This book follows two main characters: Ifemelu and Obinze—are childhood sweethearts in Nigeria who are separated when Ifemelu comes to America for college. The story follows their adventures apart and together and in the meantime tells a rich, at times sad, at times funny, always poignant story about love, race, immigration, politics, friendship, and culture. Adichie paints very real people with complex and interesting psychologies—it’s difficult to not fall in love with everyone in this book.
