more people or join their friends' sorority. It may be daunting to join a sorority as an upperclassman, but I have found that there are benefits to giving rush a second chance. As a freshman in college, it is difficult to know what you want out of a sorority as well as out of your friends.
Why Every Other Holiday Is Better Than Valentine’s Day
Now that Valentine’s Day is over, us single ladies can finally breath easy. No more worrying about the fact that there is no one to buy us chocolate and flowers. No more being jealous of hand-holding couples. We won’t have to worry about the most dreaded holiday (AKA Single Awareness Day) for another year. It is clear that hardly anyone (except loved-up couples) looks forward to Valentine’s Day. Every other holiday just has so much more to offer.

Things to Look Forward to After Finals
It may be crunch time now, but the holidays are right around the corner. Finals season may the worst time of the year, but luckily it leads right into the best time of year. When you get home from college, the pressure is off, and you can finally spend time with friends and family for an extended period of time (because as we know, the three days of Thanksgiving break are nothing). Here are some things to look forward to (and hopefully to get you through finals).
Dear College Women
Most of us felt the ache as we woke up for class on November 9, the slow realization that the election hadn’t turned out the way we planned. The election had dangled the prospect of the first woman president in front of us—and suddenly, we were no longer tantalizingly close to shattering the glass ceiling. As Trump’s camp declared victory, it seemed as if the country was moving backwards once again.
The Female Driven Albums You Should Be Listening To
Though you may have listened to Lemonade or ANTI on repeat last year, Beyoncé and Rihanna aren’t the only female artists making bold music. Newcomers such as Banks and Halsey are making deep, lyrically-driven alternative music and returning faces such as Lady Gaga and Solange are revamping their image. Here are the albums you should be listening to at the moment. This follow-up to 2015’s Goddess is full of intelligent lyrics and captivating techno-beats.
