Therapeutic terminology and self-diagnosis are becoming too commonplace
Say you have a conflict with a friend. You tell two people about what happened: a different friend and your therapist. One tells you that the person you’re in a fight with was gaslighting and manipulating you and that they suspect the person may be a narcissist. The other tells you that the person seems immature and quick to get defensive. Guess which one is the therapist?
The failures of girlhood
Girlhood is no longer confined to the age range before adolescence. It is no longer relegated to existing only in our memories of playing with our mom’s makeup, performing living room dance routines to the newest Meghan Trainor song and longingly eyeing a bedazzled crop top from Justice — with the built-in tank top underneath, of course.
Inconsistent Enforcement of Substance Abuse Policy Leaves Students Confused
Throughout high schools across the country, substance abuse on campus and at school events is a pressing concern. While M-A has seen a stark drop in campus drug use rates since the ‘90s, 2023-2024 has seen an uptick in substance use. Despite claims of administration increasing punishments, unstandardized punishments are sending the message that substance abuse is met with leniency, creating a culture of drug abuse at school.
The Dying Tradition of Senior Pranks
Senior pranks have been a tradition for decades. Before send-off at graduation, seniors pull one final stunt. In theory, these pranks are harmless fun—wallpapering classroom walls with sticky notes, hiring mariachis to follow around the principal, or turning desks and chairs upside down before class. M-A’s most memorable pranks include the robocalling scam in 2009 when a group of seniors used an auto-dialing system to call 1,700 M-A students’ homes.
"It Was a Proper Rave"—FISHER Concert Plagued with Injuries - M-A Chronicle
photos taken by Anna Gady and Anya Perazich The FISHER concerts on March 27th and 28th brought chaos to Cow Palace and resulted in several injuries. Last weekend, Australian tech-house producer FISHER played two sold-out shows at Cow Palace in Daly City. While the venue has a legacy of hosting rock legends like the Smashing Pumpkins, Metallica, Nirvana, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, FISHER was the first electronic artist to sell out two shows.
Dissenting Opinion: High School Relationships are Worth It
Now that M-A Chronicle Editor-in-Chief Dylan Lanier’s article is leading the public conversation about the merit of high school relationships, I figured somebody ought to challenge his views. There is nobody I have talked to about love and relationships more than Dylan Lanier. Dylan and I gossip about our recent first dates and how they went wrong—for me, a guy attempting to woo me by freestyle rapping, and for him, a very strange first kiss involving tomato soup.
Opinion: College Counseling at M-A vs. Private Schools
M-A is fortunate enough to have a team devoted to college and career advising. According to Mai Lien Nguyen and Joshua Barraza, M-A’s college and career advisors, the College and Career Center (CCC) helps students form college lists, understand application strategies, and formulate college essays by providing students with feedback on drafts.
Satire: I Just Wanted A Rug
I wake up in the morning with an overwhelming desire. Oh, how I need a rug! My warm, tender toes strike the brutally cold floor, craving the luxury of a comforting plush rug beneath my feet. Preferably, a Persian one. Recognizing the social injustice my toes are victim to, I venture down to Santa Cruz Ave, A.K.A. ‘The Hub’ for rug stores. Overwhelmed by the myriad of rug stores, I break down in tears of joy. How lucky I am to live so close to the Mecca of rug stores.
Bear Bites: Los Carnalitos
Tucked away on a side street off El Camino in Redwood City, the Los Carnalitos food truck provides customers with delicious, authentic Mexican food. Their flavors are reminiscent of traditional cuisine from Mexico City, coining their name from the popular saying “Los Carnalitos,” meaning, “more than a friend, like a brother.” Founders Luis and Alfredo Santos hail from Mexico and created Los Carnalitos in 2015.
